RAM MOUNTAIN STATES CIRCUIT FINALS RODEO

about riding saddle bronc horses until he enrolled at Clarendon (Texas) College in the fall of 2019, but his start in the sport was spurred from riding colts as a summer job. “It really started out when I was working for a horse trainer one summer and I was the colt jockey,” saidWells. “I kept getting on these colts and I really liked the adrenaline rush and liked the wildness of it. So, I went and bought a bronc saddle and went to a school where it all started for me.” Now, he’s the Mountain States Circuit Finals average champion and the year-end winner. He wrapped up the event in Loveland, Colo., Oct. 23 with 245 points on three head. He credits his win to taking things one horse at a time. “I was just lucky enough to draw some good horses and just kept everything simple in my approach to the weekend,” Wells said. “I didn’t think about things in the long run, I just thought about one horse at a time. I was trying to get good spur outs and stay aggressive. I had hoped it would all work itself out and it sure did for me in Loveland.” This past seasonWells earned $25,944, which was first amongst saddle bronc riders competing on their permits. He admits there was a learning curve at first, but he couldn’t be happier with how the year ended. “I learned a ton this past year as far as riding,” saidWells. “I think where I’ve really improved is in the mental aspect and being better prepared. Then physically I think I was stronger and more fit and have better prepared myself for next year and beyond hopefully. “I was able to stay healthy this summer, which is one of the most important things in this sport. I was lucky enough to get into these rodeos and get some money won. Now my focus is on the 2022 season and getting off to a good start.” So far this season he’s placed in five rounds and won $8,354 in just three weeks of rodeoing. He said he’s excited to kick 2022 off on the right foot and use his past experiences to take his riding to the next level. “This season my hope is to win more rodeos and keep getting better and just having fun,” he said. “I think it’s really important in this sport to keep a positive mindset and to continue having fun throughout the season whether it’s going good or bad.”
