Tonozzi and Mattern win Greeley Stampede
BY MATT NABER C hemistry is everything in team roping, and combining Garrett Tonozzi and Joe Mattern resulted in a $5,179 win at the Greeley (Colo.) Stampede, July 3. “It’s a huge boost to win a rodeo of this caliber and helps get us down the road,” said Tonozzi, 33. “We had some (Wrangler) Tour points coming and it’ll help. We will go to all the big ones this month and hopefully win more like this one.” Although they didn’t place in the first two rounds, they qualified for the
final round, ranking 10th in the average. “Man, we were coming back in 10th, and the short round was tight and there was a second between first (place) and us,” Tonozzi said. “Everyone roped so good here, and the cut was 12.4 (seconds). Everyone had a chance in the short round, and it came down to a one-header.” The duo’s final draw had been part of a 6.4-second run in the second round, so they knew what they were in for. “We watched the video and knew he would go left, so I had to make sure there was no dead spot in the run,” said Mattern, 30. The duo’s aggressive approach for the final round paid off royally. By
