feels like such a tradition for the cowboys to do that. It is a great way to start off the NFR.” The PRCA Resistol Rookie of the Year Award has honored outstanding achievements of first year PRCAmembers and tomorrow’s rodeo legends for decades. Without a doubt, the long-standing relationship between Resistol and the PRCA has always been the “best all around.” “We do a custom hat for each rookie, a saddle for each rookie and rookie jackets,” Carpenter said. “That night in the arena (Round 6 at the NFR) they are presented a buckle and a check. About six years ago, we started the Resistol Rookie Celebration Luncheon, where we invite their families and key people in the industry, and it is usually about 200 people at the South Point. We have the luncheon always on Round 6 of the NFR because that’s Resistol Day. We do the luncheon and then we have about seven PRCA contestants, past world champions, people who speak and congratulate the rookies. It is a pretty cool day. “The coolest thing about that award is they can only win it once in their life. It is something they carry throughout their whole rodeo career. It is a neat program for us.” Resistol started in 1927 when a Michigan millionaire named E. R. Byer and a hatmaker named Harry Rolnick began manufacturing dress hats in Dallas under the new brand name “Resistol Hats.” “The name came about – Resistol – to resist all weather because as you know cowboys need a hat for protection for weather, for rain, and sun,” Carpenter said. Resistol provides a full line of felt and straw cowboy hats. Resistol manufactures their hats from fur to finish entirely in the U.S.A. – American made, Texas proud. Resistol has its main factory in Garland, Texas, and also has a felt factory in Longview, Texas. Each fur-felt hat goes through more than 200 steps under the company’s high standard quality control, thereby producing the most consistent and finest quality hats known. “We are the only hat manufacturer that makes our product 100 percent from fur to the finish product,” Carpenter said. Resistol also sponsors other PRCA rodeos like the NFR Open, the Playoffs, and the Judges’ Program. “The (PRCA) is absolutely our most important sponsorship,” Carpenter said. “It is a relationship we definitely want to maintain and move forward for the life of our brand.”
