Guy Allen, shares a light moment during his PRCA record 33rd appearance at the National Finals Steer Roping in 2016 in Mulvane, Kan. Allen is

nicknamed The Legend because he has won a PRCA-single event record 18 world

championships in steer roping. PRCA ProRodeo file photo

James not the greatest ever like Allen and Brazile

A ppreciate LeBron James’ greatness. Appreciate his longevity. Appreciate the countless records he has broken. However, whatever you do don’t call him the best basketball player. As a former sportswriter and sports fan for nearly 50 years, there’s no question in my mind how good James has been in his decorated 20-year NBA career. His latest season came to an end when his Los Angeles Lakers were swept by the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference Finals on May 22. There are two distinct problems I have with calling James the greatest ever. His record in the NBA Finals is four championships in 10 trips with four Finals MVPs. Compare that to Michael Jordan. Air Jordan was 6-0 in NBA Finals and was the Finals Most Valuable Player all six times. What’s more, he never had a Finals series go to seven games. This leads me to my second problem with James – he doesn’t have the killer instinct. Michael Jordan was the definition of intensity. Teammates followed his lead to glory. Winning wasn’t everything to Jordan – it was the only thing. When players/teams competed against Jordan they knew they were competing to be second best. James has never put that fear in opponents. Translate the comparisons to rodeo and look no further than steer roper Guy Allen. There’s a reason his nickname was “The Legend.” He won a PRCA-single event record 18 steer roping world championships (1977, 1980, 1982, 1984, 1989, 1991 2001, 2003-2004).

Allen is the gold standard for steer ropers and his invincibility wasn’t lost on his fellow competitors. “It was an accident winning the steer roping (in 1983). I ain’t supposed to beat Guy Allen,” ProRodeo Hall of Famer Roy Cooper told the ProRodeo Sports News. “He’s the greatest in the world.” Allen made 33 trips to the National Finals Steer Roping and won a PRCA record 47 rounds at the NFSR. When you’re the greatest ever in a sport, whether it be in the NBA or rodeo, you must thrive in the spotlight. The bigger the stakes the better you are. That describes Allen perfectly and other greats like Tom Brady (an NFL record seven Super Bowl titles as a quarterback), golfer Jack Nicklaus (a PGA record 18 major championships), and swimmer Michael Phelps (23 Olympic gold medals). Of course, I would be remiss in leaving out the King of Cowboys in this argument – Trevor Brazile. He has a record 26 PRCA world championships and a PRCA-record 54 combined qualifications for the NFR and NFSR. You don’t have those numbers on your resume if you are not the best all-around cowboy of all time. So, as TV and radio personalities light up the airways the next several weeks heaping praise on James, understand he is one of the best players to ever play in the NBA, but he’s not the greatest. Reserve that summit for Jordan and in

rodeo for Allen – in a single event – and Brazile in the all-around. That’s an argument you will not lose.

“I got on Tanner Milan’s horse Eddie in Redding and in Denver. He’s a good fit for me. Maybe I should ride him more. I also have a hazing horse that we started using last fall and since we’ve matched him up with Eddie, they’ve won a pile on them.”

Curtis Cassidy has spent more than two decades and earned more than $2 million in his ProRodeo career. He doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. Cassidy added

another title to his already impressive resume at the Redding (Calif.) Rodeo with 9.7 seconds on two head.

COWBOY GRILLE WITH TANNER BARTH

How’d you get your start in rodeo? Will: My dad and my granddad both rodeoed. My dad started when he was about 12 and he was a calf roper. So, I got into calf roping as soon as I could ride a horse and throw a rope. As soon as I could walk and talk, I was out there trying to rope everything in sight with my chicken rope. When did you know you could make a career out of the sport of rodeo? Will: When I was a freshman in high school, I went to the UPRA Rodeos for the first time and almost made the finals that year. That showed me that I could get close to competing with some of the best. So, that’s when I started to take it a little more serious. Why did you decide to compete in steer roping? Will: It takes a lot of heart and a lot of cowboy to be a steer roper. I think it’s the event that really shows those skills the most. It requires a unique level of horsemanship that I really love. What’s this season been like for you so far? Will: Well, think of a roller coaster that has every high and every low. It seems like I haven’t been able to string together two good runs in a row. I’m going to focus on being a finisher these next few months instead of a one head guy. Why did you decide to buy your PRCA card this year? Will Eddleman, 22, is one of the youngest steer ropers going down the road. As of May 23, the Santa Anna, Texas, cowboy not only leads the Resistol Rookie Standings, but is sitting 40th in the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $7,780. Eddleman finished second in the NFSR Permit Section last November.

WILL EDDLEMAN

Will: I had kicked the idea around since I started my freshman year of college, but I wanted to wait until I didn’t have obligations. I didn’t have to be at a college rodeo in August, so my dad said I guess you probably better buy that card, so you have somewhere to be at once the year starts. I said that’s a pretty good idea. Is there someone you look up to in the sport of rodeo? Will: There are two guys in the steer roping world that are my idols. Every kid that wants to be a steer roper has watched videos of Guy Allen and thought that’s what it’s supposed to look like. Scott Snedecor is probably the next highest on my list. He has really helped out a lot of us younger guys in the sport. What’s one rodeo you want to win in your career? Will: I could not care less about winning rodeos, as long as there’s a gold buckle at the end of it for me. I could win second at them all year long just as long as I found a way to win the world.

What’s your go-to restaurant when you’re out on the road? Will: I might get laughed at a bit by the family for this one, but if there’s an Olive Garden in sight I’m pulling in there. If I’m having a bad day, just get me some spaghetti and I’m good to go. What’s your favorite movie or TV show? Will: If I had to go with a TV show, I would probably have to say Gunsmoke . I’ve watched so much of it with my grandad over the years. As far as my favorite movie goes, it’s The Cowboys with John Wayne. There’s nothing else even really close.

What was the make and model of your first vehicle? Will: It was a 1996 three-quarter ton white second-generation Dodge.

What’s your ideal vacation spot? Will: I’ve been begging to go to Hawaii for so long. I’m hoping that if I can make the Finals in Mulvane (Kan.) this year that can be my reward. What type of music do you like listening to? Will: I’m a big fan of old country music. I hang out with a lot of older people, so I think that rubs off on me. My favorite artist would probably have to be Johnny Paycheck.

Logan Hay out after suffering arm injury in Redding On the Sideline

T hings didn’t go according to plan for Wrangler National Finals Rodeo saddle bronc rider Logan Hay, May 18, at the Redding (Calif.) Rodeo. Hay was aboard Brookman Rodeo’s Lonesome Joy Ride, and he was bucked off before the eight-second whistle and that’s when his problems began. “I had surgery (May 19) in Redding,” said Hay, 26. “It was supposed to be a 40-minute surgery and it ended up being a three hour surgery, but everything went good. I got plates and screws in the tip of elbow on my right arm (free arm). Then I had to get my UCL repaired. “The horse hit me in the head and then on my (right arm). I had a (mild) concussion as well, but my arm is the worst of it. My saddle also fell and hit me in the arm and then he (the horse) hit me in the head.” Tommy John Surgery, more formally known as ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) reconstruction, is used to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament inside the elbow. It is commonly done for pitchers in Major League Baseball. “It kind of depends on how rehab goes,” Hay said. “The bone is for sure going to take a minimum of six weeks, so it is going to take

anywhere between six weeks to three months. I have two weeks that I have to stay in this sling cast thing, and I will get that off and then I can start doing rehab on my own. I have some places up here in Wildwood, Alberta, that I have been going to that helped me, so I will be doing that. “My goal is to be ready for the Fourth of July. I’m going to do everything I can to be ready by then. Hopefully my healing goes accordingly, and I can do that. If not, we will just have to keep rolling with it.” Hay, who was getting aboard Lonesome Joy Ride for the first time, is 17th in the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $37,111. “Hopefully I will not be out too long,” Hay said. “This (injury) just comes with rodeoing. Last year I had surgery on my (left) ankle after I broke it in Mercedes, Texas, in March, and I still ended third in the world. This is just something that comes with it, and it is unfortunate.” Hay made his Wrangler NFR debut in 2022, finishing third in the world standings with $339,401. He earned $199,960 at the NFR in Vegas, placing in six rounds and winning Rounds 5, 6 and 7. He finished second in the NFR average with 863 points on 10 head.

REDDING RODEO

Unique team roping duo of Williams/Stewart win Partnership

BY JOLEE JORDAN, Special to ProRodeo Sports News D uring the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association rodeos in the West Coast Region, Cody Stewart is doing his best to help his team from Feather River College defeat the team from Lassen College, coached by DanWilliams Jr. But during the spring run of ProRodeo, the two multi-event cowboys have teamed up with success, including a big win in the team roping at the 75th anniversary of the Redding (Calif.) Rodeo on May 20. The duo roped two steers in 11.1 seconds, earning $6,035 apiece to move each cowboy to second in the current California Circuit standings. “It was fun,”Williams, 39, said. He split the win in the team roping in Redding in 2018 and has placed nearly every year at the rodeo, which he called his hometown rodeo before moving to Susanville to take the coaching job at Lassen. With good checks in a round and the average of the tie-down roping, Williams also picked up the all-around title with $8,154. “It was pretty cool,” he said, noting that he has competed inside the Redding Rodeo Grounds arena since his high school rodeo days. “I’ve split it a couple of times, but I had never placed in multiple events before.” As it turned out, his stiffest competition in the all-around race nearly came from his partner. “I got the barrier on my first one in the tie-down to win it,” Stewart, 22, said. “I guess I’ll let him have this one,” he added with a joke. Stewart grew up roping, following in his dad’s footsteps, and has a couple of trips to the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) under his belt already in both the tie-down roping and team roping, making the top 10 both times. The partnership came together when Stewart transferred fromWest Hills College to Feather River, moving back home to Janesville, which is just down the road from Susanville. “We roped together at some of the amateur events a couple of years ago,” Stewart said. “We live right down the road from each other, so we can practice together and work on our run.” “He lives about a mile fromme,” Williams added. “He goes to Feather River, so I see him at the college rodeos, and we go brand cows and do things together. So, I talked to him about getting together for the ProRodeos.” The team kicked things off with a check at King City in February and has been solid through the spring run. “We’ve been plugging along but it felt like it finally came together,” Williams said. Williams has been aboard Fifty, a palomino horse he raised and trained while Stewart uses Cracker, a bay mare he has ridden since sixth grade. Competing on the final day of the rodeo in Redding, Williams and Stewart pulled tight in 5.4 seconds on the first steer to tie for the round win. The pair went 5.7 seconds in the second round to split third in that go and clinch the average by three tenths over Daniel and Graves. “It is my biggest ProRodeo win so far,” Stewart said. Now that the team “is starting to click,” Williams and Stewart are contemplating making a little rodeo run this summer following a trip to Casper for the College Finals. Stewart is competing in the tie-down roping at his final CNFR, while Williams is coaching a teammember in the bull riding. After that, Williams will be prepping for the NFR Open; he qualified after winning the California Circuit Finals on New Year’s weekend with Todd Hampton.
