SAN ANGELO STOCK SHOW & RODEO
Hometown cowboy Hancock wins crown Ric Andersen photo San Angelo’s Dylan Hancock wowed the sell-out crowd at the Foster Communications Coliseum by winning the average in tie-down roping.
Ever since Dylan Hancock was a little boy he dreamed of this moment. The moment happened April 19. The hometown cowboy clocked a 7.8-second run in the finals to clinch the title at the San Angelo Stock Show & Rodeo before a sellout crowd at the Foster Communications Coliseum. Hancock, 20, with his final run secured the average at 24.9 seconds on three head. “This is the coolest thing ever to win your hometown rodeo, especially as big as San Angelo is,” Hancock said. “This is one of the best rodeos of the year. This is really neat. I had family and friends everywhere here. It was really special. I know a world championship would top this (win), but it doesn’t get much better than this right now.” Hancock said he got himself in the right frame of mind by competing at a college rodeo that morning – and that magnified on the car ride to San Angelo. “We were jamming music, and we were so pumped,” said Hancock, who competes for Cisco (Texas) College and was roping at the Tarleton State Rodeo in Stephenville. Hancock has qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo as a team roping heeler, but tie-down roping is his main event.
Hancock proved his versatility a year ago as he won the PRCA Resistol Rookie of the Year All-Around and Tie-Down Roping titles. He finished 25th in the PRCA | RAM World Standings in tie-down roping with $74,998. That experience helped him in San Angelo. “I came from the back of the pack (he was the fourth cowboy out),” he said. “I had to make up a little ground and I probably had the best calf (tonight), and I used him. It was dang sure special.” Hancock had plenty of horsepower to make his fairy-tale night come true. “I was riding my traveling partner Riley Webb’s good horse, Rudy,” Hancock said. “I rode my good horse the first two rounds in California, and I roped in (California) April 20. Riley Webb and Cole Clemons finished fourth and second (in San Angelo), we are all rodeoing together this year. It was a great day.” Webb, 20, is the reigning PRCA Tie-Down Roping World Champion. After a big Playoff Series Rodeo victory in San Angelo where he earned more than $12,000, Hancock has his mind set on competing at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas in December. “We are going to try and get us a back number and hopefully have a shot for the world championship,” Hancock said.
