EDITOR’S LETTER TRACY RENCK

Cowboys getting ready for crucial summer rodeo run Phil Doyle photo The Reno (Nev.) Rodeo is the kickoff to the summer run for PRCA contestants. The 2022 Reno Rodeo runs from June 17-25.

I t seems like yesterday – Dec. 11 – the curtain dropped on the thrilling 2021Wrangler National Finals Rodeo at theThomas &Mack Center in Las Vegas. Fast-forward to the present and the calendar is getting ready to flip to June 1. That means there are only four months left for cowboys to rodeo and ultimately try and qualify for the 2022Wrangler NFR Dec. 1-10 in Las Vegas. Some cowboys – namely the season leaders bareback rider Jess Pope, steer wrestler Hunter Cure, team roping header Kaleb Driggers, team roping heeler Junior Nogueira, saddle bronc rider Sage Newman, tie-down roper John Douch, barrel racer Jordon Briggs and bull rider Stetson Wright can make their reservations. Barring unforeseen circumstances, all these cowboys will place in the Top 15 in their events by the end of the regular season Sept. 30. Jess Tierney is leading the steer roping standings with $31,064. The 2022 National Finals Steer Roping will take place in November in Mulvane, Kan. For those people keeping track at home, here are some numbers to digest as cowboys chase coveted NFR bids. The Top 15 cutoff in events were as follows in 2021, bareback rider Zach Hibler ($65,381), steer wrestler Curtis Cassidy ($64,548), team roping header Quin Kesler ($62,403), team roping heeler Joseph Harrison ($61,688), saddle bronc rider Spencer Wright ($74,061), tie-down roper

Rodeo is June 17-25, and it is a big payday on the NFR Playoff Series presented by PendletonWhisky. A year ago, the Reno Rodeo payout was nearly $700,000. Mix in Reno with the lucrative Cowboy Christmas run at the end of June and first of July and it is easy to see why a contestant’s season can be pointed toward Vegas in seemingly a blink of the eye. In 2021, the top five timed-event Cowboy Christmas earners were Tuf Cooper ($31,255), Dustin Egusquiza/Travis Graves ($30,464 each), Andrew Burks ($22,513) and Shad Mayfield ($20,915). On the roughstock end, Caleb Bennett ($20,264), Pope ($19,832), StetsonWright ($19,519), Jordan Spears ($15,702) and Clayton Biglow ($14,134) were stuffing their stockings. There are also many more top-dollar rodeos right after Cowboy Christmas, like the Calgary Stampede and the inaugural NFR Open powered by RAM in Colorado Springs, Colo., July 13-16, which will be one of the biggest rodeos of the season with $1 million in payouts to contestants, livestock and other PRCAmembers. So, to review, contestants can’t qualify for the NFR or NFSR in the middle of July. However, those who are all-in on making it to the NFR or NFSR need to put these coveted trips in focus by then capitalizing on opportunities. Solidifying a position in the Top 15 is a much more ideal situation than bouncing around the bubble – just outside the Top 15 and chasing rodeos all around the country the last week of the season to get into the Top 15. Honestly contestants don’t care how they get to the NFR, they just want to be there to have the chance to compete and go after the ultimate prize, a gold buckle.

Douch ($88,874), barrel racer Molly Otto ($64,173) and bull rider Roscoe Jarboe ($95,778). The No. 15 steer roper was Cash Myers with $33,657. In simple terms, the push starts now for competitors with NFR and NFSR dreams. There’s no re-inventing the wheel here. Many world champions have said the PRCA “season” starts at Reno, Nev. Ora Taton is no stranger to rodeo. He’s been a PRCA cardholder for 33 years. He recently took home the average title at the Ron Ross Memorial Steer Roping in Liberty Hill, Texas. The win added $9,042 to his season earnings, bumping him up to sixth in the PRCA | RAM World Standings and putting him in position to qualify for his first NFSR since 2004 . Zeroing In on NFSR

“It has been a while since I have been to (the NFSR). This year is pretty different because early on down in Andrews (Texas) at their stand-alone roping I won some money and I have been winning money at places. So, it has kind of been a different

year because I usually don’t win this type of money this early in the year.”

COWBOY GRILLE WITH TANNER BARTH

How’d you get your start in rodeo? Wade: Growing up my dad was a bull rider, he did a lot of the amateur and local bull riding up here in North Dakota. So, we were around it, but as far as rodeo cowboys go my brother and I are first generations. When did you know you could make a career out of the sport of rodeo? Wade: It probably wasn’t until my junior or senior year of college that I thought you know I have a burning desire to rodeo. I want to be a world champion and with that comes making a living doing it. So, I Wade Berg is beginning to make his name known in the ProRodeo ranks. The Chaffee, N.D., bull rider is coming off the biggest win of his young career at the Cowboy Channel Rookie Roundup presented by Resistol, April 30. Berg was the only cowboy to ride two bulls on his way to the title and added $11,278 to his cause in the running for the Rookie of the Year honor. He’s been riding in the PRCA since 2019, but just purchased his card at the beginning of this season.

WADE BERG

decided right then and there I was going to give it a go. Why did you decide bull riding would be your event?

Wade: I think being that my dad did it and honestly a lot of the driving factor for me right away was the money a guy can win doing it. I just fell in love with doing it and the adrenaline rush. The competition not only between man to man but man to animal was nothing like I had experienced before. What’s this season been like for you?

Wade: It has been pretty fun. It obviously could have gone a little better with winning more rodeos but winning the Rookie Roundup was definitely a big step and it gave me more confidence going into the summer. I just have to keep going and keep my nose to the grindstone. I’m excited to see what the rest of the season holds. Why did you decide to get your PRCA card this season? Wade: I stayed on my permit throughout college. Then once I got out of school, I decided to buy it and thought I better get going now since it’s something I can’t do my whole life. There was no better time than now. Did you do any other rodeo events growing up? Wade: I did all the events growing up besides bareback riding. I still do a little team roping every now and then when I can. Is there someone you look up to in the sport of rodeo?

Wade: I look up to a lot of the greats in the sport. Tuff Hedeman and Lane Frost from the bull riding side of things. I strive to be like a lot of the greats going right now as well because that’s somewhere I eventually want to be with my professional career. What’s your go to restaurant when you’re out on the road? Wade: If I were to sit down and have a good meal, I’d say my go to is probably either Texas Roadhouse or any other steakhouse out there. Do you have a favorite candy? Wade: I would have to say a Snickers bar, there’s nothing better than a good Snickers for me. What’s your favorite movie? Wade: If I had to pick a go to movie it would probably be Stepbrothers . I’m kind of a comedy guy when it comes to movies. What was the make and model of your first vehicle? Wade: It was a 2009 Chrysler 300. I burned that thing up and down the road going to rodeos. When you’re not rodeoing what do you enjoy doing for fun? Wade: I like to work out, so I try to stay in the gym as much as possible. I also love to ride horses just for the fun of it. What’s your favorite holiday? Wade: I would say Thanksgiving because you get to see the family and the food is usually amazing. What type of music do you like listening to? Wade: I’m kind of a multi-genre guy. I can listen to anything from Tupac to Toby Keith. I really like it all.

T he San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo on May 20 announced its educational commitment of $11.5 million for 2022. This year, the organization helped educate over 21,000 Texas students. Since 1984, the Rodeo has committed more than $243 million to serve its mission. Executive Director & CEO Cody Davenport had the following to say: “We are thrilled to help future generations of Texas youth achieve their educational goals,” Davenport said in a press release. “The Rodeo and our over 6,000 volunteers work diligently to generate as many funds for the youth of Texas as it is at the core of our organization and mission. This educational commitment would not be possible without the support of our community, sponsors and patrons that came back this year to visit our event. “The support of San Antonio, Bexar County and the State of Texas and all those that attend should feel a sense of pride that they are making a positive impact on our future.” San Antonio makes educational commitment of $11.5 million

Steer wrestler Dalton Massey gets key Redding Rodeo win Rewarding BY PATRICK EVERSON Special to ProRodeo Sports News S everal years ago, when Dalton Massey was in his early 20s, he came to Las Vegas during the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, just to check it out from the stands. REDDING RODEO REDDING, CALIF.

TOP MONEY WINNER Haven Meged ($7,107, tie down roping) BAREBACK RIDING

He hasn’t been back since. And he has his reasons. “I’ve been to Vegas a few times, but it’s been eight or nine years,” said Massey, 29. “I’ve just been saying I’m gonna go back when I make it.” And by “make it,” he means qualifying for the Wrangler NFR. If Massey can keep having days like he had at the Redding Rodeo on May 19, he won’t be waiting much longer. Competing on the first day in Redding, the steer wrestler clocked a time of 4.1 seconds on his first steer. He came back that night with a 4.4-second run. However, Redding runs for three days; since he competed onThursday, opening day, he then had to play the waiting game. “I was nervous. There were two more sets of guys to go, 15 Friday and 15 Saturday,” he said. “I was up in the first set, so you’ve just got to wait it out a couple of days. We went to Hayward (Calif ). We took off as soon as we got doneThursday night.” When the arena dust settled May 21, Massey’s first-round 4.1 stood up for first place and $1,668. And his 4.4 was good for second in the second round, and another $1,450. That’s $3,118 total, not a bad day’s work. But it got better. His two-round 8.5-second total won the Redding average, good for another $2,500. So Massey netted more than $5,600 in Redding, which was a stop on the NFR Playoff Series presented by PendletonWhisky. The Redding payday put Massey at $35,302 for the season, seventh in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings. That marks continued progress from Massey’s previously best-ever 2021 campaign, when the bulldogger finished 19th in the world, just four slots shy of NFR qualification. Massey said he’s aiming to keep it simple, rodeo by rodeo. Having $35K in winnings certainly helps. “I think it’s a good start. I’m just feeling confident and ready to go rodeoing this summer. My horses have been working good,” Massey said, while noting what it will take to keep rolling. “Get a little lucky, I guess. I just need to win every chance I get and do my job. Nothing crazy.”

LIBERTY HILL, TEXAS.

RON ROSS MEMORIAL STEER ROPING

Ora Taton wins Ron Ross Memorial competition Cashing In BY TRACY RENCK V eteran steer roper Ora Taton had never competed at the Ron Ross Memorial Steer Roping. His first appearance, May 14-15 in Liberty Hill, Texas was quite memorable.

The Rapid City, S.D., cowboy won the average with a 69.2-seconds time on five head. Taton earned $9,042 at the event, including $6,239 for capturing the average. “It was one of those deals where it was very unexpected,” said Taton, 52. “To travel from South Dakota to Texas and win something like that against the guys I was roping against, it was just unexpected. I had never been there before, and I had a little money won already in the rodeos (this season) and this is one of the bigger ones we get to go to. My wife and I decided to come down here and we are going to spend a few days between this one (May 14-15) and the next one at Liberty Hill (May 19-21).” With his windfall financial performance in Liberty Hill, Taton moved up to fifth in the world standings. He is a two-time qualifier for the National Finals Steer Roping in 2003 and 2004 and he won the average in 2003 when he finished a career-best fifth in the world standings. Most recently, Taton finished 20th in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings in 2020. That year he won the National Circuit Finals Steer Roping in Torrington, Wyo., beating newly-inducted ProRodeo Hall of Famer Trevor Brazile in the finals, along with four-time world champion Scott Snedecor. “It has been a while since I have been to (the NFSR),” Taton said. “I would love to go back to (the NFSR). But I don’t travel hard usually. I tell everybody if I don’t have money to go, I can’t go. If I don’t win something, I don’t get to play. This year is pretty different because early on down in Andrews (Texas) at their stand-alone roping I won some money and I got to go and I have been winning money at places. So, it has kind of been a different year because I usually don’t win this type of money this early in the year.” Taton was aboard his horse, Spur in Liberty Hill. “I believe he’s around 10 years old and he’s the only horse I have got right now,” said Taton, who won the NCFSR in 2020 in Torrington aboard that horse. “I bought him when he was around 5 years old. I was needing one and he looked like he would make one and my dad (Ralph) and I got him going and he’s turned into one we have liked. He’s one of those one in a million horses.” Although he has a solid spot in the world standings, Taton isn’t certain he’s going to make a push to make the 2022 NFSR. “Everybody tells you when you win money you have to keep going, but I have never done that,” Taton said. “It seems like I keep winning and everybody is telling me I need to keep going, but I’m not going to burn up a rig going everywhere and be gone, I just can’t do that. I’m going to go to a few of the others that I don’t normally go to like I would like to go to Pecos (Texas), and right after that is the Fourth of July run and there are a lot of ropings closer to my home (in Rapid City). But, I’m not going to burn the road up. I’m going to go and I’m going to have fun and be ready when I go.”

XTREME BRONCS MILES CITY, MONT.

Houston Brown shines at Miles City match Home Cookin’ PRCA XTREME BRONCS 2022 TOUR STANDINGS (Unofficial as of May 25)

BY TANNER BARTH H ouston Brown is no stranger to the World Famous Miles City (Mont.) Bucking Horse Sale Matched Xtreme Bronc Ride. In fact, his hometown is Miles City, and he grew up attending the bronc match nearly every year. Now, his name will forever be etched in the record books after he captured the event title, May 22. He said the win in his hometown is a dream come true. “This feels great, I grew up watching that match ever since I was a little kid, looking up to those guys,” said Brown, 23. “It’s kind of surreal to be able to win it. It’s special to have family and friends there to watch me do it. I don’t know if it’s really sunk in yet.” Brown was able to advance out of the 40-man long round with an 85.5-point ride on Burch Rodeo’s Bubble Bath. He then advanced to the finals where a matchup with J Bar J’s National Finals Rodeo bucking horse In The Lu awaited him. After a few helpful tips from fellow cowboys in attendance he had no problem rising to the occasion. Brown put together a 91.5-point ride to secure the title. It is the highest marked ride of his ProRodeo. “I had watched that horse quite a bit and knew what to expect,” he said. “I talked to a few guys there to figure out what I needed to do for the rein. After that it was kind of nod your head and see what happens. It nearly bucked me off at the end, but I was pretty happy they gave me the thumbs up at the end of it.” Heading into the weekend, Brown was sitting 49th in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings. He will no doubt jump up the standings after earning $9,392 in Miles City. He said a win like this gives him a major confidence boost headed into the summer run. “This win is going to do a lot for me. It’ll give me some good confidence going into the summer,” Brown said. “I’ll finally be able to take a little bit of a breath and add some money to my name. I hadn’t had a lot of luck the last month or so. It’s really good to get this one and finally get a win.” He said in the sport of rodeo it’s key to have a short memory, whether that’s after a good or bad ride. You never know when the ball will start rolling in your direction and he hopes this win will do just that for him. “You have to have that mentality because it’s a really long year,” he said. “If things aren’t going your way and you start getting down on yourself, it can snowball on you. You have to have a positive attitude because you never know when things can turn around.”
