RAM MOUNTAIN STATES CIRCUIT FINALS Permit holder wins nearly $10,000 Tying Time BY MATT NABER P ermit holder Jase Staudt narrowly qualified for the RAMMountain States Circuit Finals Rodeo in team roping and only competed in tie-down roping because one of the top 12 cowboys didn’t enter. But everything came together for the 23-year-old, Colorado cowboy as he won both events and claimed the all- around to take home nearly $10,000.

“The only reason I got into the circuit finals was because Riley Pruitt didn’t enter, so truthfully I shouldn’t have been able to (tie-down) rope there,” Staudt said. “He and I are good friends, and he said, ‘You better enter since I’m not going to go.’” As a tie-down roper, Staudt placed second in the first round in 9.7 seconds, third in the second round in 9.8 seconds and tied for first in the final round in 9.2 seconds to win the average by a 2-second margin with 28.7 seconds on three head. With only one-tenth of a second separating Staudt and Stetson Vest going into Round 3, the tie-down roping title came down to a one-header. “I didn’t think the calf was as good as he was, but I took a great start, my horse was good and we just made a practice run on the ground, basically,” Staudt said. Winning the tie-down roping was worth $4,917. As a team roping header with JC Flake, they won the first round in 4.9 seconds, tied for fourth in the second round with a 6.3-second run and tied for second in the third round in 4.8 seconds to win the average by 2.9 seconds with 16.0 seconds on three head. “It’s really fun to win in team roping since you win with your partner, and that’s someone you worked hard with and there’s more emotion to it,” Staudt said. “He (Flake) played a huge role in it. Winning the first round by like half a second was all because of how fast his heel shot was, and that played a big part in the week since you get a rhythm on the arena.” Winning the team roping was worth $4,410 and helped Staudt win all-around cowboy honors with $9,327. “It was one of those weekends where everything was going your way,” Staudt said. Before his Loveland win, Staudt was third in the Mountain States standings for the all-around title, 12th in the team roping heading standings with $1,230 and 13th in tie-down roping with $1,117. He squeaked into the team roping by a margin of $98 and slipped into the field of tie- down ropers because Pruitt opted for the Roping Fiesta in San Angelo, Texas, that weekend. Staudt is focused on college rodeo and finishing his ag business degree with a minor in finance from the University of Wyoming this spring. “I was going to go one more year on my permit, but with this opportunity and the chances this will give me, I’ll buy my rookie card,” Staudt said. “I wanted to get through school and then circuit rodeo, but this gives a guy the opportunity to get into bigger rodeos, and it’ll be fun to go to rodeos like San Angelo.”
