XTREME BULLS SALINAS, CALIF.
Frost continues gold buckle quest with Salinas win Mr. Clutch
BY BRADY RENCK, Special to ProRodeo Sports News B ull rider Josh Frost knows all about champions. He grew up in Utah as a Pittsburgh Steelers fan. “Well, actually, it was my dad (Shane) who was the huge fan. Union High School had colors that were black and gold, so it was like the Steelers. So, he latched onto them in the 1970s and 80s. That’s all I knew,” Frost said with a laugh. “That’s when they had Terry Bradshaw and the Steel Curtain. As long as I can remember, that’s been my team.” Soon, Frost wants to own his own version of a Super Bowl ring – the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo’s gold buckle. He came tantalizing close last season, turning oven mitts-required hot as he finished in second place after failing to post a score in 2019 at the NFR. The success became nitromethane for this season, fueling a breathtaking run of excellence. Frost has won double figure events, including the California Rodeo Salinas Big Week of Bull Riding. He scored 167 points on two head, shining in the spotlight in a unique environment. This was the inaugural PRCA Division 1 Xtreme Bulls event in Salinas. “It was cool. They had us right up there on the racetrack in front of the crowd,” said Frost, who netted $10,959 in prize money. “It was super exciting.” Frost never takes strong performances for granted. He rolled up his sleeves for 10 years to put himself in this position, to put his name in the conversation among the top riders. Now, there is nuance in his focus as he pursues his goal down the asphalt from arena to arena. “You look at the top guys in the sport, like StetsonWright and Sage Kimzey. I watched what they have done, and you see where they show the most growth and it’s how to control the mind. You must have mental fortitude to succeed. I have talked to coaches, done a little bit of everything,” Frost said. “The key is the ability to do well day in and day out, finding that consistency. It’s not about putting up 90-point scores. It’s about the riding every bull. And that’s a battle every day.” Frost loves to read, enjoys a round of bowling. But his mind never wanders from the head nod in the chute. It’s a beautiful blend of his passion and purpose. “I do feel like God put me on this earth to do one thing and that’s ride bulls. I don’t know what else it would be to do something this crazy,” Frost said. “The money aside, it’s amazing to get to do this and compete in a sport that’s so hard, that offers very little for you to control.” Like most great athletes, Frost, 27, embraces the process. He enjoys the 12-hour rides, “and getting out of the truck with your legs aching and working for eight seconds.” He also has a sense of humor, not bashful of quoting lines from his favorite movie “Step Brothers.” But those laughs belie his burning focus. Frost is chasing down a dream. “I have a strong reason to keep doing it every day – that gold buckle at the NFR,” Frost said. “There’s been 10 years of hard work to get to this point. It’s been a strong year, and I have built up some good momentum. But it’s a long season. And there’s one goal in mind.”
