Livingston wins tie-down roping at Casper rodeo Fast Lane TOP SCORES
TOP MONEY WINNER Lane Livingston
BY BRADY RENCK, Special to ProRodeo Sports News A ll this time Lane Livingston was thinking about it wrong. He knew he wanted to be in rodeo, riding horses, competing in tie-down roping. But the sport is so much more than the time on the clock. “Man, you get to travel around everywhere. You get to see the country. And honestly, it’s the camaraderie, doing it with friends,” Livingston said. “It’s the people you meet, the places you go, and the friendships you make along the way. There are so many memories you create.” Last week, Livingston etched a week into his brain with an eye opening performance at the Central Wyoming Fair & PRCA Rodeo. Livingston relishes competing in Casper, Wyo. He showed well a year ago, and built on that momentum this season, winning the average in 18.4 seconds, netting $11,775 at the NFR Playoff Series presented by PendletonWhisky rodeo. It started with a stout 8.8 second run. “As far as being in Casper before, it gave me confidence. I kind of had an idea in the back of my mind what I needed to do, and it felt good,” Livingston, 27, said. “I had a calf that that didn’t have the best track record. But the timing worked out great. And the horse was really good.” That would be Rudy Rock, a horse that has accompanied him for the better part of a decade, is on injured reserve. Rudy, as he’s he trained to do, stepped in seamlessly. The chemistry showed in the final run of 9.6 seconds to secure the title. “I knew that calf had been tied at 9.0 and 9.9. Not many calves had been qualified on twice,” said Livingston, who hails from Seymour, Texas. “So, watching the short round unfold, I knew if I could go out and tie him a little faster, I would be in good shape.” Livingston continues to gain traction in the sport. He won the all around at the Mesquite (Texas) Championship Rodeo and recorded a victory in Tucson, Ariz., at La Fiesta De Los Vaqueros event. He allows the NFR to at least pop into his head. “It’s one of those things that when you start every year, that’s the goal,” Livingston said. “But I am just having fun roping. I get to go to places like Casper, where I am so comfortable, and you get that kind of money to rope, it’s special. Right now, I am just focusing on what’s next, not looking at the end picture.” A career in rodeo began developing during Livingston’s final year at Tarleton State in Stephenville, Texas. He had never focused on it, then a chance to work with eight-time NFR qualifier Marty Yates and veteran cowboy Richard Newton surfaced “When you get an opportunity to work with guys like that, guys who win like that, you have to do it,” Livingston said. “I knew in the back of my mind that it’s something I wanted to do for a long time. Rodeoing was something I was attracted to, and I realized I wanted to put in the time to do it.” The commitment is starting to pay off. Casper showed Livingston’s potential, leaving him looking out the windshield with a smile. “I love to rope,” Livingston said. “And I just love everything that goes into the lifestyle, the memories, the stories. It’s the best.”
