VERNAL, UTAH
Win has Hanchey set for summer run Back on Track DINOSAUR ROUNDUP RODEO
BY ALEX RILEY, Special to ProRodeo Sports News S hane Hanchey knows that in tie-down roping, timing is everything. From the throw of a rope to the speed of tying a knot, every second matters. But sometimes, fortuitous timing outside of the competition itself can certainly help the cause. While he waited for his run during slack at the Dinosaur Rodeo Roundup in Vernah, Utah, Hanchey came to realize the pen of calves was running low and by the time he would be due up the pool would reset, giving him a better chance of drawing a more quality calf. “I actually had the calf that Riley Webb was 8.9 (seconds) on. So, it never hurts when you draw good for sure, but they don’t write your name on the check for drawing good. You’ve still got to go do your job,” Hanchey said. The Sulphur, La., cowboy did just that, completing his run in 7.9 seconds to finish ahead of Webb, Quade Hiatt and Michael Otero, who all tied for second at 8.9 seconds each. The win earned Hanchey a $4,512 payday, something the veteran cowboy described as a “much-needed” result. Since picking up almost $4,500 at RodeoHouston back in March, things have been a bit of a roller-coaster for Hanchey. He’s left 12 of the 17 rodeos he’s competed at empty-handed since Houston. Prior to the start of June, Hanchey had just $3,111 in earnings since mid-March. Throughout all the difficulties, Hanchey has kept steady with hope that things would start to change. On May 20, Hanchey and his wife, Taylor, welcomed their first child, Stran, into the world. It was a milestone moment of personal elation during some lean times professionally. But, over the last two weeks, the results have started to turn in his favor. Hanchey picked up a little more than $1,200 at the Sisters (Ore.) Rodeo in early June, his first earnings since late April. The money from Vernal vaulted Hanchey from the mid-30s of the PRCA | RAM World Standing into the top 30 with more than $26,700 for the year. With the summer schedule still to unfold, Hanchey is excited for the opportunities ahead of him. He’s got a full slate of competitions lined up, starting in Canada where Taylor and Stran will join him. After that, it’s full throttle ahead for Hanchey as he looks to make up ground in the world standings and get himself in position to earn a 15th straight trip to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. It’s a challenge he’s excited to face. “I’ve been in this position before. And I’ve been in worse positions. With my career, I’ve had a lot of good winters and I’ve had a lot of bad winters,” Hanchey said. “Even more so now with the amount of money there is to be won in the summer, a man really has a chance at the NFR from way back as far as the world standings are concerned.”
