Cole Elshere goes for 90-point ride Sweet Onion BY MATT NABER S addle bronc rider Cole Elshere failed to win any money at the 2020Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. He was bucked off all but one of his broncs and went home with nothing but a sore right (riding) arm and a chip on his shoulder. Now he’s off to a strong start in the new season, winning the Rodeo Rapid City (S.D.) PRCA Xtreme Broncs Match with a 90-point ride on Korkow Rodeo’s Onion Ring, Jan. 30. “Rodeo is a humbling sport but it’s amazing to be a part of it,” Elshere said. “It was really important for the new season to get a good start and even more important because I had a rough Finals. I was at home doing therapy on my shoulder, so to make a great ride is going to help my confidence going forward.” Competition was stiff at the X Broncs where a minimum of 86 points was needed to stay in the money. “It’s just a big blessing,” said Elshere, 31. “I The South Dakota cowboy knew he was in for a good ride when he drewOnion Ring, having won the third round of Bracket 5 at the Super Series Finish in Fort Worth, Texas, in May. “Onion Ring is one of the best horses going down the road, and I was tickled to see my name next to hers,” Elshere said. “She bucked harder and was a lot stronger this time. She got out and was after it right off the bat.” Elshere knows what it takes to have a successful season, having qualified for the NFR four times (2012-14, 2020). He’s also won multiple rodeos in Rapid City, starting with the Range Days Rodeo his rookie year in 2010 and adding wins in 2012 and 2013. He also won Rodeo Rapid City’s bull riding in 2018. Elshere’s Xtreme Broncs win was worth a $4,145 boost in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings and gave his confidence a boost, too. “Building off this is going to be super important this year when there’s less to go to to get that momentum and get confident,” Elshere said. was just so thankful to make 90.”
