PRCA AWARDS

2018 Pendleton Whisky Let ’er Buck Stock of the Year Awards Each year, the top ProRodeo cowboys in each roughstock event vote for the top bucking horses and bulls. Contestants vote in the fall, and the winning animals are acclaimed at the PRCA’s annual awards banquet in December just before the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Stock contractors are proud of these top buckers. They invest heavily in purchases and/or breeding programs, feed and medical care for their bucking stock for years, fostering the animals’ growth and development until they are ready to perform at rodeos. In 2010, Pendleton Whisky expanded its ProRodeo involvement by sponsoring the stock awards, which are now known as the PendletonWhisky Let ‘er Buck Stock of the Year Awards. PendletonWhisky provides cash prizes for the top three animals in each event and funds the stipends for stock contractors who provide bucking stock for the Wrangler NFR. Bulls 1. Spotted Demon, Big Stone Rodeo, Inc. 2. Sweetpro’s Bruiser, D&H Cattle 3. Hot and Ready, Smith, Harper & Morgan The 2018 PendletonWhisky Let ‘er Buck Stock of the Year Awards went to: Bareback Horses 1. Virgil, C5 Rodeo 2. Onion Ring, Korkow Rodeos 3. Showstomper, Frontier Rodeo Saddle Broncs 1. Lunatic From Hell, Burch Rodeo 2. Maple Leaf, Frontier Rodeo 3. (Tie) Spring Planting, Flying Five Rodeo; Floodtide, Rosser Rodeo

Best bareback horse 2018 Virgil C5 Rodeo

Virgil won Bareback Horse of the Year for a second consecutive year after taking many cowboys to the winner’s circle in 2018. This past December, the 10-year-old gelding made his third trip to the Thomas & Mack Center.“It really means a lot to us, me as an owner yes, but it means more to my crew,” saidVernMcDonald, owner of C5 Rodeo.“We all love this horse and it justmeans somuch to do it two years in a rowwith the same horse. You can’t put a price on it, it’s overwhelming.” During Round 5 of the 2018 Finals, Clayton Biglow scored 93 points on Virgil, setting a newWrangler NFR and arena record for the highest bareback riding score. In 2017, Tim O’Connell won Round 3 of theWrangler NFR with a 91.5-point ride on the 1,600-pound horse.Their paths crossed again at the Fallon County Fair & Rodeo in Baker, Mont., Aug. 19, 2018 and the result was record-breaking with a 91-point ride. McDonald said he’s been unable to find another bronc like Virgil since buying him in 2013. “They don’t make them like that,” McDonald said. “I’ve been trying to find another Virgil or raise another Virgil and I just can’t – they’re so few and far between.”

Lunatic From Hell Burch Rodeo

PRCA ProRodeo photo by Greg Westfall

The son of Lunatic Fringe was a heavenly draw in 2018. “It’s what we bank on every year when crossing studs andmares,”saidMatt Burch, co-owner of Burch Rodeo with brother Chad Burch.“It doesn’t happen often because there are a lot of great horses now, and to win it in this day and age means a lot. That’s what you raise them for, you raise them to be the best.” At the 2018Wrangler NFR, CoBurn Bradshaw scored 87.5 points on Lunatic From Hell. By Round 10, Bradshaw was crowned the 2018

Saddle Bronc Riding Average Champion. For the 2018 regular season, Dawson Hay scored 92.5 points aboard Lunatic From Hell at the United States Open Xtreme Broncs Match in Faith, S.D. Standing at about 15.3 hands tall and weighing in at 1,350 pounds, this 10-year-old light-colored bay gelding has improved with age. “Everyone in this business is out to raise great horses and make it better for cowboys,”Burch said.“Better horses mean more chances to win and my hat’s off to those guys, everyone has improved their breeding programs.” Swapping studs, artificial insemination and other breeding practices are some of the ways Burch credited for the improvements made in raising roughstock. “The world of bucking horses is starting to blow up,”Burch said.“It’s a tough ballgame, and we love playing it.”

Best bucking bull 2018

Cowboys love a challenge, particularly if it’s an unrideable bull. Big Stone Rodeo, Inc.’s Spotted Demon came out the victor every time he was drawn at a PRCA event in 2018. “They don’t come along every day and when they do it’s just a bonus,” said Bruce Sunstrum, owner of Big Stone Rodeo, Inc.“It means quite a bit because there’s a lot of bulls out there to pick from.” At the 2018 Wrangler NFR, Boudreaux Campbell drew Spotted Demon for Round 10 but was immediately bucked off. The last time a PRCA cowboy made a qualified ride on the bull was Tyler Taylor with an 89.5-point ride at California Rodeo Salinas, July 23, 2017. The 1,800-pound behemoth and last year’s runner-up for Bull of the Year got the best of many top bull riders in 2018. “When he bucks and turns back, he kicks pretty high and he’s a big bull,”Sunstrum said.“He’s not a real mean bull, but he’s got what it takes to be a champion.” Spotted Demon Big Stone Rodeo, Inc.

Pearson and Irwin bought Scooter, 14, in 2015 from Jason Reiss and he’s won Horse of the Year the last two years in a row. He is a horse that’s easy to compete on, does well in the corner and gives his rider a chance to win no matter what kind of steer is drawn. “He’s just gotten better and better,” Pearson said. “When we got him, he was fat and lazy. He got into fighting shape and really took off from there. I wouldn’t have this level of success without him. He’s been the game-changer in mine and Kyle’s careers. He has pure instinct and likes his job. He’s very laid back and doesn’t let much bother him.”

This is the fourth time Minor’s made it to the WranglerNFRbycompeting on Bob. This 17-year-old American Quarter Horse gelding is very versatile and brings a lot of try and heart to the arena. “He’s been in second place for Horse of the Year and I know he’s a good horse with a few quirks,” Minor said. “There’s not many times in the year he costs me or messes up, it’s mostly on me if I don’t win. I’ve ridden a lot of good horses and he’s the best one I’ve had and doesn’t make many mistakes. You’re only as good as your horse and he’s definitely changed my game. When I’m on him, I’m more confident and I know I’m going to win.”

Team Roping (heeling)

Zans Colonel Shine “Colonel” owners Jake andTasha Long Jake Long bought Colonel eight years ago, as a 6-year-old from Oklahoma-based Dixon Flowers Rope Horses. Since, the horse has won AQHA/PRCA Horse of the Year three times (2016-18) and has helped him get to five Wrangler NFRs. Long will competed on Colonel, 15, in Las Vegas for a sixth time after finishing eighth in the 2018 PRCA | RAM World Standings. “From the get-go he was like nothing I’d ridden before,” Jake Long said. “A lot of the better horses have been high strung and that makes themgood because they always want to go. But it’s unique for him to be so laid back and relaxed, and still be something you know every time he goes in the box he will be ready to fire. He is like a little kid, he gets a lot of cookies and wants to be in the middle of everything. He’s constantly looking for attention and has a playful personality. Every time I hook up the trailer, he watches me and is disappointed when he doesn’t get on the trailer.”

Cooperslittletoy “Cooper” owner Chris Glover

It took a few years for Cooper to fine tune his steer roping skills, but this 11-year-old American Quarter Horse was worth the wait. What he lacks in size, hemakes up for in ability. Standing at 4 feet 7 inches tall, Glover thought Cooper would be too small for steer roping but being built like a bulldogmeans Cooper brings plenty of power to the arena. Chris Glover’s other horse, Champ, also won Horse of the Year in 2016.“In steer roping, the horse is 90 percent of it,”Glover said.“You don’t win if you don’t have good ones. He (Cooper) has a mind of his own and is ornery, that’s what makes him so good. He scores better than any horse I’ve ever had and he’s the fastest horse I’ve ridden.”

DM Sissy Hatyday owner Dan and Leslie Kinsel

Hailey Kinsel and her powerful yellow horse continue to add titles to their already impressive resume. Finishing as reserve world champion in 2017, the duo won the 2018 championship at theWrangler NFR in Las Vegas. The 2018 WPRA | AQHA Barrel Racing Horse of the Year, DM Sissy Hayday, is an 8-year-old palomino mare out of Royal Sissy Irish by PC Frenchmans Hayday. Kinsel knows Sister can get to top speed in a hurry and stop just as quickly. The duo currently holds the arena record at the Wrangler NFR with a 13.11-second run. “She likes the job, and she likes the way we handle her,”Kinsel said.“I think she’s as in love with the game as I am. I think she does her job because she likes it.”

This 17-year-old American Quarter Horse brings a solid and consistent ride every time. Big Time didn’t have any rodeo experience when Milligan bought him four years ago in Duncan, Okla., but last year he took the 21-year-old cowboy to his firstWrangler NFR.“I realized hewas unique at the beginning of my rookie year and last year was when he started getting good,” Milligan said. “He’s gotten to where he handles cattle better, and he can take the jerks from big calves a lot better too. I wouldn’t have won near what I won this year if it wasn’t for him. And, I wouldn’t have won Rookie of the Year in 2017. He’s helped my roping a lot and he’s given me more confidence. I know I will be riding one of the better horses and that gives you more of an edge.”

PRORODEO AWARDS

John Justin Committeeperson of the Year

Justin Boots, in recognizing the hundreds of thousands of hours of work that rodeo committee members around the country donate to putting on their local rodeos, has long made a practice of honoring 125 outstanding volunteers around the country through its John Justin Standard of the West program. PRCA rodeos vote on the recipient of Justin’s national award for a committeeperson whose dedication represents the deeds of those thousands of volunteers. In 2018 that award went Jerry Shepherd of the Ute Stampede in Nephi, Utah. Winners of the John Justin Committeeperson of the Year Award include: 1990 Philip Diehl, Pawhuska Elks Rodeo, Pawhuska, Okla. 1991 Cletus Schenk, Red River PRCA Rodeo, Wichita Falls, Texas 1992 Duane Mahlum, Wolf Point (Mont.) Jerry Shepherd, an all-purpose member of the Ute Stampede in Nephi, Utah, received the PRCA’s John Justin Committeeman of the Year in 2018. “This is quite the deal to be recognized with this honor,” Shepherd said. “I can’t believe that so many people thought that much of what I did. I really appreciate this.” Shepherd, who qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in 2004 as a bull rider, has been a member of the Ute Stampede Rodeo committee for three years. “Since I joined the committee I have tried to do whatever is needed to help, but I do like focusing on the production of the rodeo,”he said.“I got into it to make the rodeo better for the cowboys. I entered that rodeo during my whole career and it was good, but every rodeo can be better.” Shepherd, who finished ninth in the 2004 world standings, acknowledged joining the rodeo committee gave him a different perspective. “It was a big eye-opener, seeing the other side of things,” Shepherd said. I went there with the attitude that I knew everything about rodeo, but I had no idea how much work goes into putting on a rodeo.”

2019 PRCA MEDIA GUIDE

The PRCA award honors contract personnel (such as announcers, bullfighters, clowns, specialty acts, secretaries and timers) who have been PRCA members for at least 15 years and have committed their lives to the rodeo industry, yet received little recognition for their commitment and contributions. The nomination process was open; an external selection committee chose five finalists, and PRCA contract personnel members voted among the finalists. The posthumous recipient of the inaugural Contract Personnel Lifetime Achievement Award was long-time PRCA secretary Donita Barnes, wife of ProRodeo Hall of Fame inductee and PRCA stock contractor Bob Barnes, and mentor to thousands of contestants and others involved with Barnes rodeos. The PRCA renamed the award in her honor in 2012. The 2018 recipient of the Donita Barnes Lifetime Achievement Award was the late Hadley Barrett, who for decades announced at big and small rodeos throughout the U.S., theWrangler National Finals Rodeo (1968, 1976, 1979, 1983 and 2008), National Finals Steer Roping (1967) and seven times at the Canadian Finals. The veteran announcer was named PRCA Announcer of the Year four times (1983, 1985, 1989 and 2002) and was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 1999. Donita Barnes Lifetime Achievement Award

Recipients of the Donita Barnes Lifetime Achievement Award are: 2011 Donita Barnes 2012 Art and Linda Alsbaugh 2013 Fred and Norma Dorenkamp 2014 Quail Dobbs 2015 Cotton Rosser 2016 Karen Vold 2017 Jim and Julie Sutton 2018 Hadley Barrett

Legendary PRCA Announcer Hadley Barrett, left, who passed away on March 2, 2017, left a lasting mark on the PRCA and rodeo industry. The final rodeo Barrett announced was the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, which ran Feb. 9-26, 2017; he was 87. Fellow ProRodeo Hall of Fame announcer Randy Corley worked San Antonio with Barrett, who also was his father-in-law. Randy is married to Hadley’s daughter Michelle Corley.“I think winning this award would rank really, really high to Hadley,”Randy said. “Other people who have won this award were all friends of his, and he would really feel that this has placed him among some awfully good people.”Barrett became a PRCA member in 1965. He was the voice of the Sidney (Iowa) Championship Rodeo starting in 1983, worked the Buffalo Bill Rodeo (North Platte, Neb.) for more than 30 years, the Greeley (Colo.) Stampede for more than 20 years and worked for more than a decade at Cheyenne (Wyo.) Frontier Days.
