Home Cookin’ BY TRACY RENCK W hen it comes to tie-down roping, Marty Yates knows only one way to live – on the edge. That approach paid dividends at the 49th Annual Cowboy Capital of the World PRCA Rodeo in Stephenville, Texas, where he captured the title with an arena-record time of 7.2 seconds. Yates wins hometown rodeo in record fashion

Being victorious in Stephenville is extra special for Yates, who was born and raised there. “The rodeo is a big deal here in

Stephenville, and to know everybody in the stands who has been rooting for you all year long and to come home to the last rodeo of the (regular season) and do well in front of everybody is a pretty cool feeling,” Yates said. Before his record run, Yates built some momentum by taking home the title at the River City Rodeo in Omaha, Neb., with a 7.4-second run. “When I won Omaha, I felt like I made a very controlled run,” Yates said. “Then, in Stephenville I got another great start and got him tied up.” RETURNINGTOWRANGLER NFR Lightning-fast, record runs are nothing new for Yates. On Jan. 20, he broke the arena record at the 112th National Western Stock Show and Rodeo in Denver with a 6.8-second run. For his performances in Omaha and Stephenville, Yates earned $3,751 and $2,447, respectively, which solidified his fifth-consecutive trip to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. “Going into the last week, I was 13th in the world standings, and I knew I probably needed to win a check to make sure I got into the NFR,” Yates said.

“I really didn’t know I broke the record until someone told me later, and it was really cool to do that,” said the 24-year-old Yates, who made his run Sept. 29. “Anytime you’re trying to catch fast, you’re running at the barrier and trying to get as close as you can. I take risks every time I back in the corner. I’ve always been someone who tries to win first every time I nod my head. That’s who I am and that’s how I rope.” Yates broke the rodeo record by one-tenth of a second. The record had been set in 2002 by Kurt Goulding and FredWhitfield and matched by Tyson Durfey (2016) and Tuf Cooper (2017). This was the second time Yates won in Stephenville, the first coming in 2015 on a 7.5-second run.
