BY TRACY RENCK R odeo has always been in Trey Young’s life. Young’s dad, Doug, and grandfather Jack were tie- down ropers. Trey’s mother, Vicki, was a barrel racer. She passed away in 2011 at the age of 53 from breast cancer. “Ever since I was a little kid I wanted to rope,” said Young, 28. “I have been lucky because even though we were ranching, we always prioritized roping.” Trey and his father ranch on the Young Ranch in

Dupree, S.D. “We run about 250 cows,” said Trey, who is an only child. In 2015, Trey won the PRCA | Resistol Rookie of the Year honor in tie-down roping after earning $28,329. This year, Trey has stuck to competing primarily in the Badlands Circuit, posting a career-best season. In the Sept. 16 Badlands Circuit standings in tie-down roping, Young had a commanding lead with $21,822 – $9,348 in front of second-place Joe Schmidt. Trey was just outside the top 50 in the Sept. 16 PRCA | RAMWorld Standings with $29,966.
