IN THEIR WORDS HAYES SMITH Team roping header shooting for first Wrangler NFR I ’m at Reno right now – we’re upWednesday. Then we go to Prineville, Ore., Friday, then on to Greeley, because he didn’t rodeo for a few years. When we did, we had green horses. Our horses aren’t green anymore. We’re better mounted is the main thing. I’m riding a dun mare named Smooch. I’m

The month of February was extremely kind to team roping header Hayes Smith. The 28-year-old from Oregon had never had a good winter before 2021. In February, Hayes and heeler Justin Davis earned more than $15,000 each in combined winnings at Rapid City, S.D., San Antonio and Jackson, Miss. The duo are back together this season for the first time since 2018. And they’re both in position to qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas in December. Smith, in seventh place in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings in heading, is trying to qualify for his first Finals. Davis is in the hunt for qualification No. 2 – but his first since 2009 – sitting at 12th in heeling. Smith missed last year’s Fourth of July run with a broken finger. That’s not the case this season, as he’s heading to nearly a dozen rodeos between Reno, Nev., and St. Paul, Ore. He also missed the 2017 NFR by three spots, finishing 18th. Injuries and horse issues have hurt his chances the last few years, but he and his horses are rolling in 2021.

Colo., Prescott, Ariz., Cody, Wyo., Livingston, Mont., Belle Fourche, S.D., Eugene, Ore., and St. Paul.

going to ride her tomorrow ( June 22) at Reno. She’s back from injury. I’ve been roping on her the last week-and-a-half and she feels 100 percent. Justin and I are pretty good friends. I really don’t even know how I convinced him to rodeo again. I’m sure there was beer involved, and we were talking before the winter. He had a good horse again, and I was going to rodeo either way, I just didn’t know who with. I got him to do it. I don’t think we’ve missed a beat. I think the Tour Finale (at California Rodeo Salinas) is going to pay a lot this year. Just the fact you get to rope at Salinas is pretty cool. It’s important. I know we have to go to so many rodeos to qualify. We’ll keep hitting them. Every check we’ve won has been at a Tour rodeo. Finishing 18th was frustrating obviously. But really, going into that year I had no idea I was going to do what I did. I hadn’t really rodeoed before. I’d gone a little bit the year before. I was happy the way it turned out. It would mean the world to make the Finals. It’s what I’ve dreamed of since my dad (Don Elms) put a rope in my hand. I’ll just keep moving forward.

It’s pretty nice. The only rodeo we’re missing that I would usually go to is Molalla, Ore. (which was canceled due to the pandemic). They’re all having rodeos, and all of them added almost what they usually do. Last year, I got hurt before the Fourth of July and was out until the middle of August. I broke my left middle finger. It got caught in my dally. They had to put screws in it. I underwent surgery and couldn’t grip the reins. It never felt right the rest of the year. Really, going into this winter was the first time it felt 100 percent. I’ve never had a good winter. By far this was my best. It was awesome. For as few rodeos as they had for us (during the winter), to win that much was pretty cool. I don’t think it’s you need to (have a good winter), but it’s just nice to have a good start and have some confidence going into the summer. Justin and I hadn’t roped together since 2018

COWBOY GRILLE WITH TANNER BARTH

How’d you get your start in rodeo? Beau: My parents both rodeoed, and we all grew up on a ranch. We have just kind of always done it our whole lives. My dad rodeoed professionally and was a pickup man for quite a few years. My mom did behind-the-scenes at things at rodeo events. So, I’ve ridden horses since I was a little kid and I always wanted to rope. Then, I fell in love with (tie-down roping) and here we are. When did you know you could make a career out of rodeo? Beau: To be honest with you, not very long ago. I think I only roped my first calf, like tie-down roping that is, probably when I was 14 or 15 years old. I’ve just gotten better and better ever since. Now, it’s something I’m going to try and do as career for a while. Why did you decide tie-down roping would be your event? Rookie cowboy Beau Cooper, 19, grew up on a ranch and always had the idea that one day he would be a professional cowboy. Cooper is from Stettler, Alberta, Canada, but has spent much of the past six months in America. The tie-down roper bought his PRCA card in March and finds himself atop the PRCA | Resistol Rookie Standings in tie-down roping with $16,107, which is also good enough for 27th in the PRCA | RAM World Standings as of June 22.

BEAU COOPER

Beau: At first, I kind of wanted to be a team roper. But then I started (tie-down roping) and just fell in love with it. It’s all on me when I go into the arena, and I love the competition. Once you start (tie-down roping) and you see a little progress you just want to keep going and work at it harder. It kind of becomes an addiction of sorts. What horses are you riding right now? Beau: I’m riding a horse my parents have owned since he was a yearling, and he’s 13 now. I had a horse get injured in 2019, so I went back to that horse and started training him. Now, we are both on a great run and know exactly what each other is going to do when we get in that arena. Why did you decide to get your PRCA card right out of high school? Beau: We didn’t get to rodeo last year in Canada, so I decided to come down here to get my permit. I filled that at a rodeo in Lake City, Fla., so I decided I might as well go ahead and get my card. It just kind of started to roll from there, it was a quick deal. I just got my card in March, and now I’m leading the rookie standings. Who is someone you look up to in the rodeo business right now? Beau: I have a pretty good mentor right now in 2013 PRCA World Champion

Shane Hanchey, he’s one of the best to ever do it. I kind of owe everything to him and his wife, Taylor. They’ve given me the opportunity to be down here and learn from them. It’s become like a second home for me. So, I’m grateful for them and just excited to be able to rodeo.

What your favorite TV show? Beau: I don’t get to watch a ton of tv, but we do like to turn on “Yellowstone” when we can. What’s your go-to meal before or after a rodeo? Beau: It sure seems like we eat a lot of Popeyes or Mexican food when we are on the road. What’s the first vehicle you drove? Beau: The first vehicle I drove was an old 2004 3500 Dodge RAM pickup. What do you do when you’re not rodeoing? Beau: I love hunting, I like it probably just as much as I do rodeo.

If I’m not out rodeoing, I’m going to be hunting for sure back in Canada. We hunt a lot of deer, elk and coyotes up there. It’s a really good time. What’s your favorite holiday? Beau: It’s probably when I’m hunting, I consider a hunting trip a holiday for sure. What was your favorite cartoon growing up? Beau: I would say either “Wile E. Coyote and the Roadrunner” or “Tom and Jerry.”

TIME CAPSULE AMONG THE ’BOYS

PRCA ProRodeo photo

One of a Kind Haptonstall rode beyond the whistle BY TANNER BARTH F or a long time, ProRodeo cowboys have been known to known for riding past the necessary eight seconds, which was something he was used to. In the early ’70s, he was on the ride of his life and finding success at nearly every stop along the way. He won or placed in nearly every major PRCA rodeo at the time, places like Denver, Cheyenne, Wyo., Fort Worth, Texas, and Houston. He started his rodeo competition at an early age, Martin Haptonstall, left, could neither hear nor speak, yet he rode plenty of bulls while competing in ProRodeo. He didn’t care if he was deaf

have something few other athletes have in the way of courage and determination. But no one better typifies that kind of man than former PRCA bull rider Martin Haptonstall, who joined the PRCA in 1973. Fans who watched Haptonstall ride a bull or a bronc in the late 1970s probably never knew he was a cowboy who could neither hear nor speak. Throughout his rodeo career, Haptonstall never once knew when he had reached the eight-second whistle, something he said he never thought about once that gate swung open. “I don’t actually count,” he explained via sign language through his wife, Kelly, in the Aug. 24, 1980, edition of the Tri-City Herald. “Sometimes the clowns help me, but mostly I just feel it.” Haptonstall passed away in January 1989 at the age of 39, but he left a legacy behind the sport will never forget. Since he couldn’t hear the qualifying whistle, he was

competing in youth rodeos around his home state of Washington in the ’60s. Even at that age he asked for no special favors. He paid his entry fees like everyone else and competed in the toughest competitions. His younger brother, Harold, was at his side throughout their rodeo careers. Harold also was a bull rider, often pushing Martin to the limit in the arena, but it never fazed the lifelong cowboy. In fact, it was an envelope he had been pushing his entire life. He didn’t care if he was deaf and mute, he was out there to prove he belonged like any other cowboy, no matter what obstacle he had to overcome along the way.
