2003 Pendleton memories

The storied Pendleton Round-Up will have its 2023 rodeo, Sept. 13-16. The rodeo is rich in tradition and the Round-Up is the only rodeo in the world that has a grass arena. The grass was installed in 1953 for the high school foot ball team to be able to use the arena. It is now one of the Round-Up’s many claims to fame. Let’s hit the rewind button and watch action from the 2003 Pendleton Round-Up in the video on this page. For a point of reference, here were the 2003 Pendleton winners, all-around Kyle Lockett ($8,645, team roping and steer roping); bareback rider Davey Shields (168 points on two head), (high score: 86, Jason Jeter); steer wrestler Josh Lessman (19.1 seconds on three head), (fast time: 5.3, Brad Gleason); team ropers Jake Barnes/Boogie Ray (19.6 seconds on three head), (fast time: 5.7 Tee Woolman/Kyle Lockett); saddle bronc riders Rod Hay and Jesse Bail (167 points on two head), (high score: 86, Billy Etbauer and Bail); tie-down roper Jerome Schneeberger (25.6 seconds on three head), (fast time: 7.9, Schneeberger); barrel racer Charmayne James (56.34 seconds on two head), (fast time: 27.80, James); bull rider Fred Boettcher (175 points on two head), (high score: 89, Boettcher); steer roper Jason Stewart (40.2 seconds on three head), (fast time: 11.1, Jarrett Blessing). – Tracy Renck
