The Arizona team ropers rope fast and they’re climbing the standings fast too. It all began back in February when the pair won the Rodeo 10.3 that was shared by four teams. The only problem with the big win that banked the team $8,003 is no one got the video of the first-round run, a blistering 3.4-second effort that also broke the arena record and was just one-tenth off the world record.

“We heard the steers were kind of setting up and the barrier was shorter,” Gaona said. “We just wanted to go as fast as we could.” “My partner got it on him tight and everything was moving fast,” Nowlin said. Both ropers were surprised at the time. “I didn’t think of anything, but when we dallied up, I saw how close we were to the roping box,” Gaona said. “I was shocked when they said it was 3.4,” Nowlin said. “And of course, no one got the video.”

Rapid City (S.D.). It was Gaona’s first ProRodeo competition on his permit and his last as he bought his card following the $6,255 win on the ProRodeo Tour. The team rolled back into the ProRodeo Tour winner’s circle at the Central Wyoming Fair & Rodeo in Casper, Wyo., on July 17, this time in record fashion.
