IN THEIR WORDS JUSTIN M C KEE Announcer becomes host of ‘ProRodeo Tonight’ M y announcing schedule had dwindled over the years, and I wasn’t promoting or pushing the last several years. I wanted to stay home. Our only daughter (Kassidy) was high school Announcer Justin McKee thought he was winding down his career in rodeo.

ideas and she makes it happen. She is a star. She was there when we first launched Cowboy Channel full steam with the PRCA contract. It’s kind of crazy how much I enjoy the studio work. I didn’t think I would. I’m not one to be cooped up. I enjoy telling stories so much I don’t mind being stuck in one place. I had a great start in rodeo. Bob Tallman

He was scheduled to announce just a few rodeos every year and would focus on his ranch and cattle operation in Lenapah, Okla. Then The Cowboy Channel came calling. Since, McKee, 52, and his wife, Jeannie, have moved to Texas near Fort Worth so he could become the face of “ProRodeo Tonight” every Saturday on The Cowboy Channel, providing everything on the weekly show about ProRodeo, from in-depth interviews to live look- ins. To hear McKee tell it, it’s one of the best decisions he’s ever made.

rodeoing. She’s in her third year in college now at Tarleton State. But I wanted to be around for her high school rodeoing. A lot of my jobs went away, and I didn’t pursue filling them up. And it’s a good thing because I probably wouldn’t haveThe Cowboy Channel gig if I had a big schedule of rodeos. It’s funny how things have a way of working themselves out. I can remember the first time I came to the Stockyards in Fort Worth. I was in awe of the Exchange Building. I knew every detail about the Stockyards and what it was all about. Now, I’m working in the sale ring at our studio in the old auction ring for the Stockyards. I’ve come full circle. I’m very grateful for (Cowboy Channel owner) Patrick Gottsch coming to me and giving me ‘ProRodeo Tonight.’ He said, “This is the official show of the PRCA, now create it.” I love telling stories that will inspire and encourage people. A lot of our stories we haven’t had time to tell. One of the elements I’mmost proud of has been our legends features. We have people that are the best there has ever been and nobody knows them outside of competition. No one sat down with (ProRodeo Hall of Famer) Ote Berry and told his story. I’m the first guy who gets to do that. That is such an honor, and it’s very exciting because the sky’s the limit. Karlee Peterson is my co-producer. I come up with

was at the top of the list for people who helped me. Clem McSpadden was another I learned so much from. Bronc Rumford taught me more about announcing rodeos than everyone else. I had the opportunity to go to another organization, and I walked away from rodeo. I wasn’t all in, it wasn’t my life. Then I ranched the last 10 years and rodeo wasn’t my life. I didn’t know how much I missed it until now. I didn’t realize how disconnected I was. Now, I am so thankful. I thank God every day that I’m in rodeo. I’m living it every day. This is what I was created for, to be part of this game. TUNE IN ‘ProRodeo Tonight,’ a weekly, one-hour show that touches on all things ProRodeo, airs Saturdays at 7 p.m. (ET). Host JustinMcKee goes in-depth into the sport to bring viewers the stories beyond the arena. Tune in to The Cowboy Channel or online at thecowboychannelplus.com.

COWBOY GRILLE WITH TRACY RENCK

How’d you get your start in rodeo? Wyatt: Pretty much my whole family rodeoed for years – my grandpa, my dad, my mom. They all influenced me. More than anything, rodeo is just what I grew up doing. Why the late start to your PRCA career? Wyatt: I’m finishing up my master’s degree in science with an emphasis in agriculture at Texas A&M University- Commerce. I also got a bachelor’s degree from there and rodeoed there. I made the College National Finals Rodeo. This will be my third trip there, and this is the first year I’ll get to do team roping and tie-down roping there. I think I bought my PRCA permit four times, and I have done a lot of amateur rodeoing the last nine years. I wanted to amateur rodeo until I felt like my horses were good enough and I found a partner good enough and who wanted to go. Who are you roping with? Wyatt: I’m with Casey McCleskey. This year has been really good. I’ve been able to rope with a good partner. We haven’t won anything big at one time, but we have plucked along. We were able to go to San Antonio for the first time, and we’re going to get to go to Reno (Nev.), which I’m really looking forward to. What horses are you riding? Wyatt: I’m riding a black calf horse called Ears, 17, and a head horse named Kidd, 16. A big difference this year compared to when I rodeoed in the past is we would maybe rodeo for a week somewhere, but then we would go home. Now being gone for a month or two months and keeping the horses working well, feeling good and getting from one place to the other is a big difference. Do you have a favorite event between team roping and tie-down roping? Rookie Wyatt Muggli, 25, grew up in the sport of rodeo. His grandfather is Clyde Frost, a seven-time NFR qualifier. His mom, Robin, is the older sister of the late Hall of Famer Lane Frost. Wyatt’s father, Mark, also rode bulls and steer wrestled in the PRCA. Wyatt, who lives in Lane, Okla., bought his PRCA card in September. He’s leading the rookie team roping header standings and is second in tie-down roping.

WYATT MUGGLI

Wyatt: Honestly, I couldn’t pick. I don’t really have one that I like over the other. I like being able to do two events. Normally if one is going slow the other is going well. What would it mean if you could win rookie of the year in your events? Wyatt: That would be great. Every kid grows up hearing about that, and that would be really cool. It’s a one-time deal, and there are a lot of guys

who have won a lot who still wear that buckle. I don’t go as fast as a lot of guys in my events. I just try and ride my horse good and catch them all every time. If I draw good, win something, and if I don’t draw good, I still want to catch them and keep my horses working good for the next one. What’s your favorite movie? Wyatt: I watch a bunch of different types of movies, and if I had to pick one, I would say “Braveheart.” What’s your go-to restaurant? Wyatt: There’s a little one there in Atoka (Okla.) called Cazadorez. I usually get the shrimp quesadilla. What’s your favorite dessert? Wyatt: Homemade chocolate chip cookies. What’s was the make of your first car? Wyatt: I had a choice between mom and dad helping me out buying a pickup or helping me out buying a

horse. I got a horse and I kept driving their cars. Who are the rodeo competitors you would pay to watch? Wyatt: I would enjoy getting to watch guys you grew up hearing about like Fred (Whitfield), Cody (Ohl) and Joe Beaver and then guys like Speed Williams and Rich Skelton and Jake Barnes and Clay O’Brien. What do you do when you’re not rodeoing? Wyatt: My family runs cattle, and if I’m not roping or rodeoing, I’m either riding a horse or checking pastures or whatever. Do you have any brothers or sisters? Wyatt: Yes, a younger brother, Reno, 22. He rodeoed through middle school. What’s your favorite holiday? Wyatt: Thanksgiving. What was your favorite cartoon as a kid? Wyatt: “Tom and Jerry.”

TIME CAPSULE VERNE ELLIOTT

The Forerunner ‘Dean of them all’ was one of rodeo’s first producers BY SCOTT KANIEWSKI W hen there’s a picture of you surrounded by Casey Tibbs, Bill Linderman and Buster Ivory and you’re the one receiving a plaque, you’ve probably done some good things in the world of rodeo. Verne Elliott did more than a few good things. The ProRodeo Hall of Famer (inducted in 1990) was considered one of the first rodeo producers. Elliott started as a competitor but suffered a number of injuries. The Colorado cowboy wasn’t about to quit the sport he loved. PRCA ProRodeo file photos From left: Casey Tibbs, Bill Linderman, Verne Elliott and Buster Ivory. Elliott shows off a plaque he received from the RCA in 1955 as a pioneer in rodeo.

Instead, in 1917, he partnered with Eddie McCarty and produced the first indoor rodeo held in Fort Worth, Texas. There, Elliott built the first bucking chutes used in competition. And it didn’t stop there. Elliott and McCarty also produced the first Denver National Western Rodeo in 1931, now one of the biggest winter rodeos in the PRCA. Elliott continued to produce the National Western after McCarty’s death in 1946, until he died in 1962. Elliott was born in Colorado on July 4, 1890. He and McCarty grew to take rodeos to New York in 1922 and London in 1924 and 1934. According to the September 1962 edition of the Western Horseman , rodeo announcer Pete Adams called Elliott, “… rodeo’s greatest personality – the dean of them all.”

SHORT ROUND Award-winning horse Craig at Midnight dies at 15 Passing On

P owder River Rodeo’s Craig at Midnight, the 2016 PRCA Bareback Horse of the Year and the top bareback horse at the 2017 National Finals Rodeo, passed away June 5. He was 15. “This was just out of the blue, and we don’t have any idea what happened to him,” said Lori Franzen of Powder River Rodeo. “It’s devastating and a total shock. It breaks my heart and I’ve cried a million tears. (On June 5), Craig Roe fed him in the morning and that afternoon we found him dead on our ranch (in Riverton, Wyo.). We raised him as a colt, and he started winning awards as soon as he started competing in the PRCA.” Craig at Midnight was a ranch-raised

colt out of world champion sire Cut The Cards and mare T33 KC Rocket (Tooke bloodline). Craig at Midnight was buried next to the Franzen’s house under a cottonwood tree next to Powder River Rodeo’s ProRodeo Hall of Fame bareback horse Khadafy Skoal. The last time Craig at Midnight competed was April 17 at the Red Bluff (Calif.) Round-Up. Wyatt Bloom had an 81-point ride aboard the horse. “He had such a cool personality, and he was just so talented and athletic for his obscene size,” Franzen said. “He weighed 1,700 pounds. He was huge. Around the ranch he was kind. He had some attitude, but he would never try and hurt you. When he

was in the chute, he would buck so hard every time and he gave his full heart every time.” Craig at Midnight was the 2016 Pendleton Whisky “Let ‘er Buck” Bucking Stock of the Year in bareback riding. That year Craig had 11 outs during the regular season, with eight of the 11 riders lasting eight seconds. All eight of those cowboys earned a check, with two of them placing first and two others placing second. The gray gelding went to the NFR eight consecutive years (2013-20). Franzen said they have a full sister to Craig at Midnight, Chop, 16.
