ROUGHSTOCK TOP WINNER
Cashing In
BY PRCA STAFF T he Fourth of July is the busiest week of rodeo, and the lucky few come out with big wins. For Sage Newman, the current leader in the saddle bronc riding PRCA | RAM World Standings, the late nights and cross-country travel paid off. He had an 89-point ride aboard Frontier Rodeo’s Miss Ellie at the Cody Stampede on July 3 and the score held on for the win when the rodeo concluded on the Fourth of July. Newman then topped the leaderboard and wowed the crowd in Belle Fourche, S.D., at the Black Hills Roundup with a 90-point ride in the afternoon July 4 on Lunatic From Hell of Burch Rodeo. The standout cowboy then completed the hat trick by winning the Mandan (N.D.) Rodeo Days with an 87-point ride on Stace Smith Pro Rodeos’ Flashcard Champ late on July 4. “I had never been on that horse before,” Newman said of FlashCard Champ. “My traveling partner Chase (Brooks) was a pile of points on him, and I saw a lot of good scores on that horse. I knew he was going to be good, and I was excited to have him, and it worked out. “(Winning three rodeos) was great. I’m blessed with this life I live and to be able to go down the road with my buddies. “I drew great horses all week and that’s part of it. I drew wonderful horses that helped me get to the top.” Newman was the top roughstock winner in the Cowboy Christmas run from June 24 through July 5. He earned $36,010. The closest roughstock competitor was reigning PRCA Bull Riding World Champion Stetson Wright, who earned $27,884, while competing in bull riding and saddle bronc riding. Newman’s victory at the Black Hills Roundup wasn’t the first time that he teamed up with the former bucking horse of the year. “He’s kind of my old buddy, he’s going to give you a shot to win every time and is probably one of my favorite horses to get on,” Newman said after his first career win in Belle Fourche. “This year was the year I knew I had a good matchup and was super excited to be there.” Newman, 25, from Melstone, Mont., is chasing his third appearance at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and first gold buckle. He’s added major wins to his resume this year, including the New Year’s Eve Buck & Ball in Gilette, Wyo., and RodeoHouston. Over Cowboy Christmas, Newman competed in an average of two rodeos a day in a quest to increase his lead in the world standings, with no signs of slowing down. When asked about the crazy travel during the busiest time of the rodeo calendar, Newman had no complaints. “You can’t beat it. “You’re hustling with your buddies to make it to the next rodeo. You’re not sure if you’re going to do it, but you’re dang sure going to try!” Newman said. The hustle and try paid dividends for Newman – making it an unforgettable Cowboy Christmas for the cowboy.
