CASTLE ROCK, COLO.
Allen continues standings climb with win Vegas View DOUGLAS COUNTY FAIR & RODEO
BY JADE WILLIAMS Special to ProRodeo Sports News T he summer run has been kind to steer wrestler Tucker Allen. The Ventura, Calif., cowboy just missed out on his first trip to the Wrangler National Finals rodeo a year ago. He has himself in prime position to flip the script in 2024. A 3.6-second run in Castle Rock, Colo., at the Douglas County Fair and Rodeo has furthered his case. Allen’s time was enough to hold off Cody Devers’ 3.7-second effort to pick up the win at the PRCA Playoff Series stop. “I know what start I am going to take going into each rodeo, but other than that, I never try to overcomplicate it,” said Allen, 25. “We have run so many steers practicing that I just try to let my body react when I get out of the box.” As far as the thought process going into the rodeo after drawing his steer, Allen got to work immediately gathering any information he could within the steer wrestling network. “My buddy Shane Frey actually pulled him in the slack that morning and I remember watching him and he made a good run,” Allen said. “The good thing about bulldoggers is we always try to help each other, I called him (Shane Frey), and he told me the rundown on the steer…it definitely helped a bunch. “The steer was really average, you had to see all of the start, there were a lot of broken barriers at that rodeo, so I just made sure to see a full stem on him. “I knew the steer would be good on the ground, I just had to get out there and not break the barrier first,” Allen said. The horse that made this all possible was Justin Schaffer’s horse Banker. He believes having the right mount in steer wrestling can make all the difference in the world. It’s been case and point with him and Banker during this key stretch of rodeo. “We have been riding him all summer and it’s been working out well,” Allen said. “I really hit ‘em at Reno and had some luck on him there. We have been riding him a lot and it’s been going pretty good. We actually hazed on him all last year and Justin jumped the first ones on him. You know he’s still a little green, but he is so talented and makes the job easy.” Allen’s success in Castle Rock has him sitting ninth in the PRCA | RAM World Standings as of Aug. 8. He plans on buckling in and hopefully locking in his trip to the NFR this year. “My plan to secure my spot in the Finals this year is to just keep winning and try to max out every steer that I draw,” Allen said. “I’m just going to keep working hard. I love bulldogging, the adrenaline rush of it, and I want to do as good as I can.”
