ABOUT J.W. AGE: 38 HOMETOWN: Moville, Iowa EVENT: Team Roping Heeler CAREER HIGHLIGHT: Five-time circuit champion
BY JOLEE JORDAN, Special to ProRodeo Sports News I f full-time ProRodeo cowboy had a job description, road warrior would likely be as important a required skill as anything needed inside the arena. And that’s the part where team roper J.W. Beck just says he’s out. “I don’t like to travel, I never did,” Beck said. That’s why the PRCA’s circuit system is a great fit for the six-time Great Lakes Circuit Champion heeler who prefers home to hours spent behind the wheel.
In fact, Beck might never have caught the rodeo “addiction” if not for wife, Robin, whom he met when they were teammates at Southeastern Oklahoma State in Durant. Though Beck had made the college team and was around the sport thanks to his father’s work as a pick-up man, rodeoing wasn’t really on his radar. “I was about 10, I guess, and I’d been going with my dad and his crew working cattle,” he said, noting that he wasn’t really helping get the chores done. “My dad (Robert) finally said, ‘You’ve got to start doing something.’”
