Tonozzi, who joined the PRCA in 2004, is no stranger to PRCA success, having qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in 2006 and 2008. In Colorado alone, he’s won 20 PRCA competitions, including the Colorado State Fair and Rodeo in Pueblo (2013) and the Pikes Peak or Bust rodeo in Colorado Springs (2008). But he’d never won in Greeley. Tonozzi has finished as high as fifth in the world standings, with $131,991 in 2008. “It means the world to me,” Tonozzi said. “Being fromColorado, I always wanted to win it (Greeley) since I was a kid – I’ve competed here since I was 13.” As for Mattern, a native of the Lone Star State, Greeley is the biggest win of his PRCA career since joining in 2014. Mattern has ranked as high as 64th in the world standings with $16,814 in 2014. “This is one of the biggest wins I’ve had in the PRCA, and it’s real special to me,” Mattern said. “I was here (at Greeley) in 2014. It really went my way this time.” Mattern already is looking ahead with plans of qualifying for bigger rodeos next year. After Greeley, Tonozzi and Mattern hit the road for Red Lodge, Mont., Cody, Wyo., and Livingston, Mont. Overall, their Cowboy Christmas efforts were worth $7,468. “This is the first time for me doing it like this, and I can’t think of anything else I would rather be doing,” Mattern said. “Going to this many rodeos in a short time, that’s what we rope and practice for day in and day out, it’s for weeks like this.”

As of July 12, Tonozzi was 41st with $20,759 and Mattern was still outside the Top 50. Winning Greeley also placed the duo 10th in the Wrangler ProRodeo Tour Standings. “It means a lot, it’s a great push over Cowboy Christmas,” Tonozzi said. “It’s a hard week or a fun week, and this rodeo made it a really fun week for us.” Mattern echoed his partner’s sentiment.
