MANAGER’S MESSAGE TRACY RENCK Time is now to make push to qualify for Wrangler NFR T he 2024 ProRodeo season is heading down the homestretch. The calendar has flipped to August and crazy as it seems the regular season will be completed by Sept. 30. Contestants are scratching and clawing to find
any way possible to qualify for the coveted Wrangler National Finals Rodeo – the place where gold buckle dreams come true. This year’s NFR is scheduled for Dec. 5-14 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. The prize money available to NFR contestants
this year will be $12,501,505 – and is increasing thanks to the contract extension recently signed by Las Vegas Events and the PRCA to keep the NFR in Vegas through 2035. Now is certainly the time for contestants to make the NFR push. Once August rolled around some cowboys called it a season because they knew making the NFR wasn’t a possibility this year. The key for NFR-hopeful cowboys is availability and consistency. Those are variables they can control. Usually when a cowboy can stay healthy and is fundamentally doing things the right way time and time again, they will be rewarded. The possible NFR qualifier storylines are abundant. Here’s just a sample size: • Will reigning PRCA

Bull Riding World Champion Ky Hamilton, whose season has been sabotaged by injuries, rally and go on a hot streak and qualify to compete in Vegas and defend his crown? • Will Resistol Rookie and rising star bareback rider/bull rider Wacey Schalla qualify for the NFR in one or

slate before the Cinch Playoffs in Puyallup, Wash., (Sept. 5-8) and the Cinch Playoffs Governor’s Cup, Sept. 26-28 in Sioux Falls, S.D. Happening the last week of the rodeo season, the Cinch Playoffs Governor’s Cup will once again include the top four finishers from each event from the Cinch Playoffs in Puyallup, and the top eight out of the Playoff Series season standings. The Governor’s Cup will pay out more than $1.3 million in three days. In 2023, the inaugural event was a fight to the finish. The 2023 Cinch Playoffs Governor’s Cup win for bareback rider Mason Clements earned him a $28,750 payday and propelled him to his first appearance at the NFR since 2020. The action in rodeo arenas across the country is heating up just like the weather. Sit back and enjoy and check prorodeo.com to see who is out and who is in their quest to claim an NFR bid.
both of his events to make a run at capturing the all-around gold buckle. That would be historic since he would be the second cowboy to ever win the coveted all-around gold buckle as a rookie. • How much money will cowboys have to earn in each respective event to make the Top 15? In 2023, only 10 of the 119 NFR qualifiers (Stetson Wright qualified in two events last year) – four in steer wrestling; one team roping header; and five team roping heelers – earned less than $100,000 in the regular season. The money is still out there for cowboys on the outside of the NFR looking in with countless rodeos still remaining on the schedule. Specifically, there are 16 Playoff Series Rodeos remaining on the

COWBOY GRILLE WITH TANNER BARTH
How’d you get your start in rodeo? Tyler: My dad (Clay) and my whole family have rodeoed forever really. It was something I was born into. My dad has rodeoed as a pro for more than 25 years now and made the NFR 20 times. So, I’ve grown up around it since I was a little kid. When did you know you could make a career out of rodeo? Tyler: I think it’s something I’m still trying to figure out. Since I’ve been a little kid it’s something that I wanted to do. So, I figured I better give it a try and see what happens. Why did you decide team roping would be your event? Tyler: I honestly don’t know, I guess I’ve always grown up with a rope in my hand. I don’t really like the other events to be honest. Team roping is the only event that I like. Did you do any other rodeo events growing up? Tyler: Team roping is the only event that I have done. I kind of want to try calf roping, but I know I would be terrible at it. I’m way too slow for that. Why did you decide to get your PRCA card this season? Tyler: I just felt like it was best if I bought my card this year. That would allow me to get into the winter rodeos for next year and give myself a better chance of making the finals in 2025. What have you learned during your Resistol Rookie season? Tyler: I’ve learned that you do a ton of driving and are always looking at what rodeos to enter. You have to learn to put misses behind you. I’ve had a lot of those this year but I’m starting to become a little more consistent with my catching. Who’s someone you look up to in the rodeo business right now? Tyler: I really looked up to my dad when I was a kid and still do. Then there are guys like Kaleb Driggers and Dustin Egusquiza. I watch what they do and try to learn from them. My dad is always in my corner helping me out as well. What’s one rodeo you want to win before your career is over? Tyler: It would probably have to be Salinas (Calif.) even though the rodeo is not really my style. That would be a cool one to win because my dad has won it so many times. I’d like to win that one. What’s your favorite movie? Tyler: To be honest with you I don’t really watch movies or TV really. I probably spend a little too much time on my phone. What’s your go-to restaurant before or after a rodeo? Tyler: At this point it would probably have to be McDonald’s. It feels like that’s all I’ve ate this summer. What’s the first vehicle you drove? Tyler: It was a dually 2022 Ford F-350. Do you have a favorite candy? Tyler: That’s an easy one for me. My favorite is definitely the regular M&M’s. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not rodeoing? Tyler: I play a little golf when I can. I’m not very good at it but I try. I also like practicing on the roping dummy as well. What’s your favorite holiday? Tyler: It would have to be Christmas. I like celebrating Jesus and everything that goes along with the holiday. What type of music do you like listening to? Tyler: Country music is my favorite. I listen to a little bit of everything. I’m a pretty simple guy to be honest with you. Tyler Tryan, the son of 20-time Wrangler NFR qualifier Clay Tryan, is making his own mark on the sport at just 18 years old. As of Aug. 5, Tyler leads the Resistol Rookie of the Year race as a team roping header. In just under five months, he has earned $45,670, which included a first-place finish at the Livingston (Mont.) Roundup Rodeo during the Cowboy Christmas run. The young cowboy sits inside the top 35 in the PRCA | RAM World Standings.

hamstring injury suffered at the end of last season is still hindering him and ultimately led him to make the difficult decision to end his 2024 campaign. “Many of you have been wondering where I’ve been or what I’ve been doing,” Wright announced in a video posted to his social media account. “My 2024 season is officially over. There’s only really one reason. I’m just not physically ready yet. “When I first had this injury, I said I would be back when I’m 100 percent. So, I’m going to stay true to myself because at the end of the day when you aren’t ready you can’t lie to yourself.” The Beaver, Utah, cowboy was sidelined

Wright hoped to return to competition at the beginning of the summer run, but it wasn’t in the cards this season. “Nobody wants to sit out a full season when it’s something
you’ve always wanted to do growing up,” Wright said. “I’m going to attack the rest of this recovery process just like I do every time I get on a bucking horse or a bull. I’m going to push myself but also be cautious knowing it takes time. My hope is to be back by Denver to kick off the 2025 season.”

Ziebell’s work at the Mid Western Rodeo didn’t go unnoticed as it was selected the PRCA’s Great Lakes Circuit Best Medium Rodeo of the Year in 2007-15 and 2017, 2019 and 2021-23. “I never heard anybody say anything mean about Pete,” Zinser said. “He was easy to get along with, and he was easy with the contestants. He would put out fires before they even had a flame. He was just a great individual. He team roped and was just a cowboy. Roger Mooney (a multiple-time NFR announcer) has been the announcer at the Mid Western Rodeo for years. “He wasn’t afraid to hire the best people in the PRCA to do his rodeo. He loved rodeo with all his heart and soul and his loss will be huge.” Jesse Knudsen, a Manawa, Wis., native, and former PRCA saddle bronc rider, bull rider, bullfighter and now an announcer, knew Ziebell for more than three decades “Pete was a great guy who always wanted to help everybody out who needed help,” Knudsen said. “He loved his family, and he loved that rodeo in Manawa. Cook pairs with The Black Tie in win Big Payday CHEYENNE FRONTIER DAYS
BY ALEX DODD T here was no question what horse every stock across the board, but Sankey Pro Rodeo & Phenom Genetics’ The Black Tie drew warranted attention. The 2022 PRCA Horse of the Year contributed to Ryder Sanford’s winning ride last year in Cheyenne. This year, Logan Cook benefitted from the luck of the draw and won the short round with another 90-point trip on The Black Tie. “For me and the other 12 guys in the field, that’s the one everybody wanted,” Cook said. “You know that if you do your job, you can win.” Cook knew what The Black Tie would bring to the arena. But in the hours leading up to the out, he had to fight off nerves. “It was kind of a nervous and testy afternoon about four o’clock,” Cook joked. “Just because you knew that you had the one to win it on.” Cook’s winning ride on The Black Tie secured $8,135. It marked his first win and his first trip to the short round at Cheyenne. “It’s great, and Cheyenne pays a lot of money,” he said. “But the main thing is that it’s one of the most prestigious rodeos. I’ll remember it forever… It’s pretty cool to walk away from here with a buckle. And I’ll keep it forever and have memories to look back on.” Cook opened Frontier Days with a 77.5-point ride to tie for fourth in the second performance and secure $294. He finished second in the second semifinal with an 85.5-point ride to pull in $2,299 and advance to the finals. “I’ve never made the short go here before,” he said. “I’ve won some money but never made the short go…I think this one is on everybody’s list.” Parker Fleet finished as the runner-up with 89 points on Brookman Rodeo’s Ragin Lunatic. Kolby Wanchuck and Gus Gaillard tied for third with 88.5 points each. Cook sat 17th in the PRCA | RAM World Standings as of Aug. 8 with $78,317. “The last couple of years I’ve gotten into a lot of the bigger rodeos and had a chance,” Cook said. “I’ve won a little bit of money at them but never had a big win besides Red Bluff (Calif.) and here. So, this feels great.” The big payday in Cheyenne puts him in the mix to make a push for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo appearance. “Hopefully, I can keep the ball rolling and pick up a few more big checks,” he said. saddle bronc rider wanted on championship Sunday at Cheyenne Frontier Days. CHEYENNE FRONTIER DAYS
Mayfield fulfills dream Jackie Jensen photo Tie-down roper Shad Mayfield won Cheyenne Frontier Days for the first time in his career with a 9.8-second time in the finals.
Shad Mayfield came close to winning Cheyenne Frontier Days a couple of times in his career but always hoped to take a victory lap at Frontier Park and etch his name alongside the legends of rodeo’s past. Mayfield fulfilled that dream and added another signature victory to his resume with a 9.8-second run to win the tie-down roping title in front of a packed house on July 28. “I was five or six years old with a rope in my hand under the bleachers over there,” Mayfield said. “So, I’ve been coming to this rodeo for a long time. I feel like a veteran over here. It’s special to get the win after coming here for all of these years.” The three-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier and 2020 PRCA World Champion cruised through the loaded field to finish on top. He won the sixth performance with a 10.8-second run to pick up $2,000 and topped the first semifinal with a 10.1-second run to nab $5,200.
“It’s one of the coolest, unique rodeos I’ve been to,” Mayfield said. “But I’ve had really good luck all week long, drew really good calves, and just took advantage of it.” Mayfield entered the rodeo atop the PRCA | RAM World Standings in tie-down roping and the all-around. Torn labrums in both hips limited Mayfield over the last few weeks, though. And other cowboys used the opportunity to close the gap. “It’s been a hard summer battling some of the injuries that I’ve had, and I told myself that after Cheyenne, I was going to go home and take a little break,” Mayfield said. “Because of what I’ve been going through, I let some guys close in on me in the standings. So, it helps to be able to get the win before I go home for a little rest.” Chet Weitz finished second in 12.5 seconds, and Dontae Pacheco came in third with a 12.9-second run.
