IN THEIR WORDS J.D. M C CUISTION Pikes Peak climb has tie-down roper in NFR hunt T hat run (at Pikes Peak) felt awesome. It’s been a slow couple of weeks. At Reno (Rodeo) and Pecos (West of the Pecos J.D. McCuistion is in the thick of the hunt for the 2021
bring each other back down to earth. He’s ready for the next one whether we won or lost the day before, like nothing has ever happened. We have good conversations. In 2019, I did get to go to virtually every rodeo I wanted to, close to 80. That was the first year I went to that many. It’s really exciting this season. I’ve worked virtually my whole life since I was a kid to be in this situation. I keep telling myself I have to keep moving up, keep winning. I try not to look at the standings. I feel like we have enough to focus on – entering, logistics, how to get from rodeo to rodeo – to not worry about the standings at this point in the year. There are still a lot of rodeos left and money to be won. If I’m not rodeoing, back home my dad has a concrete business (Marty McCuistion Concrete). When we’re not out on the road rodeoing, we have a job back home, and that’s to help the family business and keep it running. My brother and I are hanging out in Salt Lake for a few days then going to Spanish Fork (Fiesta Days Rodeo) and Nampa (Snake River Stampede). My parents came up for vacation. It’s been a while since they’ve come to the rodeos here, so they’re here to watch me and my brother at the rodeo. We’re also going to play golf.
Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and the ProRodeo Tour Finale. The tie-down roper from Collinsville, Texas, took a big leap in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings after tying his calf in 9.4 seconds in the finals of the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo in Colorado Springs, Colo. That time landed McCuistion $12,500 and 750 Tour points. He earned another $2,594 for his first-place time in the second round in Colorado Springs. As of July 20, McCuistion was in the top 20 in the world standings and 14th in the Tour. The 29-year-old is having his best season. In 2019, he finished a career-best 40th with $39,311. He’s already topped that total in 2021.
Rodeo), I hadn’t won a whole lot. I got a small check at Belle Fourche over the Fourth of July. When I threw my hands up at the finals it was a relief.
It was like, man, that felt really good, I’m going
to get paid quite a bit for this one.
It felt like everything went step to step to step, flowed really well. I knew I was fast enough. Pikes Peak or Bust is the biggest rodeo I’ve won in my career. It kind of gives me a highlight reel knowing that in times where I don’t feel like things are going well, I can look back on that run and realized that, yes, I’m good enough, and yes, I can win big rodeos. I feel like I’ve matured a little bit in my roping. We (McCuistion and his brother, Chris) have two really good horses (Marshall, 11, Wiz, 15). Now I’m choosing the right horse at the right rodeos, and in past seasons maybe I didn’t do that. But also, another year or two of age and I feel more comfortable in myself like in the situation the other night. I’ve got a little more confidence, I guess. Traveling with my brother makes it easy. In times where things aren’t going well, he can pick me up or vice versa. We can keep each other going and

COWBOY GRILLE WITH TANNER BARTH
How did you get your start in rodeo? Cole: I’ve always been around rodeoing my whole life. My family has a pretty big cattle operation, we order, buy and turn out cattle. So, it’s been something I’ve been around since I can remember. When did you know you could make a career out of rodeo? Rookie cowboy Cole Curry, 20, is in his second year of ProRodeo and is starting to take the sport by storm. Earlier this season, Curry, who was on his permit in 2020, won the RAM Southeastern Circuit Finals Rodeo to qualify for his first RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo. The St. Francisville, La., cowboy has been on a roll ever since. The team roping heeler leads the PRCA | Resistol Rookie Standings with $17,972, which is also good enough for 31st in the PRCA | RAM World Standings.
COLE CURRY
Cole: I’ve always roped since I was a little kid and my dad roped. He made me do things correctly at a young age. That kind of helped me see my potential in the sport. I think around age 13 is when I noticed if I worked at it, I could go as far as I wanted to if I dedicated myself to the sport. What do you like the most about rodeo? Cole: The competition is something I love about the sport. There’s a lot that goes into it, your draw has to go right and you have to rope good. Why did you decide team roping would be your event? Cole: If you team rope, you have more options to make money and have a chance to get your name out there. What made you want to be a heeler? Cole: I did both heeling and heading at a young age, and there came a time where if I was going to be better at one, I had to pick one to focus on. I just liked heeling, I had good heel horses. Why did you decide to get your PRCA permit right out of high school? Cole: I’ve always wanted to get my foot in the door in the sport of ProRodeo. So, I waited until I was 18 to buy my permit. I did it and then just roped around and got some good partners. I figured I might as well try it out and see where it goes. Who is someone you look up to in the rodeo business right now? Cole: I like to look at all the guys that have been there and done that. I look at what they did and have done to be successful. I’ve watched a lot of Jade Corkill, Paul Eaves and Joseph Harrison. Those guys are known to be the best, so I study all of them. What’s this season been like for you?
Cole: It’s been a good rookie year, I had a pretty good winter, but I probably should’ve won more. This summer we have put together some good runs, just trying to wait on a good jump and pick up that one big signature win. What your favorite TV show? Cole: I’m watching “White Collar” right now, and it’s been pretty good, plus you can never go wrong with watching “Talladega Nights” again. What’s your favorite candy? Cole: Sour watermelon candies are definitely my favorite. What’s your go-to meal before or after a rodeo? Cole: Fried shrimp is probably my favorite, and the go-to meal for me. Pappadeaux’s in Fort Worth, Texas, is probably the best place to get it. What’s the first vehicle you drove? Cole: I drove a 2012 model, two-tone silver pickup. What do you do when you’re not rodeoing?
Cole: When I’m not rodeoing, I spend quite a bit of my time hunting. One of my favorite kinds of hunting is thermal hunting, we go out and hunt hogs quite a bit. What’s your favorite holiday? Cole: Christmas is probably my favorite holiday. I love the colder months because we can go to a ton of indoor rodeos and make a little money, as well. What was your favorite cartoon growing up? Cole: I’d have to go with “Scooby-Doo,” I used to watch it a ton just like every other kid growing up.

SHORT ROUND Wrangler NFR payout increases to 13.3 million in 2021 More Money
T he ProRodeo Cowboys Association®’s 2021 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo® will see an increase in the payout at the world’s largest rodeo in December. The Wrangler NFR, which returns to Las Vegas Dec. 2-11, will have a record-setting competition payout of $10,257,048. This amount includes guaranteed prize money of $1.2 million for all NFR qualifiers and $9,057,048 in competition prize money. Between 2015 and 2020, the NFR paid out a total of $10 million – $8.8 million in competition prize money and $1.2 million in guaranteed prize money to qualifiers. The increase will see round winners take
home $26,997 per round and average winners earn $69,234. Each go-round will pay a total of $87,087, while the average total will pay $261,261 per event. The stock contractor pay – which is 30% of the contestant payout – is increased to $3,077,114. After taking place at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, in 2020, the Wrangler NFR will be back at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas this year.
Known as the richest and most prestigious rodeo in the world, the Wrangler NFR attracts the top 15 contestants in bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, barrel racing and bull riding to compete for a share of the increased purse and the coveted PRCA Gold Buckle.

ended with bull riding, where every contestant fell to the dirt before hearing the eight-second buzzer except John Crimber. Crimber’s 90.5 point ride skyrocketed him to a $10,000 check before a raucous crowd. Bradlee Miller and Gavin French split the bareback riding title with a pair of 79-point rides. In saddle bronc riding, Garrett Cunningham netted the top spot with an 80-point ride. Cunningham was the last spot making it into the finals, and then claimed the world title. The most dominant athlete of the competition was barrel racer Devin Young, atop her horse Tequila. Young and Tequila won every round, taking home more than $14,000. In the finals, a 13.57-second run took the prize.

Taking home the title, Conner said the winnings will end up going into more rodeos in the future. Tie-down hot hand Riley Webb proved worthy of his exemption spot, taking the top prize on two runs. He, along with other champions of age, received their PRCA permit certificates, meaning Webb will begin competing with ProRodeo contestants next month, upon his 18th birthday. Team ropers Chase Webster and Zachery Lewis, who started the day as the fourth seed, connected well and took the title in 4.7 seconds.
