MAKING A MARK The ProRodeo Sports News turns 70 BY TRACY RENCK T he history of the ProRodeo Sports News is long and storied to get to this year, where it is celebrating its 70th year in publication. Since its inception in 1952 the banner head read Rodeo Sports . It was known as the Rodeo Sports News until 1978 when it became known as the ProRodeo Sports News , which it is still known as today. The ProRodeo Sports News has evolved over the years with feature stories on contestants, coverage of all the big rodeos and fan-favorite stand-alone elements like the Cowboy Grille. On Jan. 12, 2018, in order to continue to bring fans and competitors the best coverage in rodeo, the ProRodeo Sports News went digital to keep readers updated 24/7 on the latest rodeo news. A new PSN is available online digitally in flip-book format for your mobile phone, tablet, and computer every two weeks to keep you updated on the latest rodeos, events, and stories.

In 1952, your ProRodeo Sports News was born. This year, as we celebrate 70 years of being your premier source for rodeo news, we take a look back at the highlights of 1952 and some of the notable folks who - just like the PSN - are still going strong 70 years later!

1933 Hoofs and Horns is first published.
1945 The Buckboard came into circulation.
1952 PSN becomes a stand-alone publication. The Buckboard continues its circulation.

PSN’S LONG JOURNEY The ProRodeo Sports News has come a long way since 1952 and served different purposes over the years. In its infancy until 2018, the ProRodeo Sports News was a must-have going down the road, so cowboys knew what rodeos to enter and when the books were closing on rodeos. With no internet for years and no digital PSN until 2018 and – no way to enter rodeos online until the last few years – cowboys had to have the ProRodeo Sports News . “The PSN in the 1960s, ‘70s and ‘80s that was where you got all the association’s information on entering, being a professional and having an association that was keeping up with championship points with interesting pictures and all that kind of stuff,” ProRodeo Hall of Famer Donnie Gay said. “It was the reading we all did from front to back, every word and re-read it. You always wanted to have the freshest ProRodeo Sports News . It is all push button now and you can look at it on your phone, and it has been well done. Now, you don’t have to have it but it has good information, and if you can operate your iPhone now you can access about anything. “Back when I was going the ProRodeo Sports News wasn’t something you were
