Quick Studies Menz/Tash win Dixie National in second rodeo together

BY TRACY RENCK S ometimes experience means everything when it comes to team ropers. However, that didn’t matter for header Tucker Menz and heeler Michael Tash. The duo, with only two prior runs together at PRCA rodeos, looked like savvy veterans, winning the average at the Dixie National Rodeo in Jackson, Miss., with a 10.1-second time on two head. “It felt great to win,” said Menz, who is competing on his PRCA permit. “It’s a good boost. This is my first year to enter the ProRodeos hard and go at them as much as I can, and this was a great way to get things going.” Menz, 20, is a sophomore onWeatherford (Texas) College’s rodeo team. Tash, 23, is a PRCA rookie. “I had some big plans for my rookie year, but things weren’t going as planned,” Tash said. “We made the eight-hour drive to Jackson, and we just

wanted to knock down our first one and see how good we could be.” They were superb, winning the first round in 4.5 seconds. “Tucker did a great job of scoring,” Tash said. “He was able to gather his horse at the line and get out at the barrier, and he got it on him fast. He gave me a good shot, and it worked out.” Menz and Tucker made their second run Feb. 11. They registered a 5.6-second time and then had to wait. “We drew a good one,” Menz said. “They had placed on him in the first round, and I knew as long as I was good on the barrier our roping would take care of the rest. It’s hard waiting to see if the time will hold because you don’t know how it is going to play out. Michael called and told me we won it, and that was cool.” Menz and Tash each earned $3,757 in Jackson. This was Menz’s first career PRCA win and the second for Tash.

“I will probably never forget this rodeo,” Menz said. Tash acknowledged it was “a great accomplishment.”
