Tanner Butner shines in saddle bronc Record Ride BY JOLEE JORDAN, Special to ProRodeo Sports News A quick peek at the Google results for Daniel, Wyo., show that the town is home to less than 200 people and that it was the site of the first Holy Mass given in the state back in 1840. But if the final 10 weeks of the 2022 ProRodeo season continue as the last few have, the tiny town just southeast of Jackson Hole may have another claim to fame as the home of a Wrangler National Finals Rodeo saddle bronc rider. SHERIDAN WYO RODEO SHERIDAN, WYO.

Tanner Butner took another step toward that ultimate goal with a win at the SheridanWYO Rodeo in his home state on July 16, after posting a 92.5-point ride on Sankey ProRodeo & PhenomGenetics’ Black Tie. “It was a blast,” Butner, 25, said of the ride, which broke the arena record which had been held by Bradley Harter who twice (2004-2005) posted 91 points at the event. “That sucker feels like a little bomb going off under you. “There’s a lot of stuff going on when you’re on that horse,” he added. Black Tie is a veteran with multiple Wrangler NFR trips in both the bareback and saddle bronc riding. In his first outs since the 2021Wrangler NFR, Black Tie also took Layton Green to the pay window; Green marked 90.5 on the horse to win second behind Butner. Butner wasn’t sure how big the score was going to be once he finished the eight-seconds of work. “I was thinking it was probably 90 but I never expected 92,” he laughed. Not only was it a record for the rodeo, but it was also Butner’s first time to reach the milestone in his four ProRodeo seasons. “It was my first time to break 90 . . . I was pretty pumped up about it.” Interestingly, the match-up on the final night of the SheridanWYO, a stop on the lucrative NFR Playoff Series presented by PendletonWhisky, was not Butner’s first run-in with Black Tie. “I got to talking toWade (Sankey) and we think I probably got on him in Riverton at the college there when he was a colt,” Butner said. Sankey often took his colts to the college rodeo team at Central Wyoming College for teammembers to use for practice. Butner was not a student then but still took advantage of the opportunity to tune up his riding. “My brother and cousin were going to school there. I was still in high school,” Butner admitted. The Sheridan win was all part of a hot streak for Butner, who collected $5,640 in Sheridan to move to 21st in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings. The Playoff Series points earned helped himmove all the way to sixth in those standings. “We definitely want to get to enough to get qualified for that deal,” Butner said of the $1 million NFR Playoff set to happen in Puyallup, Wash., in early September. In addition to Sheridan, Butner has picked up wins in Pecos, Texas, and Prescott, Ariz. in the last month. “It’s been good the last few weeks,” he said. Traveling with top level bronc riders, Sage Newman, Chase Brooks, and Kolby Wanchuk the last couple of seasons has helped Butner elevate his riding. “I’ve been going the last three years but now I’m finally getting something done,” he noted. Butner finished 28th in 2020 and 24th in 2021. So far this season, he’s earned more than $53,000, surpassing his totals for each of the past two seasons.
