COWBOY GRILLE WITH TRACY RENCK

How’d you get your start in rodeo? Wyatt: Pretty much my whole family rodeoed for years – my grandpa, my dad, my mom. They all influenced me. More than anything, rodeo is just what I grew up doing. Why the late start to your PRCA career? Wyatt: I’m finishing up my master’s degree in science with an emphasis in agriculture at Texas A&M University- Commerce. I also got a bachelor’s degree from there and rodeoed there. I made the College National Finals Rodeo. This will be my third trip there, and this is the first year I’ll get to do team roping and tie-down roping there. I think I bought my PRCA permit four times, and I have done a lot of amateur rodeoing the last nine years. I wanted to amateur rodeo until I felt like my horses were good enough and I found a partner good enough and who wanted to go. Who are you roping with? Wyatt: I’m with Casey McCleskey. This year has been really good. I’ve been able to rope with a good partner. We haven’t won anything big at one time, but we have plucked along. We were able to go to San Antonio for the first time, and we’re going to get to go to Reno (Nev.), which I’m really looking forward to. What horses are you riding? Wyatt: I’m riding a black calf horse called Ears, 17, and a head horse named Kidd, 16. A big difference this year compared to when I rodeoed in the past is we would maybe rodeo for a week somewhere, but then we would go home. Now being gone for a month or two months and keeping the horses working well, feeling good and getting from one place to the other is a big difference. Do you have a favorite event between team roping and tie-down roping? Rookie Wyatt Muggli, 25, grew up in the sport of rodeo. His grandfather is Clyde Frost, a seven-time NFR qualifier. His mom, Robin, is the older sister of the late Hall of Famer Lane Frost. Wyatt’s father, Mark, also rode bulls and steer wrestled in the PRCA. Wyatt, who lives in Lane, Okla., bought his PRCA card in September. He’s leading the rookie team roping header standings and is second in tie-down roping.

Wyatt: Honestly, I couldn’t pick. I don’t really have one that I like over the other. I like being able to do two events. Normally if one is going slow the other is going well. What would it mean if you could win rookie of the year in your events? Wyatt: That would be great. Every kid grows up hearing about that, and that would be really cool. It’s a one-time deal, and there are a lot of guys

who have won a lot who still wear that buckle. I don’t go as fast as a lot of guys in my events. I just try and ride my horse good and catch them all every time. If I draw good, win something, and if I don’t draw good, I still want to catch them and keep my horses working good for the next one. What’s your favorite movie? Wyatt: I watch a bunch of different types of movies, and if I had to pick one, I would say “Braveheart.” What’s your go-to restaurant? Wyatt: There’s a little one there in Atoka (Okla.) called Cazadorez. I usually get the shrimp quesadilla. What’s your favorite dessert? Wyatt: Homemade chocolate chip cookies. What’s was the make of your first car? Wyatt: I had a choice between mom and dad helping me out buying a pickup or helping me out buying a

horse. I got a horse and I kept driving their cars. Who are the rodeo competitors you would pay to watch? Wyatt: I would enjoy getting to watch guys you grew up hearing about like Fred (Whitfield), Cody (Ohl) and Joe Beaver and then guys like Speed Williams and Rich Skelton and Jake Barnes and Clay O’Brien. What do you do when you’re not rodeoing? Wyatt: My family runs cattle, and if I’m not roping or rodeoing, I’m either riding a horse or checking pastures or whatever. Do you have any brothers or sisters? Wyatt: Yes, a younger brother, Reno, 22. He rodeoed through middle school. What’s your favorite holiday? Wyatt: Thanksgiving. What was your favorite cartoon as a kid? Wyatt: “Tom and Jerry.”
