Bareback rider heating up with summer season IN HIS WORDS JAKE BROWN
M an, it’s tough to make the Finals every year. You’ve got to be around people who have a good attitude, that have the same want-to you have and who can push through when times get hard. You know what to expect and you rodeo hard all year long. Rodeo does feel like it’s year-round. Our biggest break is before our biggest event, the
Kissimmee, Fla., and have been plucking along since. But Denver, Fort Worth (Texas) and San Antonio were terrible. I started as bad as I ever have, but it’s turned around quickly. I would say the week before Kissimmee I went to some local, Texas rodeos and rode well. So when I went to Kissimmee I was ready and it lit a fire under me. After my ride at Clovis (Calif., Rodeo), I got
Jake Brown is gunning for his fifth consecutive trip to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. After a slow winter, the 29-year-old from Cleveland, Texas, has gotten hot. As of June 13, Brown had climbed to 12th in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings with $40,206, boosted by winning the Woodward (Okla.) Elks Rodeo, June 5-8. After missing most of May with a groin injury, Brown is healed and fresh and ready for the summer run.
National Finals Rodeo. October and November are slow, but I still try to get on some horses. I don’t get on a bunch. The only time we get a big break is the end of the regular season and before the NFR. You get to heal up. My dad, Paul, is the coach at Hill College and I’ll get on some horses there or I have a good buddy who owns horses. I don’t get on them three times a week like when we are rodeoing, but I’ll get on once a week or so. Qualifying for the NFR is like a dream come true every year you do it. It’s what you looked up to when you were a little kid and now, you’re actually living that dream. I don’t think it could ever get old. Every time you make it, you’re so excited. I don’t feel any more pressure to get back there than I’ve felt before. I’ve heard people say it’s easier after you’ve made it the first time, but I don’t think it’s any easier. I guess you know what it takes, but it’s not any easier. My winter was the worst I’ve ever had. Then I started turning it on in March. I had a good (RAMNational Circuit Finals Rodeo)
off and my groin got sore. I let it heal up for a month. I feel great. I’m ready for it. If a guy has been to too many rodeos, he can get sour or down. That hasn’t happened to me. I’m chomping at the bit. I travel with Trey Moore III (25 years old) and Zach Hibler (22). We have a blast. Everybody picks on each other, we all have good attitudes, it makes rodeo fun. I feel like an old pops. Zach calls me Pops. I like going with the young guys. They stay hungry. I do all the entering but I make them watch and learn. My wife, Nicole, and I are expecting our first child in December, during the NFR. I’ve told her she’ll have to hold it in. Yeah, we all want to get to the Finals, but the main goal is you have to have fun while you’re doing it. One day you’re not going to do it anymore. You might gripe about a six-hour drive, but when you’re retired, you’re going to wish you were doing it again. So, soak up every minute and never get down and never whine too much about anything.

For the second time in his career, bull rider Tim Bingham has overcome a broken neck to return to the sport. He put a stamp on his physical therapy by winning the Cedar City (Utah) Champion- ship Rodeo with 87.5 points on Diamond G Rodeo’s Margie’s Tubby, June 8. Never Giving Up
“There’s no way of explaining it, you either do it or you don’t – if you don’t do it, you’ll never understand it, and if you do it, you won’t be able to explain it. It’s just something you can’t let go of.” –TIM BINGHAM

The number of rodeos saddle bronc rider Mitch Pollock won the

titles at the Wild Rogue Pro Rodeo in Central Point, Ore., and the Fort Herriman (Utah) PRCA Rodeo outright and split the win with Lefty Holman at the Santa Maria (Calif.) Elks Rodeo, a ProRodeo Tour stop. After the three victories, Pollock earned $6,097 and moved up to 19th place in the June 13 PRCA | RAM World Standings with $40,905.

COWBOY GRILLE WITH AMBER BAILLIE
Why did you purchase your contestant card? Cooper: I was almost done with college and had filled my permit. I have good horses now and figured 2019 was a good year to start and try to win rookie of the year. How are you feeling about the season? Cooper: It started out pretty rough, I’m hoping it turns around. I haven’t been doing my job like I should. I’ve drawn some bad calves and some decent ones that I didn’t capitalize on. How did you get involved in rodeo? Cooper: Everyone in my family has rodeoed. Ever since I was little, I wanted to be involved in it. I feel like it’s a good sport for everyone to be a part of. You get to travel, meet a lot of people and have to work at it. I wouldn’t be where I’m at today if it wasn’t for Karen Herbst (owner and operator of the Cinderella Ranch and Arena in Whitesboro, Texas, who leases roping horses to cowboys). How did you earn a college rodeo scholarship? After graduating from Hill College in Hillsboro, Texas, this year, tie-down roper Cooper Mathews plans to make the most of his rookie year, hitting the summer run hard with traveling partner Ryan Thibodeaux. As of June 13, Mathews was seventh in the PRCA | Resistol Rookie Standings with $7,109. The 20-year-old from Cleburne, Texas, qualified for RFD-TV’s The American when he was 17 and won the first rodeo he competed at after buying his PRCA card in September 2018.
COOPER MATHEWS
Cooper: I grew up in Cleburne, which is about 20 minutes from Hillsboro. I was introduced to the rodeo coach there through mutual friends like Marty Yates and Cory Solomon. The coach had always wanted me to rodeo for him, and I finally got the opportunity. What did you study? Cooper: Agricultural business. I graduated on May 9. I want to keep rodeoing as much as possible and hopefully end up in the Top 15 and win a gold buckle someday. What rodeo achievement have you been most proud of? Cooper: In 2017, when I qualified for RFD-TV’s The American (he placed fifth in tie-down roping). With it being such a big rodeo and payout, it made me feel really good. They only take the best guys, and for as young as I was, it made me feel like this is really what I need to be doing…pursuing a career in rodeo. What’s your next goal? Cooper: To improve and work on stuff I need to get better at as far as keeping my composure, taking one calf at a time and not getting ahead of myself. My ultimate goal would be to get on a heater and make it to the National Finals Rodeo. Now, I’m focused on continuing to rope, taking one step at a time and trying to do the best that I can. What PRCA rodeo have you won the most money at? Cooper: At the RAM Texas Circuit Finals Rodeo, I won over $3,500. I’ve been saving my money and plan to enter in a lot of rodeos this summer. Who inspires you?
Cooper: Growing up, my rodeo idols were Joe Beaver and Roy Cooper. As I’ve gotten older, I look up to Clint Cooper and Marty Yates as competitors, how they approach different situations, and as everyday people, how they treat others. They’re good guys to be around. How do you prepare for competition? Cooper: I practice at my house. We have an arena, and I work on things I’m having trouble with to get better. I’ll rope with my dad, and when he’s not around I’ll practice with Clint Cooper or Ryan Thibodeaux. Every run is a challenge, it’s just you against the calf. What are your hobbies outside of rodeo?
Cooper: Pretty much everything outdoors like hunting and fishing. Sometimes I attempt to play golf even though I’m not very good at it. What are three things you can’t live without?
Cooper: My family, rodeo and cell phone. Do you have a favorite saying or quote? Cooper: Sprinkle some ándale on it. Clint Cooper says that, and it’s stuck with me. I like that it means to hustle up, don’t drag your feet and just get it done. What’s your favorite snack? Cooper: Cool Ranch Doritos and Sour Patch Kids. What’s your favorite thing to spend money on? Cooper: Probably shoes, I have all kinds of tennis shoes. I like to have a lot of options. What’s something about you that might surprise people? Cooper: I’m a bit of a neat freak. I like to keep my stuff clean and organized.

Injured and out SHORT ROUND
Branquinho’s 2019 season ends after knee injury
L uke Branquinho, a five-time PRCA Steer Wrestling World Champion, had his season come to an early conclusion June 2 when he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during a run at the Santa Maria (Calif.) Elks Rodeo, a ProRodeo Tour stop. “A steer came over my leg, and I’ve been to enough rodeos to know what happened,” Branquinho said about the injury.

Branquinho, who won world titles in 2004, 2008, 2011-12 and 2014, is scheduled to have surgery June 19 in Dallas. The surgery will be performed by Dr. Tandy Freeman of Justin Sportsmedicine. Branquinho was 32nd in the June 13 PRCA | RAM World Standings with $22,423. Branquinho, who has qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo 14 times – 2001-04, 2006-15 – expects to be sidelined until October. “The last three years it is kind of what has been going on with me (battling injuries),” said Branquinho, 38. “I’m hoping this is the end of it.” In 2018, Branquinho suffered a left biceps injury and in 2017 he was sidelined with a rotator cuff injury. Branquinho has 25 round wins at the Wrangler NFR, the most of any steer wrestler in PRCA history. Veteran saddle bronc rider Isaac Diaz’s journey to qualify for his seventh Wrangler National Finals Rodeo has hit a detour. The Desdemona, Texas, cowboy had surgery for a sports hernia May 30 in Philadelphia performed by Dr. William Meyers. Diaz expects to be out of action at least eight weeks. “My groin and lower abdomen both tore off my pelvis,” said Diaz, 32. “I irritated it back in Mercedes (Texas) in March, and it seemed like it was getting worse all spring and then it was getting better. It was back and forth, but I was riding (May 19) and I heard it pop like four times before I could get off the horse.” Diaz
Surgery sidelines saddle bronc rider Diaz
Diaz was 11th in the June 13 PRCA | RAM World Standings with $52,520. Diaz has qualified for the Wrangler NFR six times – 2007, 2009, 2012-13, 2015 and 2018. He finished a career-best sixth in the 2016 world standings. Diaz placed eighth last year. Although Diaz is going to be sidelined, he’s optimistic the injury will not ruin his season plans. “I don’t have any doubts whatsoever that I
can make the NFR,” Diaz said. “I’m hooked up with physical therapist Brad Bettis and told him I want to be back in eight weeks at the latest. He’s going to push me as hard as he can. I’m hoping to be back for Dodge City (Kan., July 31-Aug. 4).”
