RAM BADLANDS CIRCUIT FINALS RODEO Rookie steer wrestler wins Badlands Circuit Finals A Full Nelson BY SCOTT KANIEWSKI H eading into the final round of the RAM Badlands Circuit Finals Rodeo in Minot, N.D., Joe Nelson was in a good spot. He wasn’t sure how good because he hadn’t checked and didn’t want to know.

But as he backed into the box, the rookie steer wrestler found out exactly what kind of chance he had to win the RAMBCFR. “I knew Cameron (Morman) and I were close, and I knew Eli (Lord) had a little bit of a lead on us,” Nelson said. “But I didn’t know by how much, I didn’t go look. I didn’t want to know. Then right when I was riding in the box, the announcer said something about it. “I was talking to one of the guys that really helped me this year and he told me don’t worry about the average, worry about the round. Do your job and the average will work out for you.” Those words proved prophetic. Nelson finished in 4.4 seconds and wrapped up the circuit finals rodeo title to get into next year’s RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo in Kissimmee, Fla., April 2-4. “I’ve never been to Florida,” Nelson said. “I’m pretty excited. This deal in Minot is the biggest win I’ve ever had. I’m looking forward to that (RAM NCFR). Hopefully I’ll do some good down there.” The Watford City, N.D., cowboy finished second in the circuit. He also finished fifth in the PRCA | Resistol Rookie Standings. After finishing 2019 with $11,846, he’s planning on rodeoing much more in 2020. “I’ll circuit rodeo a little bit, but I think I’m going to try to go rodeoing and get as much won to get myself set up for 2021, so I can get into the bigger buildings,” he said. “I am going to go to full time next year. Right now, I’m an electrician in the oil field and I shoe horses.” Nelson pointed to his horse, Balls, and to his traveling partners Tyler Thorson, Evan Entze, River Voigt as reasons for his success. “I had a good year, but it’s also a big testament to horsepower,” he said. “I knew that I had a decent horse. He worked really good. … I also had some really great guys to travel with, which made us want to keep entering.” Nelson also wanted to thank a special couple for his strong season. “Thanks to my folks (dad, Tim, and mom, Lisa),” he said. “They went to as many circuit rodeos as they could get to, including Minot. My folks were there all four rounds. They were pretty dang excited.”
