BY MATT NABER R ookie bull rider Riley Harris nearly made a rookie mistake by leaving before he was done competing at the Stockyards Shootout. Traveling alone to the Shootout, a San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo qualifier held in Fort Worth, Texas, Jan. 21-24, nearly proved disastrous. “There’s so much I don’t know about entering, I didn’t even know

there was a Sunday shootout round,” Harris laughed. “I rode my bull and drove home to Coleman (160 miles southwest of Fort Worth) and my buddy (Colton Kelly) texted me, ‘Good luck tomorrow.’ I said, ‘Where am I going?’ He told me about the shootout round, and if he wouldn’t have told me about that I would have missed it.” The top four finishers from the qualifier advanced to San Antonio. Harris returned to Fort Worth and placed third in the finals to qualify for San Antonio, where he’ll compete alongside his older cousin and four- time World Champion Bull Rider J.W. Harris (2008-10, 2013).
