Warren captures win at Kitsap Stampede BY BRADY RENCK Special to ProRodeo Sports News T raditional sports did not appeal to Laramie Warren. He doesn’t come from a generational rodeo family, but he was around the rodeo. His mom, a former barrel racer, served as a veterinarian for the PRCA event in Claremore, Okla., where Warren grew up. “From when I was little, it felt like I always had a rope in my hand,” Warren said. “I wasn’t into other sports, so rodeo was something that I started doing and it all kind of worked out.” It began with mutton busting, then grew into a passion. At 25, Warren’s career is gaining traction during his third year on the circuit. He demonstrated that promise at the Kitsap Stampede in Bremerton, Wash., claiming the steer wrestling crown with a time of 3.4 seconds at Thunderbird Arena. “It was a very competitive field. I am trying to win as much as I can and finish this season out strong like everybody out here,” said Warren, who edged out Stephen Culling (3.5) and Ringo Robinson (3.6) for the top prize. “I drew a really good steer. I was fortunate. When you draw a steer like that, you have a chance. It all worked out.” Warren honed his craft in college at Northeastern Oklahoma then later at Southeastern Oklahoma State. Success at that level provided a path to the professional ranks. He has yet to reach his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, but that goal exists. For now, he’s logging reps, gaining valuable experience with every stop. The rodeos in the Northwest provide the type of challenge that makes a cowboy better. “It was awesome, a very cool rodeo. Getting up to the peninsula, it was good hospitality. Really well run,” Warren said. “I am focused on finishing strong and seeing how much money I can win over this final month of the season. I had to come back to the circuit rodeos during the season. But now, I want to finish this out well.” The rodeo bug bit Warren. He enjoys riding, and the inherent difficulty of jumping off a blurry-fast horse onto stock. He has produced strong showings recently at places like the Lea County PRCA Rodeo in Lovington, N.M., winning with an 8.0-second time on two-head, and a fourth-place finish at the Ogden (Utah) Pioneer Days. “I really like the competition and the competitiveness required. And the lifestyle that it brings is special,” said Warren, who lives in Adair, Okla. “It brings you to a lot of new places around the country. You get to meet a lot of new people and great people and travel the country. There’s really nothing like it.”
