Oregonian Brown wins Pendleton steer wrestling Home Cookin’

BY TRACY RENCK J esse Brown is going to come up short of making the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. However, the steer wrestler will always remember the 2019 PRCA season as the year he won the storied Pendleton (Ore.) Round-Up for the first time. Brown, who grew up and lives in Baker City, Ore., which is 90 minutes east of Pendleton, captured the coveted title with a 14.8-second time in the two-head average. “It was a bucket-list one to win, and I had a bunch of family and friends there, and that was cool,” said Brown, 27. “The victory lap was unreal. It was awesome. The place was completely full. When I came around in front of the box all my buddies were hootin’ and hollerin’ and throwing their hats, there’s no better feeling than that right there.” Brown departed Pendleton after earning $9,982, which pushed him from 31st to 25th in the Sept. 16 PRCA | RAM World Standings with a career-best $50,373. He was $22,476 behind Tanner Brunner, who was No. 15 in the Sept. 16 standings. The season ends Sept. 30. Brown won his first Pendleton crown in storybook fashion, setting a Pendleton record with a 3.7-second run. The previous record was 3.8 seconds, set by K.C. Jones in 2001. “That run was pretty much a blur, but it was a cool feeling,” Brown said. “I knew if I executed on that steer, I could have a chance to be fast, but I never thought I would get a record. When I saw the scoreboard and it said 3.7, it was a surreal feeling.” Brown would love to be heading to his first Wrangler NFR in December, but he’s keeping things in perspective. “It was a bit of a disappointment not to make the NFR, but to finish off the season by winning Pendleton, which I think also clinched the Columbia River (Circuit) year-end championship, was great,” Brown said. “I competed last year (at the RAM) National Circuit Finals Rodeo, but I did terrible in (Kissimmee) Florida. I have to redeemmyself and win some money there this year.” Brown, who was the 2017 PRCA | Resistol Steer Wrestling Rookie of the Year, is already looking forward to 2020. “I definitely have more confidence going into next season, and the goal will still be the same, to make the NFR,” Brown said.
