Brazile kicked off career with all-around win at Pecos rodeo My First Rodeo COWBOYS LOOKING BACK
BY MATT NABER E ven living legend Trevor Brazile had to start somewhere. One month after graduating high school, the Texas cowboy filled his permit by winning the all- around at his first ProRodeo competition, the 1995West of the Pecos (Texas) Rodeo, earning $3,895 in steer roping and tie-down roping. Since, Brazile has won a PRCA-record 26 world titles – 14 in all-around (also a record), three in tie-down roping, one in team roping, eight in steer roping. But he distinctly recalls that first one more than 25 years ago.

I can’t tell you which events I placed in, but I know I was able to win enough to get my PRCA card. I won the all-around at Pecos, and to this day they give one of the coolest all-around prizes. It was a tooled-leather, hanging-clothes bag, a really nice one, and I remember carrying it forever. It was super intimidating, and the stakes were literally higher entering three events at one of the bigger rodeos. I remember the fees were an investment and I had to win. What was your first ProRodeo win? To me, Pecos was the big win since the all-around was a big deal to me. Although I didn’t win any events, that’s what I considered a win. But I don’t remember my first title-event win. I didn’t win a lot my rookie year, but I learned a lot. When did you stop feeling like the new guy? Not until I got my first all-around championship in 2002, and even then it’s a milestone. Before you win a world championship, you are proving yourself, and when you win one you’re proving that it wasn’t a fluke. It’s a constant, never-ending cycle. I was always wondering if my horses were good enough or if I was taking a set of junior rodeo horses, since I didn’t know any better when competing against these professionals. The biggest thing that people need to realize is that they make it bigger than it is, but it’s like they say – it’s just throwing and catching. It’s what you’ve done since you were a kid, but at a pro level, and that just means making good decisions and doing things more consistently. What do you remember about your first ProRodeo?
