Music director is a mainstay at Wrangler NFR IN HIS WORDS BENJE BENDELE
R ight now (Nov. 13), we’re in Las Vegas doing rehearsals with the announcers to get ready for the NFR. I go home tomorrow, and I’ll be back in the studio until Thanksgiving before we have to leave for the NFR. All year long, everybody has heard what I’ve done. When I get to the NFR, I want new, fresh stuff to introduce to people.
I learned a lot fromMr. Barnes and his family, as well. But it got to where the phone wasn’t ringing to announce, it was ringing to provide a sound system. I had bought a sound system as an announcer. They (rodeos) were calling me because they wanted the sound system; they already had an announcer. I was like, well, if it’s going to pay the bills then that’s what I’m going to I remember those early years (1990-91). There were already guys playing music. When I went in there and did it, I threw in sound effects, played “Another One Bites the Dust” when a guy was thrown off, played dance beats when a cowboy was getting ready. My goal is to have everybody tapping their toes, clapping their hands or tapping their arm on the armrest of their seat to keep that blood flowing. As I’m getting older and the numbers (of selections to the Finals) are climbing, it’s a better honor each year. I was more excited this year to get it than I was the first year. When I started doing this there wasn’t anybody else doing it. There’s more of a challenge to do better, to be better, to stay on top of my game with updated music, what’s current but keep in touch with what yesteryear had to offer. I still use some of the old tunes to appease the older generation. But as we move into the future we have to think about younger fans and what appeals to the younger- type music genre that’s going on right now. do. I made a career choice to start playing music.
Benje Bendele was selected to make his 19th consecutive appearance as the music director at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, Dec. 5-14. Before Bendele’s first time in 2001, the NFR had a band providing music. The 52-year-old from Dublin, Texas, provides not only music but plenty of sound effects, too. A former member of the PRCA Board of Directors, Bendele has been involved with rodeo in some capacity for more than three decades, attempting to be a contestant, moving on to being an announcer, providing sound systems and eventually becoming a music director. Like any talented professional, Bendele has changed with the times, evolving with the music, technology and whatever it takes to keep the fans coming back to the rodeo.
What scared me to death at the beginning of changing technologically was going digital. I bought my first digital console, and it sat in the box for a year before I took it out. I didn’t want to bust it out at a rodeo and I didn’t have time to set it up at home because I wasn’t home. I was finally able to pull it out and start playing with it and get in tune with the digital world of mixing consoles. Once I got into it and got it going, I kicked myself in the rear that I didn’t open the box as soon as I got it. It was one of those funny moments where I was like, ‘Gosh, this ain’t so bad.’ I started out as a rodeo announcer. I joined the PRCA and went to work for Bob Barnes and Barnes Rodeo. Back then there weren’t a bunch of music directors, there were just bands or a few people playing music. I was also working for Bad Company Rodeo and Mack Altizer. I got my training in music fromMack. I owe him a great debt of gratitude for all the things he taught me. With his ideas and my ideas, I evolved into what we’re doing today.

COWBOY GRILLE WITH TRACY RENCK
Caleb Anderson is a 29-year-old team roping heeler, who grew up in Mocksville, N.C., and now lives in Lipan, Texas. Anderson bought his PRCA card in 2010 and easily had the best year of his career in 2019, earning $72,390 and qualifying for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo after finishing 13th in the PRCA | RAM World Standings. Before 2019, Anderson’s best season was in 2018 when he earned $44,863. Anderson, who married his wife, Carrie, Oct. 12, is fired up to compete in the Thomas & Mack Center. He and heading partner Jake Cooper will team up at the Finals. This is Cooper’s third Wrangler NFR qualification.
What does it feel like to make the Wrangler NFR? Caleb: It sinks in every now and again. I don’t think it will really set in until I get inside (the Thomas & Mack Center). I’m really looking forward to Round 1. I’m going to be looking forward to any round, but I’m going to say the first one because it has been a dream to do it and get in that building and compete for 10 nights. How do you calm your nerves to compete at the Wrangler NFR? Caleb: I don’t know yet because I have never been there and I’m not sure what to expect. I’ve just been practicing and trying to get my fundamentals right. I want to be prepared for whatever comes my way at the Finals. We just need to try and do our best every round and see what happens. What was different this year in terms of your push to make the Wrangler NFR? Caleb: Last year was the first year I went start to finish (placing 32nd in the world standings). This year I made it a goal that I was going to rope start to finish again, and I knew what was going on and what I needed to do at the different venues, and what I needed to do at places and it worked out. What led you to team up with Jake Cooper?
CALEB ANDERSON
Caleb: Last year, after I got done roping with Cory Kidd V, I wasn’t sure what I was going to do. I knew I was going to winter rodeo, but I really didn’t have a partner. There were some jackpots around here in Lipan, where I live now, and Jake had split with his partner. Jake and I roped at some of those jackpots and really hit it off and did good, and we decided to rope this season together. What was it like earning $30,000 at RODEOHOUSTON this season? Caleb: We struggled a little early in the season, but we knew if we kept working at it, things would turn around for us. Then, we hit it big in Houston. (Ty Blasingame/Kyle Lockett won RODEOHOUSTON with a 5.0-second run in the championship shootout round; Cooper/Anderson placed second with a 5.3-second run in the Championship Shootout and earned $20,000 of their $30,000 at the rodeo). After Houston is when I knew we had a shot to qualify for the NFR. Thank God for Houston counting again (in the world standings). That gave us a big boost, and we just kept pecking along and ended up getting it done (qualifying for the Wrangler NFR). What’s your favorite restaurant? Caleb: I would say Texas Roadhouse. I get a steak, baked potato and sweet tea if they have it, if not, I get a Dr Pepper. If cellphones didn’t exist, how would that impact you? Caleb: It would not change things for me much at all. I don’t do much with social media at all anymore. I figured if I was on social media, I could be out roping a dummy or doing some kind of work. What’s the last concert you attended? Caleb: I went to a couple of concerts when I was in Houston at the rodeo, and honestly Cardi B was pretty dang cool to watch. I’m not really into that type of music, but her concert was a neat experience. What’s your favorite holiday? Caleb: I’m going to say Christmas. We get together with all the family and it is a good time for sure. You grew up in NASCAR country, did you ever consider the NASCAR path? Caleb: I never really was into NASCAR. It’s funny that you say NASCAR because my wife’s brother is married to Dale Earnhardt Sr.’s youngest daughter, Taylor. What prompted you to move to Texas?
Caleb: It was a better situation for my rodeo career. Now, we are living at a spot in Lipan at Luke Brown’s place, and he has been really great for me. He’s my Texas family. I couldn’t be more blessd to have him. (Brown, a team roping header, is a 12-time qualifier for the Wrangler NFR – 2008-19).
What do you enjoy doing when you are not rodeoing? Caleb: I like to hunt. My favorite thing to hunt is whitetail deer. I haven’t been hunting as much since I moved to Texas, but it is something I enjoy doing. What’s your favorite movie? Caleb: Lonesome Dove. That’s the coolest Western there is.

Bar T Rodeo’s Broken Arrow retiring after Wrangler NFR Headed to Pasture SHORT ROUND
B ar T Rodeo’s bull Broken Arrow, who has competed at the last four Wrangler National Finals Rodeos, will retire following competing in the 2019 Wrangler NFR in Las Vegas, Dec. 5-14. “He’s very quick and athletic, and he moves very easy,” said Jeff Flitton, the general manager of Bar T Rodeo. “It’s genetics, as well. He goes back to all the right stuff. It’s time (for him to retire). We need him to breed.” Flitton said the bull was born and raised on the Bar T Rodeo ranch in Chester, Utah, and will turn 10 in the spring. Flitton said Wesley

oldest daughter of Wrangler NFR barrel man John Harrison. Addie will be the other kid caster with Blayze Fallis for the Polaris Ranger Off Road Questions, which will appear in the NFR Preshow. She will also be in the ProRodeo Zone from 5:30-6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6. Celebrity Dale Brisby will be in the ProRodeo Zone every night from 5:30-6:30 p.m. (PT). At 5:30 p.m., he will be on stage, then from 6-6:30 p.m. he will be signing autographs at the RAM booth. Fans also will have a chance to receive Wrangler NFR ticket upgrades and Wrangler NFR tickets for the remaining rounds. In the 2019 regular season, Broken Arrow had seven outs with three qualified rides. Dalan Duncan had the highest-scored ride this season aboard Broken Arrow at 88 points to finish second at the Lion’s Dixie Roundup in St. George, Utah, Sept. 21. On Aug. 26, 2017, Tim Bingham had a 91.5-point ride on Broken Arrow to win the Golden Spike Rodeo in Tremonton, Utah. “I would rather have him (Broken Arrow) quit on top,” Flitton said. “He’s rideable, and that’s what cowboys like about him.” During Round 6 of the 2018 Wrangler NFR, Trey Benton III failed to make the whistle on Broken Arrow.
The ProRodeo Zone will be back at the 2019 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, Dec. 5-14. The ProRodeo Zone is just outside the Thomas & Mack Center. Before each round, fans can check out the shopping and entertainment options in the ProRodeo Zone, which opens at 4:30 p.m. (PT) before each performance and one hour after each performance. Admission is free to check out the vendors and the talent on the RAM PRCA main stage. For Wrangler NFR tailgaters, there are plenty of experiences at the ProRodeo Zone, like seeing Addie Harrison, who is the Silcox, Joe Frost and Shane Proctor won Wrangler NFR go-rounds on Broken Arrow. Broken Arrow, a big, long-legged, black bull with big horns, tips the scale around 1,600 pounds. “He’s never gotten gentle,” Flitton said. “Back in March of 2016 we were running him to get paperwork to go traveling for the summer and he hooked me and put me in intensive care for about a week. He broke my sternum and six ribs in two places apiece and punctured my lung. I recovered from that and we’re still buddies.”
