DAYS OF ’47 RODEO SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH

On a Roll Hanchey finding summer groove TOP SCORES TOP MONEY EARNER Shane Hanchey

BY TANNER BARTH S hane Hanchey, the 2013 PRCA World Champion Tie-Down Roper, has been there and done that. He’s a 16-year veteran of the sport with 13 trips to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. His trip to Las Vegas in 2022 is one he wants to put in the rear-view mirror. Hanchey reached the pay window just once at the Thomas & Mack Center, riding his new horse Bugsy for the first time. Hanchey admitted that stretch of rodeo was tough on him. His confidence wavered after those 10 nights, but some sound advice from his wife Taylor helped him and his mount flip the script this summer. “I was in such a bad spot last December mentally and confidence wise,” said Hanchey, who sits fifth in the PRCA | RAM World Standings in 2023. “I had just got my new horse (Bugsy) and I just wasn’t feeling it. “It’s not really fair that the first rodeo I rode him at was the National Finals. I was a bit down, but I listened to my wife, and she said, ‘just go rope, you have to get the timing down on him’. I couldn’t be more thankful because this summer has been awesome.” The duo was clicking on all cylinders in the month of July. One of their most successful stops was the Utah Days of ’47 Rodeo in Salt Lake City. Hanchey was Mr. Consistency, clocking four runs all under 8.5 seconds. His final out ending up being the most important and also worth $10,000. The Sulphur, La., cowboy clocked a 7.9-second run in the finals to take home the coveted Gold Medal. “Going seventh out of eight tells you exactly what you need to do,” he said. “The first couple of guys had tough luck and then Kincade (Henry) got it going with an 8.3. So, I knew if I could at least get in front of him, I would be able to place in the top 3 and that’s a really good payday regardless.” Hanchey was the top money earner at the PRCA Playoff Series stop, pocketing $18,202 for his efforts. His success in Salt Lake City didn’t come without a little frustration earlier in the day, after missing out on an opportunity just down the road in Spanish Fork, Utah. “I dropped the ball at Spanish Fork earlier that day on the best calf in the herd in the second go-round,” Hanchey said. “I ended up breaking the barrier. So, that was on my mind all day. Do not break the barrier, whatever you do, don’t break the barrier. “This is such a mental game. If you don’t believe you’re the best, it’ll chew you up and spit you out. I knew I had to bounce back after Spanish Fork and this set of calves will give anybody confidence.”
