2019 PRCA Media Guide - Awards
Resistol Rookies of the Year A PRCA rookie is a cowboy competing in his first year as a full member of the organization. (Cowboys first join under the PRCA’s permit system, which allows them to compete for some time without becoming full-fledged members. Once a cowboy has “filled his permit” by winning $1,000 at PRCA- sanctioned rodeos, he can apply to become a full member and is considered a rookie for the remainder of that season.) The PRCA’s Resistol Rookies of the Year are the first-season cowboys who earn the most money in their events during that season.
The Resistol All-around Rookie of theYear is the rookie who earned themost money among all rookies in two or more events. The PRCA rookie standings and Rookie of the Year Awards are sponsored by Resistol Hats. In 2018, 20-year-old Tanner Green received the All-Around honor; the Cotulla, Texas, cowboy won by earning $52,394. “I wasn’t focused on winning all-around rookie of the year,” Green said. “I didn’t know I won until I got a phone call (from the PRCA). But it is very cool to win this award.” Green won the bulk of his money in tie-down roping, as he earned $34,822, finishing fifth in the rookie standings. He also earned $17,572 as a team roping header, which was sixth among rookies. “I don’t feel like I do one or the other better,”Green said of the two events. “I feel like some days I head better than I tie-down rope and sometimes I tie- down rope better than I head. I think it just depends on the day.” Green’s path into the rodeo world was carved out when he was just a baby. He’s the grandson of ProRodeo Hall of Famer Phil Lyne. Lyne is a five-time world champion (all-around, tie-down roping, 1971), (all-around, tie-down, 1972) and (steer roping in 1990). “Growing up we roped every day and practiced every day, but there was never pressure on me,” Green said. “He (Lyne) wanted me to do whatever I wanted to do. I always looked at him as my grandfather. I knew how good he was and what he did back in the day, but we never really talked about that. We just talked about my roping. He has helpedme a lot withmy mental game. Not a lot of stuff bothers him, and he doesn’t overthink things. Growing up around that helped me have a stronger mindset in rodeo.” Green plans to move on to bigger and better things in rodeo. “Now that I have a taste for it and know what to do and what not to do, I think 2019 will be different and hopefully I will make the NFR,”Green said.“I have my horses and partner lined up and I’m excited to have an even better year.”
Texas cowboy Tanner Green earned the 2018 All-around Rookie of the Year Award by winning $34,822 in tie- down roping and $17,572 in team roping.
