BY SCOTT KANIEWSKI J amie Howlett is having his best season. And the Australian bareback rider who calls Rapid City, S.D., home now says he’s doing his best riding. That level of talent helped the 29-year-old win the Lewiston (Idaho) Roundup, posting an 85-point ride on Sankey Pro Rodeo & PhenomGenetics’ Pick Up Sticks, earning $3,203. “It was pretty good,” Howlett said. “It’s always been on my bucket list to win one of those rodeos. It happened that I had a really good horse to do it.” Before this season, the most money Howlett had earned came in 2018, with $36,467. As of Sept. 16, Howlett was 26th in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings with $52,165. He was about $18,000 away from breaking into the Top 15. With three weeks left in the regular season, Howlett was entered at numerous rodeos across the Western United States in hopes of earning enough money to qualify for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. “I sort of had a mishap in Puyallup, but that’s in the past, so I can look to the future,” Howlett said. “I feel like I’m riding the best I’ve ever ridden in my career.” Howlett bounced around the U.S. the last few weeks. Among his numerous stops were the Pendleton (Ore.) Round-Up, the NewMexico State Fair & Rodeo in Albuquerque, the Omaha (Neb.) River City Rodeo, the American Royal Pro Rodeo in Kansas City, Mo., and the 50th Annual Cowboy Capital of the World PRCA Rodeo in Stephenville, Texas. “I’m entered up in sort of every rodeo and going to try and draw good horses,” he said. “I’ll try to make them work and try and catch up ground.” He’s also hoping to keep riding the way he’s riding. “You just keep everything basic and don’t overthink stuff and keep doing what you love,” he said. “Everything falls into place really.” Aussie bareback rider notches win
