NEW MEXICO STATE FAIR & RODEO

Mitchell, Doescher win Albuquerque with new horses New Rides BY MATT NABER S pencer Mitchell and Cody Doescher made their first run in the the steer up, and I just have to finish the run. If they don’t do their job, then I can’t do mine.” The ropers spent the summer competing with a total change to the equine half of their team, and Albuquerque marked the return for Doescher’s horse, Ginger. The 16-year-old American Quarter Horse was eager to hit the arena after missing two months of rodeo competition due to an abscess in her foot. “It feels awesome to have her back, it felt good to ride her around 3-second range for the 2019 season at a pivotal point in the year, winning the NewMexico State Fair & Rodeo in Albuquerque, Sept. 16. In 3.7 seconds, they won $4,510 and gained hope of qualifying for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. “Cody and I haven’t been 3 (seconds) all year, but some guys made great runs at the beginning of the perf and that got the mood set for it to be a fast roping,” Mitchell said. “We knew going into it that we had a steer we were very capable of winning the rodeo on, so we went at him with nothing to lose.” Doescher credited his partner. “The header is the quarterback,” Doescher said “They have to set everything up and stay behind the barrier and set much less to rope on her,” Doescher said. “She gets pretty wound up, but she was the same as always. When you get close to the arena, she knows it’s game time.” Mitchell’s primary ride, Houdini, remains out of competition for at least the next four months to recover from surgery on his injured hind flexor tendon. “It’s huge to lose one horse, but to lose the whole team is very crucial,”
