FARM-CITY PRORODEO HERMISTON, ORE.

Familiar Place BY JOLEE JORDAN, Special to ProRodeo Sports News C layton Biglow loves the Farm-City Pro Rodeo in Hermiston, Ore. The last time he competed there in August 2019, the California bareback rider won the rodeo with an arena-record tying performance. That win helped propel him toward his first PRCAWorld Championship won that December at the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. After the Farm-City Pro Rodeo was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Biglow and his fellow competitors were excited to return to eastern Oregon for the ProRodeo Tour stop in 2021. It was like Groundhog Day for Biglow after he conquered Calgary Stampede’s Xplosive Skies for 92 points, shattering the previous arena record by three points en route to the championship and $6,239. The win helped him climb to third in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings and fourth in the ProRodeo Tour standings. “I tied the record in 2019, so it was cool to beat it on the next horse I got on there,” Biglow said. “Hermiston is a great rodeo, they bring in (stock contractors) Calgary, Korkow, Corey & Lange, and Bridwell, so you know you’re bound to get on a good one.” Biglow had some history with Xplosive Skies; he rodeo the Calgary bucker in Ellensburg, also in 2019, but with much less success. “The flank actually wrapped around my arm and things just did not go the way I wanted,” he chuckled. “This time around was much better.” Xplosive Skies is building a reputation in 2021 for delivering strong performances, including a 93.5-point ride by TimO’Connell to win the Calgary Stampede. “That horse is the next Virgil,” Biglow said, referring to the former Pendleton Whisky “Let ’er Buck” Bareback Horse of the Year aboard whom Biglow set a record at the NFR in 2018. “She’s outstanding.” Biglow was looking forward to the rubber match with Xplosive Skies; he had the horse drawn at the Canby Rodeo on Aug. 20, less than a week after the explosive matchup in Hermiston. “I screwed her up a bit the first couple of jumps, so maybe if I get her started right next time,” he said when asked about upping his score even more. The record in Hermiston was the cherry on top of a fantastic weekend of rodeoing. Biglow entered three rodeos and won all three. Add in the win at the Mountain Valley Stampede in Heber City, Utah, the weekend prior and Biglow banked $15,616 for his 32 seconds of work. “It was a fun weekend of rodeoing,” he said. “I drew some good horses and rode well.” Along with the Hermiston victory, he also bested the fields in Logan, Utah, and Oakdale, Calif. “Oakdale hasn’t treated me well in the past, I think the best I’d done was maybe a last-place check,” Biglow said. “I consider it my hometown rodeo since it’s the closest to my house (in Clements, about 40 miles away). “It was nice to do well there.” Despite wrapping his weekend on Sunday afternoon less than an hour from home, Biglow didn’t get the chance to spend the night in his own bed. “We freakin’ had to get in the truck and drive all night to Caldwell (Idaho),” he laughed. This time around, though, he was hustling to get to the slack to team rope with partner Wyatt Adams. “I’m kind of new to the whole deal, and we didn’t actually rope until around 2 p.m., so we could have probably slept a little, but I figured we needed to get there,” Biglow said.
