Bull rider Carter, saddle bronc rider Boore claim wins Xtreme Rapid City
BY DAGIN RENCK Special to the ProRodeo Sports News R iker Carter never lost his love for rodeo but the intense pain in his back last July left him contemplating his future in the sport. Could he still compete at a high level? Carter’s wide smile Jan. 28, told the story of his improved health and optimism for the 2022 season. The Stone, Idaho, cowboy made a surprising splash in his lone ride at the Rodeo Rapid City Xtreme Bulls, riding Sutton Rodeos’ Rock N Roll Fantasy for an 87-point score. Carter knew the matchup was going to require him to bring his best. “I saw my draw earlier this week and looked him up and saw Trey (Benton III) rode him at the (NFR),” Carter said. “I watched the video, and I knew he was going to be a pretty good one, so I thought I better come ready.”

him the confidence to reach the one goal he’s yet to achieve in his career. “I haven’t ridden out of those yellow bucking chutes yet,” Carter said. “I’ve been pretty close to making the (NFR) a few times but I’ve gotten hurt or something stupid has happened right there at the end.”
The film study paid dividends. The bull broke out of the chutes hard to the right and began a series of five rotations. Carter stayed in rhythm with the bull, never appearing in trouble, as the crowd roared him to the finish. After matching Rock N Roll Fantasy jump-for- jump, Carter claimed the $4,004 first-place check. The ride marked his first since last July after Carter was forced to take time off because of an injury. The pain stemmed from an August 2020 back surgery after the bull rider damaged his L5 vertebrae. As a result, Carter lost many of his qualifications from the time off. He was hoping to use the 2022 season to gain them back. Instead, the win may have changed his mindset. “My goal this year was just to go and get some qualifications picked back up and then next year hit it hard but heck I already won this,” Carter said. “They might start letting me in the big ones. I might have to start rodeoing.” Based on his performance, Carter can certainly reframe his expectations. He looked strong riding one of the better bulls. It was just one night but it may give
BOORE’S 89-POINT RIDE GIVES HIM TOP HONORS
Allen Boore boasts a solid resume. He has
competed in the sport’s biggest events.
But even Boore, a two-time NFR qualifier, is not immune from butterflies fluttering in his stomach after spending some time away from rodeo. “I’ve been hurt for a couple of months so I hadn’t been on very many (horses) this year,” said Boore. “I was pretty nervous climbing over the chute.” Instincts quickly replaced nerves Jan. 29 inside The Monument arena. The Axtell, Utah, cowboy ripped off an 89-point ride on Burch Rodeo’s Lunatic FromHell, claiming the Rodeo Rapid City Xtreme Broncs’ $4,004 first-place prize. His matchup, Lunatic FromHell, is considered one of the sport’s best horses. For Boore, it represented
