EDITOR’S LETTER TRACY RENCK

I n the world we live in, reality TV is everywhere. Sorry to burst the bubble, but reality TV is scripted reality for the most part for ratings. That’s a transition into March 27 at the PRCA headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colo. That is the day the 2023 ProRodeo Hall of Fame inductees were chosen. So, cold calls were made and what you saw was raw emotion and some funny responses. Here’s what happened when steer wrestler Luke Branquinho was notified. Her response: “Seriously?” When PRCA CEO Tom Glause congratulated Harris, he said when we first called you hung up and we were wondering if you thought it was a robo call? “Was that just our thoughts here?” Glause said with a chuckle. Harris caught off-guard offered this response. “I’m terribly sorry,” she said. “I honestly thought I’m not taking this call. Who is this call? I’m so sorry. I was hoping you wouldn’t notice, but dang it.” There was plenty of emotion when a caller contacted Tom Feller about his selection. Caller: Are you going to be free July 14-15 to be inducted? Feller: I can be. When a caller let Butch Knowles know of his induction – Knowles’ reaction was real. “I’m going to ask you a question, what are you doing July 14-15?” Knowles said: “I really don’t know.” The caller said, “Well I do. You’re coming to Colorado Springs because you’re being inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame.” A stunned Knowles said, “Oh my gosh, are you serious?” The caller said “Yes.” Then Knowles said, “That’s pretty humbling. Holy cow. For a guy who does a lot of talking, I don’t have many words to say.” To see these candid responses was memorable to say the least and they all are deserving of this ultimate honor. Raw emotion of 2023 ProRodeo HOF inductees a treat Tracy Renck is the editor of the ProRodeo Sports News . He previously served more than seven years as a media coordinator at the PRCA. He has three decades of experience in sports journalism with the last several consumed by ProRodeo. Here was the dialogue: Caller: Are you retired? Branquinho: I’m retired. Caller: Can you clear up your calendar for July 14-15? There’s one more rodeo you have to go to. Branquinho: There’s a what? Sh*t. I have Calgary Stampede TV. Caller: Would you make an exception to be in the Hall of Fame? Branquinho: I signed my contract with them, but I could talk to them and see. Caller: Well congratulations because you are new member of the Class of 2023, my friend. Branquinho: Well, sh*t, now I have to clear my schedule. I appreciate that. Are you jacking with me? Caller: Nope. We are up here, and it was a unanimous decision, and you are inducted this year. Branquinho: I appreciate that. That is awesome. Betsy Harris of the Cowtown Rodeo in Pilesgrove, N.J., was called to let her know her rodeo was being inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame.

Record Run

“The biggest thing with that run was me being able to make a good run at the barrier. I got caught up fast and was able to get him cleaned up. This win is great, to tell you the truth I never thought I’d be out here rodeoing at these big winter rodeos again.”

Stan Branco has competed on ProRodeo’s biggest stage, qualifying for his lone Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in 2013. He has sights set on returning to Las Vegas this season after winning Rodeo Austin with an arena-tying 3.2-second run. In total, Branco walked out of the Travis County Exposition Center with $10,270 .

COWBOY GRILLE WITH TANNER BARTH

Cutter Pake Thomison, 21, spent the past two seasons in ProRodeo competing on his permit. The Hermleigh, Texas, team roping heeler purchased his PRCA card in 2023 and couldn’t be happier with his decision. Thomison and partner Tyler Waters captured the team roping title at the Goliad (Texas) County Fair & PRCA Rodeo, March 19. He currently leads the Resistol Rookie of the Year race with $13,490 earned this season.

How did you get your start in rodeo? Cutter: I grew up in a team roping family, my dad has roped as long as I can remember. My mom rodeoed in college and growing up. Then I’ve got two younger sisters, who are also involved in rodeo. So, it’s just kind of been a way of life for me. It’s more of a lifestyle than a hobby. When did you know you could make a career out of rodeo? Cutter: When I realized you could win money and make a living roping that was around the time, I decided that’s what I’m going to do for the rest of my life. I’m going to try and make a living doing it. What do you like most about rodeo? Cutter: I love the competitiveness of it and getting to go up and down the road. We get to go to different places all the time and meet new people. I get to see the country, while getting to do something I love to do. Why did you decide team roping would be your event? Cutter: Growing up we just mainly did team roping, so I think that’s why. I tried tie-down roping a little bit, but everything just kind of fell back to team roping. It’s where my roots are. Why did you decide to get your PRCA card this year?

CUTTER PAKE THOMISON

Cutter: The last few years I’ve been rodeoing on my permit and just getting a taste of it. I didn’t want to jump into it too early because I wanted to give myself the best shot at the Rookie of the Year race. Who’s someone you look up to in the rodeo business right now? Cutter: I’m a heeler, so I look up to some of the heelers like Wesley Thorp, Hunter Cook, and Wyatt Cox. If I ever have any questions or need help with something I know they are just one call away and will give me good advice. What’s one rodeo you want to win in your career? Cutter: Shoot, I’d love to win all of them. I really want to win Cheyenne (Wyo.), I’d love nothing more than to win a ‘Daddy of ‘Em All’ buckle someday. What have you learned during your rookie season? Cutter: So far, I would say I’ve learned you need to be as prepared as you can be when you get to where you’re going. Also, don’t try too hard, but don’t beat yourself either. What’s your favorite movie? Cutter: I think I would have to go with Nacho Libre . It’s a little different than what you might think, but it’s a good one. Do you have a favorite sports team? Cutter: I don’t get to watch a ton of sports, but I’d probably have to go with the Texas Rangers in the MLB. What’s your favorite candy? Cutter: My favorite candy would probably have to be Airheads. They are a great snack for going up and down the road. They’ll help keep you awake on those late-night drives. What was the make and model of the first vehicle you drove? Cutter: My first vehicle was a 1997 Chevrolet Z71. I’ve moved on to something a little more dependable now. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not rodeoing? Cutter: I’m very involved with my church. So, anytime I’m not at a rodeo or a jackpot I like to be at the church on the weekends or during the week. Then spending time with my family and friends as well. What’s your favorite holiday? Cutter: I’d have to say my birthday because I get a few presents. I’d have to go with that one, I think. What was your favorite cartoon growing up? Cutter: My favorite shows when I was younger weren’t really cartoons. It was more of The Roy Rogers Show and The Lone Ranger . What type of music do you like listening to? Cutter: I’m a big fan of Christian music. Casting Crowns is probably one of my favorites.

Cowboy Channel announces Spanish-language feed Branching Out

T he Cowboy Channel is proud to announce the creation of a separate feed for Spanish-language viewers providing full coverage of all performances of the PRCA’s Top 10 rodeos. Spanish language productions for Fort Worth, San Antonio, Houston, Austin, San Angelo, Reno, Calgary, Cheyenne, Salinas, Pendleton, and the Wrangler NFR in Las Vegas will now be offered as part of a monthly or yearly subscription to the PRCA on Cowboy Channel Plus App. The first live broadcast feed of The Cowboy Channel Deportes will start on June 15 with the Reno Rodeo. The Cowboy Channel Deportes will also be offered on a regional basis to Spanish-language cable and broadcast channels to support these rodeos and to help develop new fan support in their respective local markets. “Our #1 goal at The Cowboy Channel has always been to grow the fan base, and viewership, for rodeo and western sports”, stated Patrick Gottsch, Founder of The Cowboy Channel. “The Hispanic community in the United States, and throughout all North & South America, are deeply involved in the western lifestyle. We believe that The Cowboy Channel can help bridge this small gap by producing a year-long Spanish-language feed, so that these fans can now follow the regular ProRodeo season from start to finish, growing attendance and interest for all rodeos across the country.”

“The PRCA will be able to expand our fan base, and audience with the addition of the Spanish language feed for select PRCA rodeos broadcast on The Cowboy Channel,” PRCA CEO Tom Glause said. “The excitement of rodeo transcends any language, and now our Spanish-speaking fans will be able to fully experience the great sport of ProRodeo.” In partnership with Mexicanal, the

veteran Mexican rodeo broadcast team of Luis Fernando Zepeda de Alba and Roberto Valdez will anchor these broadcasts from The Cowboy Channel studios in the historic Fort Worth Stockyards. Each broadcast will consist of a pre-show, just like the one produced on The Cowboy Channel prior to each Top 10 rodeo performance. The Cowboy Channel Deportes will simply be an additional option of the various “live” feeds available on the PRCA on Cowboy Channel Plus app and archived so viewers can access any of these Spanish-language broadcasts anytime throughout the year. And with this new feed also allows the opportunity for Spanish-language commercials to be inserted into the commercial breaks, specifically on The Cowboy Channel Deportes. “Mexicanal is proud to be a part of this very important initiative with The Cowboy Channel, bringing western sports programming in the Spanish language to the millions of Hispanics throughout the United States”, Demian Torres-Bohl, President of Mexicanal said.

Reno Rodeo fans who want to get their boots dirty have several ways to get involved ahead of the “Wildest, Richest Rodeo in the West” set for June 15-24. Miss Reno Rodeo – Application due March 31: The search for the 2024 Miss Reno Rodeo is on. Women between the ages of 19 25 with a passion for horsemanship, travel and rodeo culture can apply. Application deadline is March 31 and the pageant is June 7–9. For more info or to apply, please visit RenoRodeo. com under the Get Involved tab. Contestants are asked to submit a YouTube or Vimeo link of themselves singing the anthem to rodeoidol@gmail. com along with a short bio and headshot. Submissions will be collected through April 13 with finalists announced on April 30. Wranglers – Application due May 12: Over the last 100 years, with the help of almost 1,000 volunteers, the Reno Rodeo has become one of the largest outdoor rodeos in the world. Every year, the Reno Rodeo Association depends on the hard work and collaboration of its 50+ volunteer committees to put on one of northern Nevada’s largest events. Those interested in volunteering for the Reno Rodeo, are asked to complete a Wrangler application and submit it to the office with a headshot photo for their Reno Rodeo ID badge and a one-time application fee of $25 Special Kids’ Reno – Application due May 26: The Special Kids’ Rodeo (SKR) is one of the

most popular events at the Reno Rodeo. Open to children and young adults under the age of 18 with physical and mental exceptionalities, this annual event is a fun way for children to experience the cowboy way of life firsthand. Participants enjoy riding a “mechanical” bull, roping steer dummies, riding a horse and more. Applications open on April 1, and the final deadline to apply, space permitting, is May 26, 2023. Space is limited to 40 participants during each of the three sessions. All children are assisted (as needed) into the rodeo area by volunteers of the Reno Rodeo Association. The 2023 Special Kids’ Rodeo will take place on Sunday, June 18 in the Indoor Pavilion Arena. In addition to the publicity that comes with sponsoring a team, contestants and sponsors will receive Reno Rodeo tickets, a parking pass, nearly five minutes of glory in the famed Reno Rodeo arena and a chance to go home with the highly coveted Reno Rodeo BSD Championship belt buckle. For more information on all the ways to get involved in the Reno Rodeo, or to purchase tickets, visit RenoRodeo.com.

HOUSTON, TEXAS

Ky Hamilton wins coveted crown On Top BY TANNER BARTH T o say bull rider Ky Hamilton is on a heater may be an understatement. In a 32-day stretch from Feb. 24 through March 26, the Mackay, Australia, native RODEOHOUSTON

TOP SCORES

TOP MONEY EARNER Ky Hamilton ($67,750, bull riding) BAREBACK RIDING

covered 10 of the 13 bulls he rode. Perhaps none meant more to his 2023 ProRodeo season than a matchup with The Cervi Brothers’ Dim Tricks at NRG Stadium, March 19. In front of a crowd of nearly 75,000, Hamilton delivered one of the best rides of his career. His eight second effort was good enough for 90.5 points and the RodeoHouston title. He said it’s an opportunity he’s been waiting for after missing out on the chance a year ago. “It’s a big deal. Last year was my first year there and I won my set,” said Hamilton, a three-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier. “Then I went to another bull riding, and I actually lacerated my kidney and didn’t get to come back for the semis. “I was really disappointed because I love that rodeo. I love not only the amount of money there, but the whole atmosphere. It’s one of the biggest paying rodeos we get to go to. So, to be able to not only win it, but win every round is pretty special.” Hamilton walked out of Houston with $67,750 added to his name, which includes the $50,000 won for his ride in the Championship Shootout. Hamilton said when the stakes are the highest, he seems to perform at his best. “I don’t know why I feel so comfortable there, but I just do,” Hamilton said. “I think the bigger the stage the more comfortable I feel. I don’t know why that is. Growing up that’s all I ever wanted to do, was ride at big events and win big events and win world titles. The bigger the stakes, the more comfortable I feel like I am.” Hamilton’s career has been on a steady incline from the moment he purchased his PRCA card in 2019. Last season, he finished fourth in the PRCA | RAM World Standings, tying his 2020 performance for his best finish in ProRodeo. He sees the stars aligning right before his eyes. “I feel as good as I did in 2020, the only difference is I feel I’m a lot more mature now,” he said. “I back myself 100 percent now. In 2020, I was riding really good, but I didn’t realize how good I was. “I wasn’t backing myself as much as I probably should have been. Now, I know I can win, I know how capable I am of winning. Therefore, when you have that kind of confidence on top of actually being able to ride, I feel like that’s the ultimate key.” And he has his sights set on the ultimate prize in 2023. “If I wasn’t showing up to win first, I wouldn’t show up at all,” he said.
