XTREME BULLS SAN ANGELO, TEXAS

Clayton Sellars adds San Angelo Xtreme Bulls title Bo Knows

BY BRADY RENCK, Special to ProRodeo Sports News W hen Clayton Sellars was growing up, his family called him Playbo. As he grew older, the nickname Bo stuck. Now, Bo knows victories. Lots of them. The 25-year-old is enjoying the best stretch of his career, ranking second in the PRCA | RAM World Standings. Hardly a week goes by without a terrific performance or a victory. He has six wins this season, his latest eye-opening effort coming at the San Angelo (Texas) Division 1 Xtreme Bulls. Sellars delivered 173 points on two head to secure the win at Foster Communications Coliseum. Every win matters, but this victory resonated because of the atmosphere. “It’s San Angelo, man. It’s awesome. The fans are very engaged. The bulls are bucking. It’s a dark coliseum, and they have fireworks,” said Sellars, who had an 88.5-point trip on Pete Carr Pro Rodeo’s Time Bomb, a bull he knows well, to secure the top prize. “It’s a lot of fun, a really high-caliber event.” For Sellars, this season has been two years in the making after his return to the PRCA. Lessons learned have placed him in a better position mentally and physically. “I have matured. And it just flows into every aspect of my life. And with the PRCA, it’s just home. It’s where my career started, and it’s where I wanted to be,” Sellars said. “My family is involved. And most of my friends are here. I’ve got to know people and build great relationships here.” The connections are interwoven. Sellars is married to saddle

bronc riding star Lefty Holman’s sister Billie. He is related to Dawson Hay. And his wife remains involved in the Western wear industry. “It’s very comfortable,” Sellars said. Given his age, Sellars’ resume is nothing to scoff at. He is a three-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier, earning consecutive berths from 2019-2021. He finished a career-best sixth in the world in 2021. His goals are admittedly higher after his rocket launch start to this season. “I think I am obviously seeing a lot of success right now. That’s because I have had some really, really big goals in front of me. I have been staring at them for a long time,” Sellars said. “They are becoming more and more clear as time passes by. The clarity in my life is making things easier.” To go on this type of run, it speaks to Sellars’ routine. It involves diet, workouts, and a sound mental approach. The way Sellars views bull riding helps explain his season as well. It makes everything seem possible. “You have to take every ride captive. Bull riding is a scary game. Guys lose when their mind slips. You have to try to win every mental battle, that’s the No. 1 thing,” Sellars said. “And I just really like bull riding. The meaning of the sport is straightforward. You don’t have to dig deep. It’s you vs. an animal that wants to kill you or at least throw you off. “And if you can stay on, you can get everything you want for yourself and for your family. All you have to do is stay on for those eight seconds, to show you are good enough and tough enough. There’s nothing like it.”
