EDITOR’S LETTER TRACY RENCK

A parachutist drops in the arena as part of the Folsom (Calif.) Pro Rodeo grand entry. The rodeo took place from July 1-3 and was part of the lucrative Cowboy Christmas run. Crystal Amen photo

Contestants enjoy record-setting Cowboy Christmas run

T here was no sightings of Santa Claus or Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen or the most famous reindeer of all – Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. However, from June 29 through July 5 it was definitely Christmas in the PRCA. In that time, contestants competed in 35 rodeos in 17 states and two provinces in Canada. The big winner this year was top earner tie-down roper Ty Harris, who earned a Cowboy Christmas record $40,561. When contacted and told by the ProRodeo Sports News that he set the Cowboy Christmas run record for earnings Harris was taken back, but also estatic. Who could blame him. The San Angelo, Texas, native broke the previous Cowboy Christmas record earnings mark of $39,993 by Trevor Brazile, the King of Cowboys, in 2011. On the roughstock side, Sage Newman was the top earner, taking home $36,010. “I’m blessed with this life I live and to be able to go down the road with my buddies,” said Newman, 25. “I drew great horses all week and that’s part of it. I drew wonderful horses that helped me get to the top.” There’s no question Cowboy Christmas can be a rush

The performances by Harris and Newman essentially sealed their trips to the 2023 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in December in Las Vegas. Harris and Newman weren’t alone in cashing in there 22 cowboys – 13 timed-event competitors and nine roughstock riders – who earned at least $20,000 during Cowboy Christmas. That number – 22 – is amazing for couple of reasons. There was a time not long ago when a cowboy earned $20,000 during Cowboy Christmas that was a hefty haul. If 2023 is any indication $20,000 will be an expected amount to earn during the frantic run. Secondly, applaud all the rodeos and rodeo committees who are part of Cowboy Christmas and are offering high dollar earnings for competitors. Cash like was seen in 2023 during Cowboy Christmas is a win-win for everybody. When large amounts of cash are available it will attract the top cowboys in the PRCA. When they show up fans win because spectators get to see the PRCA’s best cowboys and then rodeos/rodeo committees win because tickets sell out, which puts money back into local communities. Honestly, watching a rodeo on the Fourth of July is a perfect fit. The sport is slice of Americana and why not celebrate it on the nation’s birthday like thousands of fans just did. Luckily for fans of the sport – the PRCA has a calendar

for contestants. They mapped out strategies to hit as many rodeos as possible during the 35-rodeo run. As soon as one rodeo ended, they would jump back in the rig and head for the next rodeo with few minutes to spare. The excitement is obvious and becomes euphoric when all the hustle pays off with a huge payday.

Change in Plans

“I didn’t enter as much on the Fourth, a lot like last year. I feel like I’ve burnt myself out in the past on the Fourth of July. Now, where I’m at in my career, I’m trying to take my family as much as I can. So, I wanted to rodeo smart

Bareback rider Kaycee Feild has learned many lessons in his 17-year ProRodeo career. One ties directly to the Cowboy Christmas run over the Fourth of July. The past

few years, Feild has lessened his load during that time to be equally as fresh for the middle and end of July. This season he competed in just four rodeos over that stretch.

COWBOY GRILLE WITH TANNER BARTH

How’d you get your start in rodeo? Darcy: I grew up in Australia with my parents rodeoing a bit. I roped and rodeoed over there for most my life. I had always planned on coming over here (to the United States) once I was old enough and could make a career out of it. When did you know you could make a career out of rodeo? Darcy: I think from a really young age I had always planned on rodeoing professionally. In 2019, in Australia I was in the Pro Rodeo Association over there and won quite a bit. I think after that I was ready to venture out and try to make a start in the USA. Why did you decide steer wrestling would be your event? Darcy: It’s just always been the event that I’ve enjoyed the most throughout my life. It probably doesn’t hurt that it’s my strongest event as well. Did you do any other rodeo events growing up? Darcy Kersh, 24, started his ProRodeo career later than most. The Charters Towers, Australia, steer wrestler didn’t arrive in the U.S. to chase his dream of rodeo until 2021. Two years later, he’s making a name for himself. As of June 30, Kersh is third in the Resistol Rookie of the Year race with $12,810. His fastest run this season came at the Greeley (Colo.) Stampede, where he clocked a 3.7-second run worth more than $3,100.

DARCY KERSH

Darcy: I team roped a lot and roped calves as well. I rode saddle bronc horses quite a bit when I was in Australia too. There are not nearly as many rodeos over there, so it’s easier to work a lot of events. What’s one rodeo you want to win in your career? Darcy: There are so many that I’d love to win. I think Cheyenne (Wyo.) would probably be at the top of the list for me. I think that’s an old school cowboy kind of rodeo. I like the setups where you have to be a good horseman to win. Why did you decide to get your PRCA card this season? Darcy: My main goal is to make the NFR, so I wanted to try that as soon as I filled my permit at the end of last year. So, I decided to buy it and give it a go. Who’s someone you look up to in the rodeo business right now? Darcy: I look up to Tyler Waguespack for sure. Just because he bulldogs so great, and he has helped me quite a bit as well with bettering myself. I look up to Tristan Martin as well, those guys do things the way I want to do things. What’s your favorite sports team? Darcy: I don’t really follow many sports in America yet. I used to watch football back in Australia, but it’s definitely different here that’s for sure. I’m still trying to get the hang of the different sports in the U.S. What’s your go-to restaurant before or after a rodeo? Darcy: I like going to the Outback Steakhouse, it kind of reminds me of home honestly. I’m a fan of Texas Roadhouse as well. You can’t go wrong with a good steakhouse. What’s your favorite candy? Darcy: I like the Reese’s Cups quite a bit. I think I lived on them for about the first three weeks that I lived over here. What’s the first vehicle you drove? Darcy: It was a Mitsubishi Triton. I actually won the truck at a roping over in Australia. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not rodeoing? Darcy: Mainly when I’m not rodeoing, I like to practice when I can. I also like to train roping horses when I’m home. I do that for work and pleasure. What’s your favorite holiday? Darcy: My favorite holiday would probably have to be Christmas, it’s a pretty good time of the year. We normally go to Arizona and rope. Down there we get to hang out with friends and family. What type of music do you like listening to? Darcy: My playlist is pretty assorted, there’s a little bit of everything on there. I like country music the most probably.

TIMED-EVENT TOP MONEY WINNER

BY TANNER BARTH T he Cowboy Christmas rodeo run can be grueling. In most cases, it requires contestants traveling up and down the road for seven days straight with the hope of striking paydirt during one of the most important stretches of rodeo that sport has to offer. Trevor Brazile, The King of Cowboys, made a killing in his career during the Fourth of July. In 2011, Brazile set the record for the most money ever won during Cowboy Christmas with $39,993 between tie-down and team roping. That record seemed like it would stand the test of time, well until 2023. San Angelo, Texas, tie-down roper Ty Harris had never won more than $7,500 in a single year during Cowboy Christmas in his seven-year ProRodeo career. He flipped that script on its head in 2023. Harris cashed checks at six of the eight rodeos he competed in, to not only break the timed-event and single-event records, but also the Cowboy Christmas overall earnings record with $40,561 earned from June 29-July 5. “I broke the all-time record for any event?” Harris cautiously asked when told he had broken Brazile’s record. “I knew I had it for tie-down roping and the timed events, but not the all-time record. The crazy part is I’ve never had a good Fourth of July before.” Harris’ Cowboy Christmas run started off with a bang at the Greeley (Colo.) Stampede on June 29. His three runs in the Centennial State turned into a $8,448 payday. That was only the beginning of what would turn into a lucrative rodeo run, highlighted by Harris winning the Ponoka Stampede and pocketing $18,155 at the event alone. “Every year you have high hopes and dreams of having a good Cowboy Christmas,” said Harris, 25. “You make all these intricate travel plans to make every rodeo and you book flights here and there. So, to see it all finally come to fruition with a week like this is really special.” His Cowboy Christmas success marks a turnaround this season because the high-speed talent found himself a little chilly in early June. “I was struggling a little bit and didn’t really Harris breaks Cowboy Christmas money mark Record Breaker

have any success,” he said. “That’s definitely a personal weakness of mine – trying to push too hard when it’s not going right, instead of just doing my job and roping. I want to win every time I back in there, but when I haven’t been winning is when it will actually get worse for me because then I start pushing and pressing and making mistakes that I shouldn’t make.” The financial boost moved the Texan near the top 5 of the PRCA | RAM World Standings, but there’s no slow in the Harris ‘go’ at this point in the season. “I’m just going to go and just try to do the best that I can,” Harris said. “I’m not going to stop until September 30. When you’re blessed with a week like this, I’m going to take it as a motivator and hopefully, an accelerator. I’m definitely not going to slow down.”

Ty Harris clocked a 9.0-second run in the Showdown round of the Ponoka Stampede to win the rodeo. His $18,155 payday was key in his record-setting Cowboy Christmas run. COWBOY CHRISTMAS
