DIRECTOR’S CUT SCOTT KANIEWSKI

Solomon’s San Antonio run about more than rodeo C ory Solomon would rather have been somewhere else on Feb. 25 than San Antonio. He wanted to be somewhere more important than a rodeo.

But being a good cowboy, Solomon had already traded with Kyle Lucas in the semifinals of the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo so Lucas could compete Friday. Because of that, Solomon missed out on taking part in laying to rest family friend Brent Husky. Solomon’s good deed was well rewarded. The tie-down roper from Prairie View, Texas, made a 7.0-second run to win his semifinals bracket. Husky passed away unexpectedly five days prior. That same day, Solomon had spoken with Husky. While Solomon couldn’t be at the service, members of his family attended while Solomon took to Freeman Coliseum. Solomon wanted to do his friend proud,

Scott Kaniewski is the Media Director at the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. He previously served more than two years as the editor of ProRodeo Sports News. He has nearly two decades of experience in sports journalism,

“God wanted me there, that’s how I got there,” Solomon said. “I could’ve made it anyways and maybe not touched people’s lives. But he took a guy who wasn’t in and brought a guy in. That’s just God working.” From there, Solomon took off. He placed in five rounds, winning Round 3. He won $124,654. Solomon left the Finals in fifth place. He had jumped 11 spots. Maybe more importantly, he left with a different way of thinking. “Last year was a God story at the Finals,” he said. “It just changed me as a roper and as a person. I’m on the attack and just want to be better.” Solomon might be quick to point to many reasons for his recent success – he thanks God, he thanks his Brazilian horse, Play, he thanks the luck of his draws. Anyone or anything but himself. On Feb. 25, Solomon headed home – a three-hour drive – to spend time with Husky’s family. Solomon might have felt like he should have been somewhere else – with his family, with Husky’s family, anywhere but at a rodeo. But that night, Cory Solomon was right where he was supposed to be. Photo courtesy San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo Cory Solomon made a 7.0-second run to win the first semifinals bracket in San Antonio, Feb. 25.

but going fourth in the set and seeing two sub-8-second runs and another at 8-flat in the first three runs had Solomon thinking a win might be far-fetched. But this wasn’t about making a rodeo run. This was about making a run for someone who wouldn’t be there when the rodeo ends. Someone who won’t be there ever again. “Tonight was a good night to lay a good run down,” Solomon said. “Hopefully it’ll help them get through a tough time. … It wasn’t one of those rounds where you could safety up. Either you’re a hero or nobody knows you. I was blessed that it worked out tonight.” Hopefully people will know Solomon after his effort, on multiple levels. Solomon is a God-fearing man. It’s readily clear when you talk with him. But his level of dedication to his ProRodeo craft was elevated before last year’s Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. About 48 hours before the NFR. Solomon wasn’t supposed to compete at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, the site of the 2020 NFR. Or maybe he was. Solomon was 16th in the 2020 PRCA | RAMWorld Standings, on the outside looking in at the world’s biggest rodeo by less than $200. But when Caleb Smidt tested positive for COVID-19, Solomon was told he was likely up, filling in for Smidt. Solomon had done nothing in the weeks leading with the last few being consumed by ProRodeo.

up to the NFR. He’d turned his horses out. He’d stopped practicing (“I was sitting on my couch,” he said). Heck, retirement from ProRodeo even ran through the 30-year- old’s mind. He didn’t know how to feel about “backing” into the Finals, as he said. He’d been to the NFR six times prior. He knew how to feel about those Finals. This was different. This was benefiting at the expense of a friend. “Each day I was like, I’m not even supposed to be here, and that just changed my mindset of not putting extra pressure on myself, just go and do my job,” Solomon said. In Round 1, Solomon placed fifth, taking $5,500. It wasn’t necessarily the money that triggered things. But Solomon realized he’d been given a special opportunity.

COWBOY GRILLE WITH TRACY RENCK

How did you get your start in rodeo? Eric: It started out with my grandparents who raised bucking bulls and hauled them to the rodeos. Then, my dad (Jeff) started steer wrestling. He went for a couple years, and when my brother (Jacob) graduated (from high school) he wanted to start, so my dad took him. About the time my dad was going to retire, I popped up and said I wanted to try it, so we all went together my first year. How has your rodeo career played out? Eric: I bought my card in 2014 and played around with it for a couple years. I didn’t go at all last year. I cracked back out this year. Why did you decide to rodeo more in 2021? Eric: I have a wife (Anna) and kids (daughter, Everly, 4, and son, Greyson, 2) and knew with all this COVID stuff going on that there wasn’t going to be a ton of rodeos so I could do more rodeos and still stay kind of close to home. I feel like I can have fun with this year and I wouldn’t have to be gone all summer. My kids haven’t really seen me rodeo much. They have just been watching The Cowboy Channel. We’ve been practicing out here at the house and they’ve been practicing, and, shoot, they do just as much as I do. It’s been a lot of fun. How much do you learn and pick up from your brother? Eric: When I started back this year, he helped me practice every day. He’s awesome in that aspect. What are your rodeo plans for 2021? Eric: I would like to go hard this year and see what I could do with it and take advantage of this opportunity. Where’s your favorite place to eat? Eric: Man, we eat a lot of Mexican food. I like to go to Superior Grill in Shreveport. What’s the most crawfish you’ve eaten in one setting? Eric: A lot. I don’t know what the poundage is, but we eat crawfish quite a bit down here. The hotter the crawfish the better for me. What’s your favorite dessert? Eric: Cheesecake. What’s your favorite movie? Eric: Gladiator . That’s the movie I enjoy watching the most. What’s your favorite holiday? the PRCA in November 2014. He’s never hit the trail hard, but that might change this season. He’s already been to Odessa, Texas, Kissimmee, Fla., and Perry, Ga. He’s also headed to Arcadia, Fla., Okeechobee, Fla., and Montgomery, Ala. Steer wrestler Eric Talley, 27, grew up in rodeo while living in Keatchie, La., about 30 minutes south of Shreveport. His older brother, Jacob, 29, a fellow steer wrestler, has qualified for the National Finals Rodeo three times (2016, 2018 and 2020). Eric, who is 6-foot, 235 pounds, joined

ERIC TALLEY

Eric: Christmas. I enjoy it with everybody getting together, especially now with my kids. I like seeing my kids getting their gifts and watching their faces when they get stuff.

What movies do your children watch that you know the lines to? Eric: Frozen . They watch that all the time. They also watch Toy Story . When you’re not doing rodeo, what do you enjoy doing? Eric: I go hunting a lot, and I also go fishing. I like hunting for deer mostly. Do you have a favorite sports team? Eric: Not really. Doug Pederson, who led the Philadelphia Eagles to a Super Bowl victory in 2018, was my high school football coach at Calvary Baptist Academy in Shreveport, so I used to pay attention to the Eagles. It was different having him as my high school coach. When he first came, he had played 13 seasons in the NFL (as a quarterback), and the first place he came to coach was Calvary. We were running stuff the Green Bay Packers were running and the other teams he played for. It was really neat. I played defensive end, and my senior year I played quarterback and linebacker. Jacob was a left tackle and defensive end.

TIME CAPSULE WILLIE NELSON Willie Nice Rodeo Team

BY MATT NABER W illie Nelson has been singing, “My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys” and “Mamas, Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys” for decades, and in 1985 the Texas musician took his rodeo fandom to the next level by sponsoring a team on the PRCA’s ProTour Division. The Willie NelsonWranglers were formed on Aug. 14, 1985, and included Mel Coleman, Joe Talburt, ProTour Team during 1980s Country legend sponsored

PRCA ProRodeo cowboys,” Nelson said in the Sept. 4, 1985, edition of ProRodeo Sports News . “I’m very honored to be amongst the real cowboys and I do look forward to a long-lasting relationship.” The Tour also included fall rodeos in Lexington, Ky., Reno, Nev., Casper, Wyo., Wichita, Kan., and Spokane, Wash. Wrangler later had Nelson and his rodeo team as the central focus of its national advertising campaign. “It involves a great deal of commitment on both sides – personal, as well as professional,” said David Allen, director of special events for Wrangler Jeans, in that same edition of PSN . “He takes a lot of personal interest in whatever he’s involved with, and he’s very proud to become a part of the Willie NelsonWranglers, our Outfit on the Winston Tour Rodeo series. “There’s a lot of cowboy inWillie Nelson.” Willie Nelson sponsored one of 18 teams on the PRCA’s ProTour Division in the 1980s. The Willie Nelson Wran- glers were formed in August 1985.

Cody Snyder, JohnW. Jones Jr., Marlene Eddleman, Brad Smith and George Aros. The Tour was basically a blend of two of its successors. A handful of top-tier ProRodeo competitions were selected, like today’s ProRodeo Tour. But competitors were divided into 18 teams and each team had its own sponsor. The Willie NelsonWranglers made their debut at the Coors Challenge held in Austin, Texas, Sept. 5-8, 1985. The Coors Challenge was held in the Texas Expo and Heritage Center, as the opening of the six-city Tour. “I’m extremely proud to be associated with a company such as Wrangler and the

Calgary politician pushes bill to make rodeo Alberta’s sport

Country singer Cody Johnson releases trailer for rodeo documentary

On March 1, Calgary-North MLA Muhammad Yaseen introduced Bill 212 before an Alberta Government standing committee, in a proposal that if passed would make rodeo the province’s official sport. Per CTV News Calgary, Yaseen said the sport represented “an important thread” in Alberta’s culture. “As a proud Calgarian I was deeply saddened that the iconic Calgary Stampede had to be canceled last year,” Yaseen said, according to Global News. “This bill will be a beacon of hope for Albertans as we make our way through another challenging year and

serve as a reminder that we have much to look forward to.” The Calgary Stampede, which began in 1912, was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It marked the first time the event has not happened since becoming an annual tradition in 1923. The Stampede brings more than 1 million visitors annually and adds $540 million into the provincial economy per year, according to CBC. In the article published March 2 by sports.yahoo.com, if Bill 212 is passed by the committee, it will move to the legislature for debate, according to the Edmonton Journal.

Cody Johnson, a 2019 nominee for CMA’s New Artist of the Yea r, who was the Round 10 musical performer for the 2020 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas,

has produced a “Dear Rodeo” documentyarfilm. Johnson, who roped and did roughstock events in his youth, recently released the official trailer for “DearRodeo.”Click here to see the trailer .
