DIRECTOR’S CUT SCOTT KANIEWSKI September push will send cowboys to Thomas & Mack T he ProRodeo season has set up September for a final month like no other. This isn’t last year’s Wrangler National Finals Rodeo race. But that’s been evident for the last several months. As predicted, the races to this point have been tight and RUSH TO RICHES See Page 48 of this edition to read about competitors racing to make the Wrangler

National Finals Rodeo over the final month of the season. We’ve broken down races in all events to give fans a feel for the competitive nature of this season’s race to Vegas.

competitive. With so many rodeos happening every weekend, cowboys have been spread across the country, allowing for more money to be won at more rodeos, spreading the wealth. Cowboys throughout the association are quick to point out that with not everyone at the same rodeo like they were last year because of limited options due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the playing field has been spread out. That has led to races for the final few spots in all events being incredibly close. When this edition goes online, there will be 27 days left in the 2021 regular season. With more than 100 events scheduled over the last 30 days, the money is plentiful. Among the seven events at the NFR, only one event has a greater differential of $4,000 between 15th and 17th in the standings. That race is in bull riding, where one rider can clean up an entire event’s payout to take a huge jump in the PRCA | RAM World Standings. The closest race is in team roping heeling, where $828 separates 15th and 17th. And Nos. 16 and 17 shouldn’t just have their eyes on No. 15, they should be shooting for top 13, at least. The difference between 17th and 13th is $2,002. That’s one rodeo, and at some bigger rodeos, that’s not even first-place money. A third- or fourth-place finish could jump a cowboy multiple spots. Those big rodeos are out there, too. The ProRodeo Tour

presented by PendletonWhisky boasts seven events still to happen, including Filer, Idaho, Ellensburg, Wash., andWalla Walla, Wash., all concluding over Labor Day weekend. Puyallup, Wash., and Pendleton, Ore., are still on the docket too. The coup de grâce comes on the season’s final weekend when the Top 24 cowboys in the ProRodeo Tour presented by PendletonWhisky convene in Salinas, Calif. There, they’ll be competing for a share of $1 million and a chance to make significant strides in trying to qualify for the Wrangler NFR. After the Finals’ one-year detour to Arlington, Texas, last year, the NFR is back on schedule to return to theThomas & Mack Center. The cowboys are eager to get there. The ones who’ve never been to Las Vegas – including those who made their first NFR appearance in Arlington – want to experience the feel of the crowd all but sitting on top of them as they hit the arena floor. And the veterans looking to make another trip to their favorite rodeo are anxious to return.

COWBOY GRILLE WITH TANNER BARTH

How’d you get your start in rodeo? Jack: When I was 3 years old, we went to a little local rodeo. I got lucky, and they put me on my first sheep. Ever since then, rodeoing and riding livestock is all I’ve ever wanted to do, to be honest with you. When did you know you could make a career out of the sport of rodeo? Jack: I probably started to recognize I had some real talent around the age of 15 or 16. I started going to open bull rides and started making a little bit of money. I figured if I could make money then I would give it a go when I turned 18. Why did you decide bull riding would be your event? Jack: When I was little I kind of did everything. After I started riding sheep, I got into some of the timed events and roped. As the years went on, I decided I had a lot more fun riding bulls and got a different feeling from it versus everything else. I wanted that feeling to stick around, I guess. What’s this season been like for you? Jack: It’s been great, but it’s been an eye-opener at the same time for me. I’ve never rodeoed as hard as I have this summer. It’s feeling a like no other when you’re on the road chasing a dream. It’s been unreal and I’ve been blessed enough to be doing good and being able to keep going up and down the road. Why did you decide to join the PRCA straight out of high school? Jack Gilmore purchased his PRCA permit in 2020 at the age of 18. Now in his first full season of rodeo, he’s starting to make his name known in the sport of bull riding. Earlier this season he won the Rodeo of the Ozarks in Springdale, Ark., June 26. This year the Ironton, Mo., cowboy has earned $18,465 on his permit. He plans to buy his PRCA card before the start of next season.

JACK GILMORE

Jack: I’ve always been one for anything, if you’re going to do it, go do it. I kicked around a couple of options, but it’s always been every bull rider’s dream to come out of those yellow bucking chutes in Las Vegas. So, I thought why wait, if I can make it now, I’m going to make it now. Is there someone you look up to in the sport of rodeo? Jack: When I was little J.B. Mauney was the best there was, and I’ve always looked up to him. Now, I’ve actually had the chance to compete at some of the same rodeos as him. It’s been pretty darn cool. What’s your go-to restaurant when you’re out on the road? Jack: It would probably have to be Buffalo Wild Wings. My go to is the honey barbecue boneless wings. Do you have a favorite candy? Jack: I don’t think I have a favorite. I’m not too picky when it comes to candy, I kind of like it all. What’s your favorite movie?

Jack: I’d have to say “8 Seconds,” that’s probably my all-time favorite. I still watch it all the time. When you’re not rodeoing, what do you enjoy doing for fun? Jack: I enjoy hunting and being outdoors when I

can. We also have a family-run feed yard, and so I’m usually helping my dad run it when I’m not rodeoing.

What’s your favorite holiday? Jack: Christmas, for sure. I really enjoy the meaning of it – the presents have never been very important to me. I’m a big believer and I like to give him credit for everything. What type of music do you like listening to? Jack: I’m not picky at all when it comes to music. I like it all, country, rock and just about everything that’s out there.

HOT TAKES Darnell cashes in at Pueblo Rookie tie-down roper Cody Darnell might not have won the Colorado State Fair & Rodeo in Pueblo, but he did take home more money than anyone at the rodeo. Darnell earned $4,503 after taking third in the first round, tying for third in the second round and finishing second in the average. “That was great for me,” Darnell said. “I just wanted to do my job and complete the task at hand. I knew I drew good and was just trying to stay out of my own way. I’m just glad we have good rodeos like that in my circuit.” Not only did the win help the 24-year-old from Nebraska climb to 31st in the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $40,465, it also has him third in the PRCA | Resistol Rookie Standings and first in the Mountain States Circuit. TIME CAPSULE BOBBY JOE SKOAL Horse Heaven 30 years later,

Bobby Joe Skoal’s NFR performance still one to recall BY TRACY RENCK S ometimes piecing together facts from 30 years ago can be a difficult process. That wasn’t the case for stock contractor Kirsten Vold when talking about Harry Vold Rodeo Company’s saddle bronc horse Bobby Joe Skoal. Bobby Joe Skoal was named the National

Finals Rodeo top saddle bronc horse in 1991. He dumped Bud Longbrake in Round 3 before Billy Etbauer had an 86-point ride on him to win Round 10. “He’s the only one I raised from birth that has won awards,” Harry Vold said in the 1991 year-end edition of ProRodeo Sports News . Harry Vold was Kirsten’s father and a member of the ProRodeo Hall of Fame. He passed away in March 2017 at the age of 93. Kirsten remembers that 1991 NFR and the pride her father had of Bobby Joe Skoal. “Dad raised him, and he was the saddle bronc horse of the year for three years in a row, and he was the only one to do that out of anything dad had raised,” Kirsten said. “Dad had other multi-year horses of the year, but he never did have a horse he raised win horse of the year three years in a row like Bobby Joe Skoal. That’s the reason he’s always been so special to us because he raised him. He didn’t purchase him from anybody else. “He was a very special animal to this family. He bucked a long time and we retired him in Colorado Springs in the early 2000s. He lived into his late 20s.” The 1991 NFR was no fluke for Bobby Joe Skoal. The horse was named the PRCA Saddle Bronc Horse of the Year in 1991-93. “Bobby Joe Skoal was very honest and true,” Kirsten said. “Whenever they talked to bronc riders about him, they also talked about how he just bucked hard and was really strong. He didn’t have any ducks or dives or have any tricks to him. “He just bucked really hard and was an honest bronc. I had a steer wrestler tell me one time that it was hardly fair for anybody to draw that

PRCA ProRodeo photo Billy Etbauer had an 86-point ride on Harry Vold Rodeo Company’s Bobby Joe Skoal to win Round 10 of the 1991 National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. Bobby Joe Skoal was chosen as the top saddle bronc horse of that year’s NFR.

horse because he just stands out in the crowd. He was a star and looked showy. Unless you got bucked off, you were going win the rodeo on him.” Despite Bobby Joe Skoal’s status, he blended in with the rest of the rodeo company’s horses. “He knew he was a star, but he hauled with all the other horses, and he didn’t get any special treatment,” Kirsten said. “He didn’t have his own special stall or a special pen or anything like that. He ran with all the bucking horses just like they all do. He just did his own thing. He wasn’t gentle, like where you could feed him treats, but he wasn’t wild. He was just a good ol’ bronc. “One year Ty Murray had him, back in the time when Colorado Springs, (Colo.), Dodge City (Kan.), and Cheyenne were consecutive (rodeos), he drew him three weeks in a row because he was in the short round at those rodeos.” Kirsten said Bobby Joe Skoal has been cloned. “Dr. Gregg Veneklasen at Timber Creek Veterinarian Hospital (in Canyon, Texas) took a patch of skin off him,” Kirsten said. “They cloned him about five years ago and he’s a stud there at the clinic, and I would say at least 25 to 30 different stock contractors throughout the PRCA have bred to that clone of Bobby Joe Skoal.”

SHORT ROUND

B areback rider Tim O’Connell’s quest to win his fourth world title is on hold for the time being. O’Connell confirmed to ProRodeo Sports News he will be sidelined the remainder of the regular season after suffering a tailbone injury in Lovington, N.M., Aug. 5. “It’s something that’s been hurting really bad the last couple of weeks,” said O’Connell, a three-time PRCA World Champion (2016-18). “I broke my tailbone, or my coccyx to be exact. At first, we were going to try and go the adjustment route, but once my X-rays were out there, they decided it was something that probably needed to be removed.” O’Connell, 29, is first in the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $156,056. He underwent a coccygectomy (removal of the tailbone) on Aug. 24 in Dallas. “I was set up with one of the best and most trusted guys in the country to do this surgery and right here in Dallas,” O’Connell said. “So, tomorrow morning (Aug. 24), Dr. Dossett is going to go in and remove my tailbone. “It was one of those things that really couldn’t wait. It became dangerous to not only my health in the sport but my overall health. It was something that had to be done, I really had no other option.” O’Connell said having surgery at this point will allow him to compete at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo scheduled for Dec. 2-11 in Las Vegas. “That’s not really a goal, that’s when I’m going to be back regardless,” O’Connell said. “I’ll be back for the opening round of the NFR. My plans haven’t changed for winning a gold buckle this year. I’ll have four months to take off, recover, get myself ready, and we can throw down in Vegas.” Three-time world champion Tim O’Connell out until NFR Sidelined

Crowder, who was a timer at the National Finals Rodeo in 2001, had been involved as a PRCA secretary and timer since 1974. She was the secretary at the 2020 National Finals Steer Roping in Mulvane, Kan. “She grew up in Dallas, and then after that we moved all over,” said Shawna Ray, Brenda’s daughter and the 2019 PRCA Timer of the Year. “Her dad, Bill (Crowder), was a roper, and her mom, Pat, was a rodeo secretary. That’s how she got involved with rodeo. What she loved most about the rodeo business was all the guys. She loved every one of them. She

“We get to travel all over the country working rodeos together,” Brenda said before working the Jr. NFR in June. “This is the best life that I can imagine living. We have so much fun together, and I wouldn’t trade my life for anything.” Brenda worked the RAM Texas Circuit Finals Rodeo for years and was most recently working as a secretary and timer for Stace Smith Pro Rodeos.
