BY MATT NABER W ith a master’s degree in hand and a blossoming music career, Alberta bareback rider Kody Lamb could be doing anything with his life, but he’s chosen to make a go at professional rodeo with the PRCA and in Canada. “I’ve got a lot of irons in the fire,” Lamb laughed. Lamb’s first album, “Faster Feet and Brighter Lights,” was released in September 2017 and can be found on Spotify, Apple Music and most places music is available. “It’s gone over well,” said Lamb, 25. “Overall, I have close to half a million streams on Apple Music and Spotify. We kept it really in-house, literally. A buddy and I recorded it in the basement. I don’t have any marketing or do any touring. I’ve been focusing on rodeoing, and I’m really happy with it.” Lamb was in the winner’s circle for two iconic Stephenville, Texas, rodeos when each celebrated their 50th competition. In 2015, Lamb won the Tarleton Stampede in college, and in 2019 he won the 50th Annual Cowboy Capital of the World PRCA Rodeo. “I’ve ridden in that building a lot of times, and after a while you have to win something, I guess,” Lamb laughed. Lamb earned a bachelor’s in psychology in 2016 and a master’s in science and applied psychology in 2018 from Tarleton State University. Lamb won Stephenville’s ProRodeo on Pete Carr Pro Rodeo’s Lady’s Man with an 86.5-point ride for $2,166. Before 2019, Lamb’s best season was in 2016 when he won $31,020. This year, he more than doubled that amount. “Rodeo’s the most challenging thing I’ve ever done,” Lamb said. “I always have to keep improving myself to be successful. I’ve rodeoed since I was 9 or 10 years old, and I always craved more and wanted to climb the levels, and I haven’t been satisfied with anything I’ve done and always wanted more. And that’s what keeps me coming back.” Lamb ended the 2019 season unofficially in 20th in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings with $68,345 and ranked 10th in the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association with $16,601, qualifying him for the Canadian Finals Rodeo. “I had a lot of hurdles to jump over to compete in the pro level, so to finish where I did, I can’t be too down,” Lamb said. “I had a great year, all things considered.” The last couple of years were cut short for Lamb due to injuries, including tearing his biceps in his left (riding) arm in Livingston, Mont., last season. “Just staying healthy was a big accomplishment for me,” Lamb said. “Being here and doing it again was probably the biggest prize of all.”
