2019 Pendleton Whisky Let ’er Buck Stock of the Year Awards Each year, the top ProRodeo cowboys in each roughstock event vote for the top bucking horses and bulls. Contestants vote in the fall, and the winning animals are acclaimed at the PRCA’s annual awards banquet in December just before the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Stock contractors are proud of these top buckers. They invest heavily in purchases and in breeding programs, feed and medical care for their bucking stock for years, fostering animals’ growth and development until they are ready to perform at rodeos. In 2010, Pendleton Whisky expanded its ProRodeo involvement by sponsoring the stock awards, which are now known as the PendletonWhisky Let ‘er Buck Stock of the Year Awards. PendletonWhisky provides cash prizes for the top three animals in each event and funds the stipends for stock contractors who provide bucking stock for the Wrangler NFR.

“Smoke” owner Brad Lands Smoke hit the ProRodeo scene in the spring of 2018 and now at 12 years old, the 15.1 hands tall, 1,200-pound American Quarter Horse gelding has caught the eye of ropers and spectators alike by winning the San Antonio (Texas) Stock Show & Rodeo. Team roping headerTate Kirchenschlager made hisWrangler NFR debut with Smoke in 2019.“It feels good to make the Finals, but to get the Horse of theYear award with a horse that you worked with through his whole career feels good to have one to win it,” Kirchenschlager said. DT Sugar Chex Whiz “Sugar” owner Dixon Flowers QH On her first year of ProRodeo competition, this 1,100-pound, 9-year-oldmare proved that good things come in small packages, standing at 14.2 hands tall. Sugar took Billie Jack Saebens to the winners’circle at several rodeos in 2019, including the Rooftop Rodeo (Estes Park, Colo.), Lawton (Okla.) Rangers Rodeo and the Gooding (Idaho) Pro Rodeo.“She’s easy, adapts to every situation and is as good in smaller setups as she is in longer deals,” Saebens said.“That’s a hard transition to make, but she’s super adaptable andwill do whatever you need her to do.”

High Valor “Valor” owner Dona Kay Rule
After winning the Caldwell (Idaho) Night Rodeo, Dona Kay Rule said it had been a blessed season and the blessings continued when she learned that her 10-year old sorrel gelding High Valor had been voted as the 2019 Purina Horse of the Year presented by AQHA. Valor, out of Rare High by Valiant Hero, carried Rule to her first Wrangler NFR qualification.“He wasn’t a barrel horse when I got him,”she said.“He was just a broke gelding. I knewhe was really, really powerful, and I brought him along slow. When he realized what I was asking him to do…man, he went to work.”
For the second year in a row, Big Time is the Tie-down Roping Horse of the Year. This 16-year-old American Quarter Horse gelding brings a solid and consistent ride every time. Big Time didn’t have any rodeo experience whenMilligan bought himfive years ago in Duncan, Okla., but in 2019 he took the 22-year-old cowboy to his first Wrangler NFR. “Not much really changed after winning it last year, but it gives you confidence knowing your horse is good enough to go anywhere and win,”Milligan said.

John Justin Committeeperson of the Year
Justin Boots, in recognizing the hundreds of thousands of hours of work that rodeo committee members around the country donate to putting on their local rodeos, has long made a practice of honoring 125 outstanding volunteers around the country through its John Justin Standard of the West program. PRCA rodeos vote on the recipient of Justin’s national award for a committeeperson whose dedication represents the deeds of those thousands of volunteers. In 2019 that award went to Susan Thomas of the Central (Casper) Wyoming Fair and Rodeo. Winners of the John Justin Committeeperson of the Year Award include: 1990 Philip Diehl, Pawhuska Elks Rodeo, Pawhuska, Okla. 1991 Cletus Schenk, Red River PRCA Rodeo, Wichita Falls, Texas 1992 Duane Mahlum, Wolf Point (Mont.) I think it is important to share this incredible gift.”Thomas has worked with Central Wyoming Fair and Rodeo for 10 years, on the administrative side.“We have great volunteers, and what I enjoy best about what I do is community,”she said.“Wyoming is one big community, and I like being involved.”Thomas was born and raised in Barnum, Wyo. Thomas’ late husband, Craig, served as a U.S. Senator fromWyoming from 1995-2007. He passed away in June 2007 at age 74. Donita Barnes Lifetime Achievement Award
The PRCA award honors contract personnel (such as announcers, bullfighters, clowns, specialty acts, secretaries and timers) who have been PRCA members for at least 15 years and have committed their lives to the rodeo industry, yet received little recognition for their commitment and contributions. The nomination process was open; an external selection committee chose five finalists, and PRCA contract personnel members voted among the finalists. The posthumous recipient of the inaugural Contract Personnel Lifetime Achievement Award was long-time PRCA secretary Donita Barnes, wife of ProRodeo Hall of Fame inductee and PRCA stock contractor Bob Barnes, and mentor to thousands of contestants and others involved with Barnes rodeos. The PRCA renamed the award in her honor in 2012.

A lifetime of commitment to the rodeo industry earned husband and wife Roy and Virginia Honeycutt the 2019 PRCA Donita Barnes Contract Personnel Lifetime Achievement Award. Virginia, the longtime matriarch of the rodeo-oriented Honeycutt family, passed away Dec. 1, 2019 at age 76. Roy accepted the award at the 2019 PRCA Awards Banquet in Las Vegas before passing away on March 25, 2020 at the age of 82. The couple met in 1963 and were married 55 years. Roy and Virginia started the Honeycutt Rodeo Company in 1976 in Alamosa, Colo. They traveled across the country and the world producing rodeos. Their son, Jerry, now heads the Honeycutt Rodeo Company.“I don’t know what to say,”Roy said.“This is emotional. It is great to receive this honor. This is a big deal.”Since 1976, Honeycutt Rodeo has been one of the few rodeo stock contractors to have been a part of every National Finals Rodeo. Four generations of horses can be seen running the high plains of Honeycutt Rodeo Company in Alamosa.“I teared up this morning when I found out my mom and dad were receiving this award,”Jerry said.“This is cool. They spent their lifetime in the rodeo business, and it was good to them, and they get recognized with this award. We are elated that they are getting this award.”

Linderman Award
Focusing on improving his steer wrestling skills paid off for Josh Frost in 2019. The Randlett, Utah, cowboy earned $2,067 in that event, $119,561 in bull riding and $8,281 in tie-down roping, making him the runaway winner for the 2019 Linderman Award. “It has been one of my goals for a while to win the Linderman,”said Frost, 24. “It’s a prestigious award. I have (tie-down) roped my whole life, but I was never able to qualify (for the Linderman) with my steer wrestling. But I practiced a bunch this winter and it made a difference, then I qualified for steer wrestling in the summer.” To be eligible for the Linderman Award, a cowboy must win at least $1,000 in three events, including one roughstock and one timed event. Josh’s biggest payday in bull riding came at the San Antonio Stock
Show and Rodeo when he after earning $22,500. He also had strong performances at the Farm-City Pro Rodeo in Hermiston, Ore., and the Reno (Nev.) Rodeo, earning $6,303 and $6,282, respectively. Josh clinched his qualification for the Linderman Award in steer wrestling when he earned $1,290 by finishing fourth with a 4.1-second run at the Golden Spike Rodeo in Tremonton, Utah. “Winning this award is not something very many people can do,”Frost said.“You really have to be a cowboy to not only compete, but to win money on both ends of the arena.” The distinguished PRCA award is named after ProRodeo Hall of Fame cowboy Bill Linderman. Linderman won six world championships, two in the all-around (1950 and1953), two in saddle bronc riding (1945 and 1950), one in bareback riding (1943) and one in steer wrestling (1950). KyleWhitaker won the last four-consecutive Linderman Awards and has received a PRCA-record of 10 in his career. Frost is the second member of his family to capture the honor, as his older brother, Joe Frost, captured it in 2014. In 2019, Josh made his Wrangler National Finals Rodeo debut in bull riding, thanks to finishing 10th in the 2019 regular season with $119,561.
