SANTA MARIA ELKS RODEO SANTA MARIA, CALIF. Campbell on track to return to Wrangler NFR Keeping Pace BY TRACY RENCK F or some young PRCA cowboys, maintaining success is not easy. Twenty-year-old Boudreaux Campbell is not only winning rodeos but has established himself as one of the top PRCA bull riders in this just his third season going full time. Campbell qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo his first two seasons and is aiming for his third. The Crockett, Texas, cowboy had his skills on full display at the Santa Maria (Calif.) Elks Rodeo, capturing the title at the ProRodeo Tour stop with an 85.5-point ride on Rosser Rodeo’s Black Kat. Karney

“That was a young bull, I had never drawn him before,” Campbell said. “It was one of the first times they brought him to town, and he was really good. He was really fast turning back to the left, which is into my hand. Right after the whistle, he threw me out to the outside. He was just spinning the whole time.” Campbell made his ride on May 31 and had to see if it would hold for the win at the rodeo which ended June 2. It did, and Campbell earned $3,710. That put him in ninth place in the June 13 PRCA | RAMWorld Standings with $60,599. Last year was Campbell’s Santa Maria Elks Rodeo debut, finishing third with an 81.5-point ride. He was happy to move up two spots in 2019. “It was really cool to win it this year,” Campbell said. Campbell was the bull riding PRCA | Resistol Rookie of the Year in 2017, earning $144,601 and finished 10th in the world standings. A year ago, Campbell placed 14th in the world standings with $135,469. “Everything is looking good this season for me, I just need to keep riding my bulls,” Campbell said. “I just need to keep staying on and moving up the standings.” Campbell believes his two years of competing at the Wrangler NFR will help him as he marches toward another trip to Las Vegas in December. “It was awesome to get to go to the NFR, and then getting to go back last year was great,” Campbell said. “You learn something new every year, and every year I feel like I’mmore comfortable and I know what I’m doing, and I know how to handle myself. Every day is about getting better. I want to win the world title. That’s my goal. If you stay on every single bull they run under you, it’s hard not to pay the winner at the end of the year.” First priority for Campbell is taking care of business during the upcoming summer run. “I’m really excited,” he said. “It’s always fun getting to leave the house and going to all these cool rodeos and making a bunch of money. I’m ready to get packed up and get going.” IN BRIEF KNOWLES CLAIMS STEER WRESTLING CROWN
