TANNER TOMLINSON AGE: 20 EVENT: Team Roping Heading HOMETOWN: Angleton, Texas EARNINGS: $22,534
When did you find out you were the rookie of the year? It came down to a pretty close deal, and the last check I won was at Abilene (Texas) on Sept. 19. I
What’s the most important lesson you learned during your rookie year? Over the Fourth (of July) I was in a slump and let it get to me, and so I had to regroup and stay positive.
placed and pulled ahead in the rookie race during the second round, so I had to sit and wait for the whole rodeo to see if I would get that money. It was a little nerve-wracking. What’s the most important lesson you learned during your rookie year? Honestly, just to stay positive and take it a rodeo at a time. When things don’t go well, move on to the next one since there’s always more. There were a couple of times this summer where I wasn’t winning as much as I wanted. The Fourth of July run was pretty tough, I didn’t win any money at all, so I had to learn to keep my head up and keep moving to the next one. How did COVID-19 impact your rookie year? It was just odd because everything we entered, everyone went to. There wasn’t much picking and choosing on what you wanted to go to. From week to week you looked at the Business Journal and went to as much as possible. Anything Zack Jongbloed and I could possibly make, we went to it. We drove a large amount and went everywhere we could make it work.
If you get down on yourself, it just goes downhill from there, so you need to have a positive attitude. I listened to people who brought my attitude and spirits up and stayed around a positive crowd and didn’t think about it much. How did COVID-19 impact your rookie year? I was kind of bummed at first since I wanted to go to Reno (Nev.) and Cheyenne (Wyo.) and they got canceled, but we all got to go rodeo, and it was a blessing to go to as many as we could. What do you consider to be the turning point in the season? Doing well in Spanish Fork (Utah) was a big deal for me because it got my hopes back up and got me back in the zone. I roped good the rest of the year. I started really looking at the rookie standings when we were in Filer, Idaho, and then placed at a few more. I got within $1,000 of Britt (Smith) and realized how much it meant when I was that close to closing the gap.
